Well played on TR2. I remember playing the first couple of stages of the third game, back in the day, but didn’t care for it. Hopefully I enjoy it this time.
I do remember liking the fourth one, though. I could be remembering it all kinds of wrong, but it felt like fan service for TR1 fans.

TR4 was my fave back in the day. The Egyptian setting is perfect for Tomb Raider and I felt it was more focused than the previous couple of games. Shame it wasn't included with the other remasters.

I think my lack of time with Tomb Raider 2 is my partner’s subtle way of saying she is not enjoying our shared playthrough, so I’m restarting it alone. Had another look at the achievements and laughed. I’ll be ignoring those and just enjoying the game for what it is.

Just picked this up in the Steam sale - decided I fancied it for nostalgic reasons. TR2 was my fave back in the day.
Struggling a bit with the control scheme. The modern controls feel natural now, as we’re all accustomed to twin-stick controlling. I am finding it really hard to move around with the tank controls. But it doesn’t play like TR with the modern controls. You don’t backstep, backflip or side flip unless you have your guns out - and there doesn’t seem to be an option to have this as a toggle (like the original TR) rather than a button you have to hold down. How have people managed with this?

To be fair, I’ve had to put it down for a bit because I was starting to feel fatigued. It definitely didn’t help restarting the game, but I forgot how many levels there were. I’d argue it’s about 5 or 6 too many.

One of my favourite gaming memories is of a shared playthrough of TR2 with my flatmate back when it was first released. One of us controlling Lara, one spotting. Probably why I remember the game so fondly, compared to the other two.

So much nostalgia for TR2. Tomb Raider's greatness starts and ends with the first game for me. I never cared for all the non-tomb levels and nonsense bells & whistles introduced in TR2 and beyond, or the gun battles with automatic rifle-wielding goons introduced in the later games.
None of it captured the lonely desolation of the first game, and seemed to move the series towards a generic action adventure game, rather than a platform puzzler. I enjoyed playing through Anniversary, but somehow even that game didn't quite capture the tone of the original.

Tomb Raider for me is at its best when you're figuring out where to go/solving a puzzle. The worst is when an enemy appears..

Haven't minded the enemies in the second game- the ones at the end of the first are much worse and made that less fun for me. Haven't even done the add on yet as it was more of that. Went straight on to 2 instead. The ones in 2 can be dealt with quite easily, especially the melee ones. The others is usually a case of out ranging them. I find looking for a decent spot to kill them part of the puzzle aspect to the game. Got loads of ammo and health anyway
I like the locations in the second game as well. The Venice levels are especially good. Something about the atmosphere in them really reminds me of the Thief games. They don't make any sense in terms of layout, with random switches opening random doors, leading to more switches and doors. But it's fun working through it

The locations are very nice, but some of those stages are just way too long. I don’t mind spending an hour or two on a stage if I’m figuring out a puzzle, but if all I’m doing is hunting keys for locks, it starts to feel like a busy work. And that’s before you get to the combat, which is either a grind against your time or your health. At first I was precious about my health and took my time, but eventually I just wanted it over quickly so would go in guns blazing. There’s plenty of health and ammo to accommodate this strategy at least.
I will go back to finish TR2, but I realised I’ve blurred my fondness of the two games together over the years. The first game does dip in quality at the end, whilst the 2nd game starts off strongly, but otherwise the quality between the two is quite substantial.

Playing TR2 on and off. Amazed at myself for completely blanking out what happens between Venice and Nepal. For good reason I guess, the oil rig and even the shipwreck were not good levels. Combat is manageable but I do not like how they'll do bullshit like spawn 3 gun enemies behind you when you just came out of that hallway. You see it most in Venice, you can see in a room through a window completely empty and then you enter it and an enemy spawns in the corner blasting.

Useful bump, I finished TR3 yesterday. It has a major problem which is that most of the levels are either fine to navigate but don't have enough interesting platforming or puzzling and instead feel like bug corridor fests, or they have lots of that good stuff but are a fucking disaster to navigate.
The add on is like it dares to ask "what if tomb raider 3 had good levels"

The gun toting enemies put me off 2 and the more modern locations (I seem to recall that the Great Wall of China first level was decent though). Only briefly touched upon 3 but it felt like more of the worst of 2. I seem to recall IV being a return to form tombwise, but forget what it was like for enemies. A bit of a moot point as it isn't included here. Still tenpted by the physical come September, and possibly the Deluxe Edition. I am guessing it will be running whatever patch we are on now with lead times.

TR2 is the nostalgia hit for me and one of my fondest gaming memories as a kid. However, I think looking back on it now, when I was younger I don't think I ever got past the wreck level, especially taking into account how little I know of the subsequent stages. I must have played the first four levels to death and then level skipped to fuck about with the snow mobile and get to the last level to see her in the shower.
Now older I'm working my way through it to finally beat the game, I can say with certaintiy and free from nostalgia that the first is better in ever way.
Too many enemies, convoluted level design and way way way too much time in the "underwater" sections.
The first four levels are still nostalgia gold though and a cherished memory.

While I agree that there's too many "underwater" levels in the underwater section, I think the level design is pretty great in TR2. I found the levels pretty intuitive to navigate through and with a decent amount of personality. I really liked it - but yes, too many enemies.
Half of TR3's levels take the fucking piss with convoluted shit. They'll present you with 3 ways you can go right from the start with absolutely no indication of which one is the correct one, and you'll be able to spend 20 minutes following the wrong path until you need an item to progress or to have pressed a random button on the other side of the level. Then they'll hide that item in an easily missable spot on one of the other routes to boot.
And that's if you're lucky enough to be in the situation where they made it obvious the door was a door and the point you could use the item was a point you could use the item.
IDK how anyone beat that fucking game without a guide, honestly. TR2 I had basically no memory of past the first level or two and breezed through for the most part. Even temple of Xian.

Playing Tomb Raider 3, those London levels were a bit shite huh? Massive sprawling levels that winds up in dead ends unless you have the key item to progress. Good luck finding them. But hey, at least I got some cool weapons out of it. Harpoon gun, MP5, grenade launcher, rocket launcher. So then I decided to do Nevada... only to realise all those weapons are taken away from you. Permanently. It's why it's collectively understood to do Nevada straight after India, so you won't have this problem. Good stuff, that's wonderful. I forget how brutal some of these PS1 games were. Definitely does feel like it's obtuse enough in order to sell official strategy guides

Which is what worries me about Soul Reaver being remastered rather than remade because yes it's got some interesting level design and a great story but the gameplay is very archaic and I'm really wondering if people have forgotten how many push the block puzzles were in that game.
