For a real blast from the past, there's always Duke Nukem: Time to Kill, AKA That Time Duke Went All Tomb Raider

zisssou Oh yes, good call. PS1 third person 3D games are generally maligned - they definitely haven't aged well and play like ass now - but there are many I remember fondly including Syphon Filter, Urban Chaos, Shadow Man, Soul Reaver and most of all Tenchu (remakes of the last two would be very welcome).

Soul Reaver was the best of the bunch IMO, played really well, told an interesting story and looked great for its time.

I've tried to get Legacy of Kain on Steam but the first (and best) one doesn't seem to be available. Fun and somewhat odd fact I discovered when I was idly reading up on the game earlier today: Ariel (who we can see in the first trailer) is voiced by Anna "Skyler White" Gunn.

Wasn't that more of a fighting game? Had some fighting in it. I've been reading about it, and at the time it was seen as a step up from the formulaic Tomb Raider games that people were getting tired of. "The fact that Urban Chaos is an enjoyable third-person action game with no switch flipping, box pushing, or key finding should be reason enough for you to purchase it. That it's also great looking, inventive, funny, and even a little tactical makes it a must for anyone who can appreciate stylish but relatively mindless console-style action."

Looking at videos now Fade To Black looks like it would be a real slog but MDK still seems banging. Would be extremely interested in updated versions of either. Same for Duke Time To Kill. I’d include Nightmare Creatures too but Bloodborne already exists.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, the first one, is available on GOG. It's also currently 77% cheaper.

MDK is still banging, although it's pretty easy to notice that the whole game is like 2 hours long. At most.
I have a soft spot for Shadow Man too, but the PS1 version wasn't exactly great, from what I've heard. PC is where it's at.
Soul Reaver, on the other hand, played best on PS1. Sure it's like 20 fps most of the time, but the PC version absolutely ruined the music. I guess crappy PC ports were around back then too. Maybe that's why they removed it from digital stores? Better get the PS1 version and play it on emulation.

I just went through a rabbit hole of similar games from that era and found Urban Chaos. Now there's a game I'd like to try again. Colin McFarlane played Roper. When I interviewed him for Dark Knight, I mentioned it. He was somewhat stunned.

I am enjoying this nostalgia hit a lot.
A few criticisms though. It's too dark in too many places (I switch to OG visuals frequently because it's like holding a torch). It's too easy on ps5 during a frantic gun fight to accidentally go into photo mode. They could have put in an enemy targeting system surely, the combat is terribly messy.
It's amazing how little I recall about the levels (cleared Peru on the first so far). There were some really obtuse design decisions made back in the day.

I remember TR3 scaring the shit out of me, especially some of the enemies in India.
Edit: I note Lara has her black/navy passport. Bet she voted for Brexit.

Isn't it burgundy in 2 though? Maybe she had an old pre-burgundy one from before the 90s and then had to renew it by the time 2 came around.

How do I climb up without doing a handstand all the time? 🥺

You hold the walk button to do a handstand when you climb up, so stop holding that button 😆
You only need to hold walk when you walk to the edge of platforms, so you don't fall off and can get to the very edge.

30 mins in and the controls seem very natural, just how I remember. Like damagedinc said, it all started flooding back. It does take some readjustment initially though. I am super impressed, it looks lovely. I have just gotten to the Lost Valley and the visual improvements are staggering, yet somehow it remains very faithful. Playing on my Steam Deck hooked up to TV. Flawless 4k 60fps presentation. Looks great handheld too. Loving it. Welcome back Lara.

Tying in with both the Tomb Raider focus of this thread, and the Stellar Blade discussion that ensued within, here's a possible first look at Lara Croft's new design for the next TR game: www.pushsquare.com/news/2024/02/looks-like-this-is-the-new-lara-croft-in-ps5s-next-tomb-raiderOf course, developers can't post images of female characters without Team Incel coming out to play at once, so the first comment under the article is some dipshit saying, "I'm sorry, but that looks like a dude wearing makeup." Fuck's sake!

Some guys online really really want to let you know that they can't masturbate to a fictional character
On 2nd level in Peru and yeah this is great. Its been so long that I don't remember every room or where a path leads and then some familiarity comes rushing back, especially switching between original and new. Might be misremembering but were you always able to roll in mid air and keep shooting? I thought that was a sequel thing, did they add it here? Camera messes me up sometimes too. But so far so good

Tuffty - I think so, I remember err bouncing around in some combat sections. You’re more vulnerable on the ground. I had one of those jump to a sliding block then jump roll to a platform behind me things earlier. Wasn’t too bad, but they pile on the pressure later on…

Never heard of Stellar Blade, but a quick google shows that the character looks exactly like every other anime inspired character ever, so I'm not sure what the fuss is about.
New Lara looks a bit like Gina Carano so you'd think the incels would like her.

The trouble is that Lara isn't known to be a racist as far as I can tell so they're not on her side

Watched the gameplay trailer. In the trailer the re-vamped graphics look much brighter and weirdly more cartoon-like, whereas the originals looked pretty 'realistic' at the time. Which is odd given that several people here have said the new graphics make it too dark.

Which is odd given that several people here have said the new graphics make it too dark. There are some sections in the early levels of Peru that you can argue as being too dark for sure, but no big deal, in a way I like it. And to answer your question about Stellar Blade, the incel argument is that this level of fanservice and female body types and attractiveness should be the case for all female characters, pointing to the likes of Abby from TLOU2 or the female character in the Fable trailer as examples of what they don't want
