The Stellar Blade stuff has been massively embarrassing for all involved.
Agreed (and the devs haven't exactly helped, by talking in an interview about wanting "to come up with the most attractive looking body for the user", as if that matters in the least).
I'm still looking forward to the game, but this discourse is more than a trifle embarrassing.
At the very least I'm surprised that all of these weebs and incels are excited for a game that has the main character as a woman, albeit an imagined one, and not a loli character with a chest as flat as an ironing board.

I fully expect my resolve to break and I’ll buy this after a few reviews. The fact you can save anywhere and skip levels if a challenge gets too much is probably all I need. There’s walkthrough videos now that we didn’t have in 1996; so would be rude not to. /Lara plummets to her death with a piercing scream for the fiftieth time. Forget videos, I'm sure there's some dog eared strategy guides from the 90s on Ebay.

I sometimes think this forum needs a disclaimer for every time a user visits it.

The statement from the devs saying they used an actual model for the scan of the character is hilarious because it doesnt look anything like the model. I'm interested in the game but any kind of discussion about that game online is about the character and how people are gonna buy 2 copies (they won't) because the devs are based. Only gonna get worse on release.

Tuffty They told Push Square that "the face was created originally in-house – it’s just the body of the [real-life] model that we scanned for the game", before banging on about "beautiful bodies" like a couple of horny teenagers. It sucks, 'cause hack and slash/character action games are practically an endangered species these days, as are high-profile releases that take 25 hours to beat instead of 50+; however, the incel crowd has already made Stellar Blade its latest cause célèbre, and I agree that it'll only get worse when the game comes out in April.

They're doing it because Stellar Blade has potential to be an actual good game as opposed to the type of games they play that have this embarrassing fan service. Wasn't too long ago that Sony was public enemy no 1 in their eyes because they were open about censoring some fanservice in Japanese games before they were released here. Truly pathetic.

It's odd cause it's the same sort of stuff Kojima got crap for over Quiet or PGs got for Bayonetta but for some reason the press/gamers are really praising it here.
But then it's likely the same lot that got real creepy over the tall vampire from RE8.

Bayonetta was before my [gaming] time, and I didn't play The Phantom Pain until a few months after it launched, so I can't compare Stellar Blade's reception to either of the above. I absolutely loved MGS5, and it's one of my all-time favourites, but I did (and do) find Kojima's depiction of Quiet to be pretty cringeworthy. His histrionic attempts to justify it only made matters worse, as well as not making any sense - there's literally an in-game outfit that puts her in a turtleneck and camo pants, which she's able to wear just fine while breathing through her skin.
It just makes her look like an actual badass soldier, rather than someone who escaped from the Playboy Mansion.

Certain gamers and developers can be fucking weird. The whole being upset about Mary-Jane not being a 10/10 stunner. Abby in TLOU2 not being your traditional type… but then I see those gamers praising Stellar and Nier Automata. They’re just filthy perverts. One of the only times it bothered me about a character was bug eyes in Fallen Order, because he looked ridiculous.

I guess it's the weird thing that a lot of Devs from China, Korea and Japan can only have women as porcelain objects or loli characters whereas all men have wrinkles and shit. It's why it's still odd that female characters in Tekken 8 still have that smooth clay face. As you say it's only going to get worse. Fucking pathetic.

I'm getting way off-topic here - what else is new? - but one of the final straws that made me unsubscribe from Angry Joe's YouTube channel was his handling of this topic.
Banging on about how characters like MJ are "wish fulfillment" for many players, so she needs to be as (conventionally) attractive as possible? Fine, I guess. Whatever. I mean, it sounds lame as hell, and does nothing to improve the stereotypical image of gamers as basement-dwelling incels, but you do you.
Juxtaposing MJ's in-game character model with photos of female developers, and implying to your three million subscribers that these devs somehow lobbied for MJ to be made less pretty in Spider-Man 2 than she was in the original game, as part of some weird self-insertion ploy? Yeah... fuck you, guy.
Imagine being one of those women on the dev team, and seeing a photo of you being used in that way - "MJ's an uggo now 'cause these chicks are also ugly, so they made her look as bad as they do!" What's that gonna do for your self-esteem? Ugh.
Rant over.

I guess it is wish fulfilment to want to fuck a digital recreation of woman so opposed to a woman in the real world because you know, they'll say no.

I knew I was too weak to resist purchasing this trilogy. Thankfully I got the steam version at the 20% off preorder price; it's been a while since I played those games, haven't been so excited for valentine's day in a long time...

I bought them because I've never actually played them and want to see what Tomb Raider is like when you're, erm, actually raiding tombs and not shooting five thousand soldiers in the face as everything blows up around you.
At least, that's what I'm lead to believe they are like.
I remember I had the demo on a cover disc back when the first game game out and played it for about twenty minutes before deciding that it was shit. So eh, I'm not sure what much older me will make of it all.
I'm aware I might still think it's shit.

I’m very intrigued to see how they play today. No memory of any of them except being really stuck looking for cogs, THAT bit, and aimlessly riding about on a speedboat.

I played the second game on my iPad, of all things, before I got into gaming properly.
Despite the fact that finicky tank controls on a touchscreen device were a match made in hell, I actually enjoyed it.
I'm not sure I'd get on with it today, mind - half the challenge seemed to be in controlling Lara during combat and traversal sections, which would be pretty much moot if she moved as fluidly as she did in the reboot trilogy.

Using the modern controls I haven't yet worked out how to jump sideways or perform an action like vaulting into the crates in Lara's home. The game only tells you about original controls.
Anyone figured the trick to these things?

The grab is on R2 not the action button. The modern controls have separated grab and action and called grab 'secondary' in the config menu.
To sideways jump you have to have a weapon drawn.

Recently played the original 1 and 2, so not sure if I will bother with this, but it is good to see them getting some acknowledgement. Hopefully, if they go down well, new Tomb Raiders will return to this style a little more rather than the survival stuff and heavier action of the newer games.
Playing the old games today, it really struck me that these games felt very much like a translation of the cinematic platformer into 3D. They were games with very precise movement and animations that you had to commit to. More fluid movement of the modern games of its ilk might be more natural and I can understand why many find it hard to go back to these tank controls, but the challenge and puzzle element of just navigating an environment is definitely diminished.
Shame they didn't do 4 and 5 as well. 4 was always my favourite as a kid.

IIRC they were very similar to the original Prince of Persia, but in 3d.
In PoP you had to measure everything in floor slabs, and the long jump took an extra floor slab to launch, and I vaguely remember TR1 everything being measured in blocks, and the long jump taking an extra block to launch.

Got it on Steam with the discount - a Valentine's Day present for my wife (who says romance is dead). She adores I-IV from back in the day (Angel of Darkness broke her though, haven't seen her so disappointed since our wedding night). We opted for Steam so she can play docked or in bed as most of her gaming is on handhelds.
Anyway, gave it a quick go. I think when I play it I may stick to tank controls to be honest just because of its grid-based nature.
I've also got to say it's nice of them to include an instant low-res-ifying torch mapped to one of the controller buttons because Christ knows how I'd see a single thing without it.

First thing I’ve done is lock Winston in the freezer. They couldn’t be arsed to fix this sort of stuff though ha.

Yep, exactly what I was referring to. Games like PoP, Flashback and Another World were definitely the inspiration for the original Tomb Raider games.

The new controls play a lot like Anniversary/Legend/Underworld, which I really liked.

I’m persevering with the tank controls but there’s a lot of relearning to do. It’s a cracking game but it doesn’t fuck about and lining up jumps with walk/sidestep and battling the camera might get tedious. Hope it’ll click again.
They could do with a quick save but for the price and amount of game here, this is excellent.

How do you save, actually? I literally just played 5 minutes or so to see how it felt and didn't even think about that.
It used to be save crystals iirc, is it the same this time around?

There’s no save crystals this time and no checkpoints, so you have to open the inventory, press down for ‘game’ and the load/save options are there

Think it might just have been the console version that used the save crystals. The PC versions I've owned (both original disc versions and the Steam ones) allowed you to save everywhere through the menu and didn't have any save points in the levels.
