For those of us (maybe mainly PC peeps?) who are still playing games from the past, what's your fave game you played this year? PS/ FG User's GOTY 2023 is over here if you are up to date and want to vote for Kena: fontgeek.io/thread/1266/fg-users-goty-2023---- For me: Life is Strange - which is awesome, to the point where I'm doing the thing of putting off the last 2 episodes because I don't want to rush it. It has such a great vibe and characters. Maybe the only game where I've let cutscenes run on longer than needed just to chill out and listen to the music. Honorable mentions for: Alice - Madness Returns - this is great and had a good shot at first place, but it's just dragged out waaaay too long. A bit of editing and it'd have been a classic. All the remakes/remasters, esp Doom 2, Quake, Burnout Paradise and System Shock (which would also have been in with a shot if I'd played more than the demo) (edit: though I guess most of those count as 2023 if that's when the remake came out... SS would. ) Guitar Hero - because I'm a guitar god!! And it's finally pushed me to get a real guitar and try to play the thing.

It was the year of the ARPG for me - started off with Grim Dawn, through Last Epoch, and finishing up with Diablo 4. I like playing them as roguelikes, with permadeath on, for some reason.
Grim Dawn was great, and opened my eyes to the genre. I spent the least time with it though, and need to go back.
I had a great time with Diablo 4.
...but when I did get to Level 50 and all the new currencies and crap unlocked, I felt kinda hollow and that I'd had enough. I'll go back to try out a few more classes after a (long) break, starting again at Level 1.
But my GOTY was Last Epoch, what a game.
Honourable mention to Snowrunner - I bought the whole shooting match again on Steam a few months ago, making it three platforms I own it on. Currently making my way through Hard Mode again. Snowrunner is a top 10 game for me

Cyberpunk 2077
I think I've only played one game that came out this year and that was Resi 4 remake

Generation Zero
I didn't finish it (I rarely finish games, even the ones I like), but I really enjoyed the setting and atmosphere when I tried it out earlier this year. It's definitely on my "I'll get back around to it eventually" list.

Gen Zero always looked kinda interesting, mainly due to the setting. I remember the initial reviews were that it was a bit lacking, but I think they added stuff since then. I was never sure if the lacking bits would even bother me.

Roki might be up there for me. But honestly I'm shit remembering specifically what I've played when
I will say Alice Madness Returns is indeed very good though

For me it was either Monster Boy and the cursed kingdom or Firewatch. Mostly because they were unexpectedly good. I also finished Pillars 2, which was of course great, but also expected to be so. Same for Opus Magnum.

But honestly I'm shit remembering specifically what I've played when I will say Alice Madness Returns is indeed very good though I have Roki somewhere, so I should give that a go. Alice is weird (and not only intentionally ;-) ). If you'd asked me 5 hours in I'd have said it was amazing. And I still think almost every part of it is good. But there's something about the way it's put together that makes it harder work than it should be. I think each section is just too long. I'm on the final stretch now, but I'm finding I can only play it in short bursts as it's kinda exhausting. I feel like if you had all the same elements, and just mixed them together slightly differently, it's be perfect. Plus cut out a bit of the length. I love the imagination that's gone into it though.

If they had reduced the length of each level by 50% it would have been a great game. But it was just too much, I stalled out after six or seven hours. And I was enjoying the game but the levels never ended. I guess it was from a time where you had to get your value for money in time played.

Children Of Morta (PS5). A beautiful emergent storyline, wrapped around a tight roguelike shooter with brilliant character mechanics, unique skill sets, and genuinely interesting upgrade trees.
And even if you haven't got PS+ it's always on sale for like £3.50. Highly recommended.

DadFE and I are still in the "Oh we should totally play Baldur's Gate co-op!" phase and I haven't played any other 2023 releases all that much to my recollection besides Wo Long (mostly been working on my backlog), so Tears of the Kingdom wins it pretty much by default. Not that I'd expect too many of this year's releases to top it even if I had played them, though. Edit: I just realized I completely misread the title! Go me! *facepalm* The main answer doesn't actually change though

I got the platinum for Death Stranding earlier in the year. I'd completed it when it first came out, and when I got covid last year I decided to give it a good go just making deliveries over and over again. Finally managed to get the plat in April.
But as for completing from the start, I'd say Cyberpunk as well. I absolutely loved every minute. I fully intend on getting the DLC at some point.

Oh yeah, Death Stranding is a good shout. Kind of shits itself towards the end, but it was a great winter game last year (think I finished it in early Jan so it counts)
RE4R is probably mine, and will inevitably be again next year when I give it another few playthroughs. Just an excellent reworking of an excellent game. The DLC was great too.
Vampire Survivors deserves an honourable mention. I keep coming back to it on Steam, Xbox and Android when they add new content and achievements (sadly they seem to have stopped adding the latter now though)
Oh, and RDR2 is shaping up to be a contender. Bounced off it hard at launch, but it's clicked with me this time around.

Sekiro is my favourite game ever, and I did my third playthrough this year.
Bloodborne is a close second on both fronts (and again, I played it through for the third time in 2023).
In terms of games I experienced for the first time this year, Nier: Automata, without a doubt.

There were many but heck if I can remember them all. Most hours played this year was probably GTA V (PC). Finally completed it.

Cyber Shadow. Was released in 2020 and I didn't even know it existed until a recent Steam sale. It's one of my all-time favourite games now.

Interesting, I don't recall having this problem at all but I did play it closer to release. I'll probably replay it at some point, will have to see then as long as it doesn't sully my memory. Recently Lost in Random reminded me a little of Alice. More kid friendly though

And it has a whole bunch of new worlds etc.. to keep things fresh. There's just something about the pacing that's off, and I can't entirely put my finger on what it is.
Still really like it though.

Cyberpunk.
I completely lost myself in this game and was sad for it to finish. Will wait before playing it again with expansion So it's fresher in my mind. Also might wait for new pc to play it

Doesn't every copy of Life is Strange come with an extra large rainbow butt plug? They know their audience.
I've had my PS3 hooked up far more than anything else this year. Playing stuff like the critically drubbed Ar Tonelico Quoga, Demon's Souls, Fallout 3 and dabbling with the various arcade racers like Split Second, Motor Storm Pacific Rim and Fuel which I like a lot more than the review scores would have suggested.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is probably the biggest and best I’ve played to completion this year.
I finished the game too.

FlatOut 2 and Gris for me.
FlatOut 2 is such a fun arcade racer with some decent physics and crash deformation. Gris was totally lovely though, such a beautiful game. One that I felt emotionally affecting, which is pretty unusual in gaming for me. Great soundtrack too.

yeah, Cyberpunk 2077 for me.
Did enjoy Red Dead Redemption 2 earlier in the year a lot though.
