Afternoon ratfans I know we did this on EG probably about 15+ years ago, but I am always interested/nosey to see what people listen or listened to, so lets go round again. My first record was: 12" single (this was the age of the 12") of: Modern Love by David Bowie and it was 1983, I bought it from the co-op superstore in Fratton, Portsmouth. I was 11 years old and I would like to add, had feckin great taste Oh Yeah! First Album I want to say something by Simple Minds but I'm not 100% might have been Adam and the Ants or even Bat out of Hell. Your turn.

Honorable mention to Mr Blobby as the first single I was given... And that chorus is now stuck in all your heads. 😁

First album was Nirvana - Nevermind. On cassette tape.
No idea what my first single was, I remember thinking they were a bit pointless because you wanted something you could listen to for a while before having to start it again.

Single was Eye of the Tiger by Survivor. Album was either Bruce willis' 'Return of Bruno' or Iron Maiden's 'Powerslave' depending on which way the lady in John Menzies rang them through, since I bought them both at the same time. (both on cassette for walkman listening) Guess which album I still listen to occasionally. Hint- It's not bruce willis. Got sucked right in by the catchy 'under the boardwalk' there. A lesson learnt!

Nirvana? Blur? as first album/singles?
Man some of these records tag some folk as young(er).
Others choices, um, less so.

My very first single was The Final Countdown by Europe. Still an absolutely brilliant tune in my book. I remember really liking the B-side, a song called ‘On Broken Wings’ almost as much.
I was also massively into synth pop back then (still am tbh), listening to lots of Depeche Mode, Erasure… a lot of my music experience was actually listening to stuff my parents bought, but I think the first album that I actually got “for me” was Pet Shop Boys - Actually.
I still rate that album really highly.

Can't go wrong with Depeche Mode, I still love them. Can't really go wrong with 80's hair metal cheese from Europe either tbh!

I was obsessed with the albums experience and jilted generation beforehand so I I remember it being a big deal when fat of the land was going to be released .

Technically I think the first single I “bought” was when my mum let me hand the money over the counter at Woolworths for a 7” of Whitney’s I Will Always Love You because I wanted to buy her a present

First album was Michael Jackson - Bad on cassette. First single I don't know, was much later because I only ever bought albums. Possibly NIN - The Perfect Drug.

First Single I bought all by myself like a big boy was... ahem... Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) I think the first album I bought was Appetite For Destruction. I had others purchased on my behalf before that, but I think that was the first one I got for myself.

I don't believe Duff. I'm sure his first record was Au Clair De La Lune.

That I bought for myself:
First Single: Prodigy - Breathe First Album: I can't be 100 percent sure. There is a very good chance it was a Prodigy album.
I can remember the first albums I had, but they were presents so not technically ones I bought myself. Those would be Metallica - Load and The Trainspotting Soundtrack.
(although I did also have Wrestlemania - The Album a good number of years earlier).

I didn’t pick up singles until the sort of height of the Britpop era when I used to buy all the Manics, Oasis and (yes I know) Seahorses stuff.
I’m the first album I bought with my own money was 2 Unlimited’s ‘No Limits’ On cassette. Yes the title track is a classic but I was all about Tribal Dance.
Before that I had Thriller, Bad and the Tv Gladiators OST tapes which I played the shite out of.
The first CD I ever got was a Now which notably had Rhythm of the Night and M Beat ‘Incredible’.
The first CDs I bought with my own money were ‘What’s the Story’ and a happy hardcore compilation on the same trip, from the much missed shop Vibes in Bury.
Thanks for this topic, genuinely, there are so very many memories attached to all this stuff, back when music meant a lot more to people than I think it now does. Did everybody back in the day used to religiously tape the Top 40 or just me?

No idea about single. Don't think I ever bought any until the 90s, so probably some euro disco thing.
First album was Appetite for Destruction by Guns N'Roses, with the original cover.
First concert I can remember at all was a now legendary Bruce Springsteen gig where the whole arena almost collapsed from the weight of the audience.
I was apparently quite cool when I was about 5-7 years old, but that phase passed quickly.
