Think chocolate salty balls as first single and the Slim Shady LP as album. Perfect wholesome music for a 10 year old.

Gigs!
My first gig was seeing Dodgy. I was 16 and went with a mate after the girl I invited turned me down. /over it now
They were playing a small venue in Worcester which meant you could get really close to the stage. At one point, a guy actually climbed up, shook Nigel’s hand and then jumped back into the pit. Totally chilled and friendly - I don’t think there was any security!
They had Scouse Britpoppers Cast as their support act, who I came away thinking were really good too. This was just before Cast’s first album and during Dodgy’s ‘Homegrown’ album era - 1994/5.
I still rate Dodgy as my favourite guitar band (not sure I’d call them Britpop - they were - are - better than that) and that very intimate concert is right up there with Oasis at Knebworth in ‘96 and the Prodigy in ‘97 (right after Fat of the Land released) as one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to.

Not seeing Prodigy (and David Bowie) when I had the opportunity is one of my all time regrets.

Have to admit, I’d have loved to have seen Bowie.
I do regret not seeing The Stone Roses when they were in their heyday. I went to see Ian Brown doing his solo show since, and while he was good and did perform lots of Roses songs, it wasn’t the same.
I had this conversation with my Dad once, and he simply told me that he did see the Beatles in the 60’s, so basically has no regrets. I figured that was fair enough.

Oh gigs?
Maybe The 4 of Us. Whatever year their first album came out. Which was 1989.

I went to an Oasis gig at Wembley stadium where people were throwing pints of piss in the air. Fun.
Best gigs I've been to are FKJ at the roundhouse. That man is very talented and Childish Gambino at the 02. That was a spectacle and a half. Watching Robert Glasper get drunk while playing the piano was good fun too.
Worst gigs were Public Enemy and Yasin Bey, not for the songs, but the acoustics were off so it wasn't enjoyable.

Ashamed to admit I don't really remember the first album I bought for myself... It comes down to either Foreigner's "4", Scorpions "Blackout" or Yazoo's "Upstairs at Eric's" (loved "Don't Go"), with Iron Maiden's "Piece of Mind" and Pink Floyd's "The Wall" coming around than a year later. No singles at that time though, vinyl was a costly habit and you had to make the best of your allowance. I, also, didn't trust cassettes BTW, I used to love record shops, looking around album covers, finding out previous records of known bands (no internet at the time), listening to the occasional promo tape; around high-school my mates and I used to purchase different albums, listen to them over the weekend, soak up the lyrics and songs and talk about them on Monday (or even tape them to pass around) - great times!!!

oooh Gigs! Should probably be another thread, but hey ho and there's not that many of us regular posters, so not like the thread will fill up. First gig was Kiss at Edinburgh playhouse on the crazy nights tour in 1989 I think. Ooof. Gig regrets-wise I have two. I didn't see Radiohead play the Bends in a tiny club because a mate though creep was shit. He also regretted that decision to stop us going not long after he heard the new lp for the first time. The second gig also involves Radiohead by some cosmic coincidence. They played here on the ok computer tour, but in the days before the internet, it had sold out before I'd even heard they were playing. I truly regret missing this because it had DJ Shadow and the Beastie's as support acts. I never saw the Beasties, whom I adore, and now I never will.

My first real gig was Saxon during their "Innocent is no excuse" tour in April 1986. They were the first metal band visiting Greece from abroad at an age I would be allowed to go to a gig by myself, but I had watched local bands live at small clubs and cinemas (!). That was also during the accident at Chernobyl and the gig was postponed for a day because of some fearful clouds above our heads My best gigs, though, must be Iron Maiden's "Seventh Son" tour in 1988 (at their peak) and Pink Floyd's "Momentary Lapse Of Reason" tour in 1989 (albeit without Roger Waters).
Regretting not catching Dio -that small man with the huge voice- in concert, either solo or with Black Sabbath...

If you want to feel better about your gig regrets, my first gig was Nickelback
EDIT: ngl they were pretty good live and not a bad atmosphere for a kid's first rock concert

Edit- hahaha speaking of first gig regrets...
My first gig was Marilyn Manson and my second gig was also Marilyn Manson, a year or so later. This was mid 90s, well before he or any of his band members were cancelled for being dodgy fucks. Although notably, at the second gig one of my friends got invited backstage - she was 15, and a young-looking 15 at that.
I also saw Shed 7 around then at a free festival in Leeds, before they were big. And after that me and my mates went proper metal - Coal Chamber, Human Waste Project, Tura Satana was all one gig I think.
Best gig was probably U.N.K.L.E at The Rocket in Leeds - incredible visuals and atmosphere.

I think Prodigy came to the uni in my hometown and I didn't go. That was a big regret. Also, Muse were reasonably regular performers in the local live music dive, and yet I somehow managed to miss them every time. I did see them in the end when they were huge and headlining a festival though. The gig that made a huge impression on young me was Pink Floyd live at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, and I don't think I'd even heard of pink floyd before that. The main ones I wish I'd seen but I haven't were Rage and the Beasties. Other than that I managed to see most of the big/fave bands that I wanted to.
(i did see Audioslave though, so I guess that half counts for Rage)

My first gig was Dimmu Borgir when I was 15 (1997) in a small local venue. Opening act was an up and coming band called In Flames.

The first album I officially got (- my friend would often copy his older brother's stuff on to cassette for me, along with crudely drawn album front covers -) was ...And Justice For All by Metallica. I think I was in last year of junior school so probably about 10 or 11. I still love that album. To this day, though, I don't think I've ever bought a single.

My first gigs were all local ones featuring bands that I don't think made the big time. I think my first real gig was seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd at somewhere like Brixton

Album - The Housemartins, Hull 4 London 0 Single - No idea, maybe Peter Gabriel, Sledgehammer Gig - Billy Bragg, but that was a sit down affair. I think first proper one was Happy Mondays, Bradford. Can't remember much about it, apart from Shaun Ryder spent most of it sitting on the drum riser drinking Red Stripe. Gig regret - Jesus and Mary Chain on the Automatic tour, went the pub instead or something.. really dont know why.

As an aside, we stayed in a hotel last night and the ambient music in the foyer included Guns N'Roses and The Cure.

First single was 'Burning Heart' by Survivor (from Woolies), although I think I might have had 'Ant Rap' before that, but bought for me.
Can't remember the first album - possibly Hits 3, but the Ghostbusters Soundtrack was one of the earliest ones I recall purposefully getting. Likely preceding those, I recall going into town with my Grandparents and coming back with an album on cassette called 'Midnight Dynamos' by a band called Matchbox. I still have no idea why I chose that - I suspect it was in a bargain bin and I was allowed to pick one.
Gig regrets: missing out on Judas Priest on their Painkiller tour with Annihilator.

I would totally have put money on 'World in Motion' being mentioned as a first single purchase by now. Maybe my grasp of the forum's demographics isn't as strong as I'd thought!

I was a bit of a late starter to actually buying music. First record I actually bought myself was Public Enemy You Bum Rush The Show. I read about it and decided that's what I wanted to get into. Found a copy in a record store about 2 hrs away. Jumped on a bus. It changed my music tastes forever.

Can't remember the first album, but the first single I bought was 'Keeping the Dream Alive" by Freiheit. As if that wasn't shame enough I do also know that the first CD I ever purchased was 'Almost Unreal' by Roxette.

Single: Ghostbusters - Ray Parkour Jr which I bought with a record token I won in a dancing competition. I did the robot. I also got a kiss off Miss Yorkshire (even though it was in Lincoln). Album: The Only Way is Up - Yazz. Not proud of that one. My tastes did improve.....
