First single was definitely the theme from Monkey on a BBC records release in 1980. I was given a copy of The Visitors by ABBA a year layer, but I think the first album on cassette I brought was either Brothers in Arms by Dire Straights or The Hits Album.

Thanks for this topic, genuinely, there are so very many memories attached to all this stuff, back when music meant a lot more to people than I think it now does. Did everybody back in the day used to religiously tape the Top 40 or just me? We all did it mate, I have many recorded top 40's with a various hit having my mum* yelling "your dinner's ready!" alongside FGTH singing "when you want to come" lol *or a DJ cutting into the song to quickly or even worse cutting an epic outro. We were all there with our fingers on the pause button. Great times.

(Shrugs) I didn’t tape the top 40 - I didn’t listen to anything on the radio until my early 20s. In my teens I thought I was edgy and alternative and that all popular music was lame- not realising that the stuff I listened to (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, RHCP, Smashing Pumpkins etc) was also quite popular and frequently made the top 40.
If we’re aging ourselves, the first albums I listened to were Queen - A Night At The Opera and Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here on vinyl. But those were hand-me-downs from my mum, not bought.

I used to tape songs off the top 40 all the time.. sitting there with my finger hovering over the record button for when they played a song I liked. I'm not sure I've ever bought a single. I never really saw the point. First single I was given for xmas must have been a vinyl of Stand and Deliver by Adam & the Ants when I was about 5. First Album I bought. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it was a cassette of Actually by the Pet Shop Boys. First Cd was Joyride by Roxette in 1991.. the year cds eclipsed cassettes. All very 80s! [edit] tbh, I'd entirely forgotten that I was really into the pet shop boys back then, and entirely forgotten that the pet shop boys were a thing. (i was also a big Status Quo fan at an early age, but I think those were borrowed from my dad. And he took me to a gig when they came to my hometown, which was probably my first music gig so it made a big impression on little me.)

First album I owned “properly” (i.e. not copied) – Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms.
First album(s) I actually bought for myself – the first five Iron Maiden albums.
I never bought singles.
First album I ever really had (my mate copied it for me) – Madness: Complete Madness.

First single: Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jr. (7") (Bought with saved pocket money from the Woolies on the High Street.
First album: Bad - Michael Jackson. (Cassette) (Probably from the same shop)
Once I got into my teens I used to buy loads of those 'limited edition' Digipak CD singles for metal, industrial and techno bands. Still got most of them in boxes in the garage somewhere, I should probably go through them all some time.

The first single I owned was ‘The magic number’ by De La Soul when they stuck records to boxes of Frosties for some reason.
The first single I ever bought with my own money was ‘you could be mine’ by GnFnR.
The first album was one of the NOW compilations. Had a lot of bangers on it.

Those early NOW compilations were great as a kid. I used to get one almost every year and then I didn't need to buy any singles etc..

Oh yes fond memories of simpler times recording the top 40 whilst doing last minute Sunday night homework, then moved on to making tapes from the Evening Session with Steve lurpack and Jo while.
Fuck I wish I had some of those tapes now.

I can't remember if the Bucks Fizz single I owned when very young was bought for me or if I chose it...
I definitely remember having to own Billie Jean and playing it to death on my Mum's old portable record player.
We swapped tapes at school. I didn't buy albums until much later, until the hair metal years. Maiden, Bon Jovi, etc.

By the Way: RHCP
I wasn't into music at all until I was a teenager, and a friend let me listen to this album. Loved it and had to get it, and the whole RHCP back catalogue. Still disappointed the bands albums got so shit in later years.

Ask for a record from there, "accidentally" tape it (sorry PMRC goons). Listen to it ad nauseum on your paper round. Got into early Killing Joke, the Cult, Sisters of Mercy, The Mission and a wee bit of Bauhaus that way. I guess the library powered a minor goth phase until I could afford more vinyl. Or maybe that should be

I remember spending money on my first cassette before secondary school, so the very first album bought was The Simpsons Sing the Blues That's right, I was fucking cool. Second album ever bought was the Shakespears Sister album Hormonally Yours at the age of 11, and I remember proclaiming how good the guitars were!?! Ahahaha. Following that a period of the cod-reggae inspired stuff like Snow, UB40 etc then onto East 17. It got better though I promise with the rise of Brit-pop (Supergrass, Sleeper, Blur, Buletones, Cast etc), getting into local legends Reef, and then really finding my feet with Weezer, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, Silvechair etc etc. The 90s were a real musical experience for me (not just the 90s era itself) listening to all sorts of shit throughout my teen years. Guess not much has changed in that respect really.

Don't think I've bought a single in my life. Certainly not a physical disc. By the time I had disposable income I'd either buy an album or download a single.
First album was either Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park or, ahem, Chocolate Starfish by Limp Bizkit. I'm pretty sure it's the former and that's what I'd tell people in public

First album was The Police with Reggatta de Blanc, but I also got the Village People one at the same time as a present (that I had asked for) - both on cassette as I had got a tape deck for my birthday and yeah, taped the top 40 all the time.
First single I don't remember but could have been Human League Don't You Want Me as I recall buying that, but I reckon I would have got something else earlier.
Spent my teenage years buying loads of ex jukebox singles cheap on Oldham Market, and you had to stick in those little plastic thingies that cost 2p in them to make them usable (as large holes had been cut out of them so they could be used in a jukebox).

Nowt wrong with that...still know most of the words!
In a similar vein, I was bought Jive Bunny for Christmas one year and loved it. I was young and impressionable...
Now for gigs. My first proper gig was Madonna at Wembley in '87. Not as cool as my first purchases but still a great experience.

First single was either Boom Shake The Room by the Fresh Prince or Bad Boys by Inner Circle.
Earliest memory of buying an album was either Dangerous by MJ, OR Louise's Naked album, but apparently that was quite a bit later than Dangerous so maybe I just think about Louise naked a lot.
