Yeah I wouldn't want to go back to 2 devices either but I can't see dual screens being able to support much in the way of much of a bump in graphical improvement that we're hoping for. It's either just a patent for patenting's sake or some big shift in direction.

I’m a fan of the idea. If it were to become a retro-based machine, I’d be all over it as a second console, but not if it’s a second entirely new platform.

Changing topic a bit if the Switch 2 has to have a Nintendo gimmick I hope it's some clever new Joy-Cons that work well as a pad when in docked mode. And also make them reliable.

My kids were asking about old games consoles so I pulled the big box down from the loft and got the 3DS out with a pile of games, now they’re literally fighting over who gets to play on it. My youngest has been playing animal crossing wild world all bloody day, switch not getting a look in at all. I can’t imagine this would be the case if I hooked up the PS2.
Wild World was the game that brought me to EG forum so that’s been a trip down memory lane to see my 18 year old island again. I signed up and got to visit Otto’s island, I think it was called Ottowa. He game me some peaches, good times

Great work by DF
Surprisingly good results from that approximate GPU, if it's close to the end result in docked mode we'll be getting a PS4 like experience with some modern bells and whistles added on.
Rubbish for multi-platform games but good for Nintendo games.

Pretty fascinating stuff. It’s seemingly going to capable of some 30fps ports from current consoles, but we’re talking HD visuals. Not the 4K some will be hoping for.
Personally, it’s not an issue if that turns out to be true. I think most 900p - 1080p still looks nice on my 4K tv, but a sharper image would be nicer.

It's a shame if it is an 8nm chip as it would be cheaper and more efficient on 4nm TSMC, going by what informed speculators are saying on famiboards. Unless Samsung are desperate for business and practically giving the chips away.

Only thing that I thought was weird in the DF video was that the laptop had a I7 cpu. I don’t think 8 ARM cores will be able to offer the same performance in stuff like Cyberpunk, especially when you enable dlss or RT, those all need a bit of cpu power as well.

Again, the Apple ARM CPUs are eating Intel’s lunch so it’s not too far fetched to think they could be performant enough to kick an old Intel into touch. If the ML accelerator block appears on the thing that in itself lifts some of that CPU burden as well I’d imagine.
It’s 8nm that’s the sticking point. That has implications for power draw, therefore cooling, therefore peak clock speeds.

The Apple silicon is on 4nm iirc, so that’s probably part of why they are so performant. It’s just that in the video Rich was saying in Cyberpunk he didn’t see much of a drop when there were a lot of npc’s on screen, or when he started shooting, and I’m not sure some older ARM cores would be able to pull it off.

I wonder if the split screen ploy is so that they can suggest for families with multiple kids they can simply split the console and it will allow them to game individually and play 2 different games or the same co-op, their choice… less arguments!
Would also appeal to the “I’m stuck can you help me out?” situation.
I can imagine parents lapping that functionality up!
Especially if on rejoin into a single console the split is practically unnoticeable?

The thing about the split concept is surely it needs to have 2 of those chips? Unless one of the screens streams from the other somehow?

Well, they have that streaming tech from the WiiU, and the chip probably can handle two 720p screens. And you could wirelessly stream to the tv if they build a receiver into the dock.

Knowing Nintendo it'll be one screen for 'smile gaming' and another for 'intrepid gaming' or some shit

I’d be happy with that. Wonder what the launch titles will be. The Mario Kart team and the Odyssey teams have been pretty quiet for years.

Or AI Shark worked out a cracking way to get some publicity... I can't really imagine they are particular high on the list of companies that Nintendo feel the need to be kept in the loop with their secret plans.
Having said, I expect around that time is quite likely. September/October feels a good time to get both a launch hype rush of purchases, followed by Christmas to keep the numbers going.

I'm fairly happy no matter what Nintendo do. As a largely PC gamer the only Fomo I ever have is Nintendo games. Was true back in the GameCube days it remains true now.
I've never expected bleeding edge graphics, I own a PC for that.

Knowing how shitty Gameshark has been in the past, it wouldn’t surprise me if this was just an underhanded way of getting more attention for their rebrand, as it would barely be a footnote otherwise.
