If the follow up is backwards compatible and not ridiculously priced, I might get one just to play all the switch games I haven’t played yet. But I suspect it will be ridiculously priced. The current switch models seem very expensive for what they are, and those prices haven’t shifted. Would they drop the current prices between now and then and launch Switch 2 at the current price point? Because the trend has been for prices to go up.

The Switch2 is going to be mega powerful and yet still be a portable handheld too. In short, everything all the fan boys and girls desire. However, games will come on punchcards because, well, Nintendo be Nintendo.

Don’t tempt them into going digital only…

Yeah, the good thing about the Switch is that not only do they heavily support physical, but they actually play the game off the cart, without needing to install it onto system memory. It’s the only platform where physical actually matters.

It is quite nice being able to have dozens of games fit onto one sd card though.

There will be shenanigans. They love selling you games you’ve already bought on a previous system. So I can totally see them asking like €10 per game to up-res them to 1080p, otherwise they’ll run exactly like they did on the switch. At the very least they’ll tie it into the online service. Or they’ll sell new 1080p60 versions of the old games.

Metroid 4 has to be the release they have in mind for it. Being largely an FPS means higher performance could raise the bar nicely over current switch potential performance…

MP4 is really not going to be a system seller unless they can somehow do a botw style reinvention. The remastered switch version is the 73rd best selling game on switch, MP3 was the 43rd on Wii. They just don't perform well.

Very true, although a damn shame. Metroid Dread was absolutely amazing.

The first was sixth on the gamecube, but the gamecube didn't really do that well so it's not a very supportive stat.

You can see why they didn’t remaster the whole Metroid Prime trilogy now. No matter how many copies people will claim it could have sold, it wouldn’t have.

Maybe a Mario Kart, although not sure what more they could do with that. Hasn’t that applied for the last 20 years?

So current Switch? Unless the Direct includes another announcement...........................................................................................................................................................................................................

I doubt they would announce the new Switch now, not when they've got a pretty solid holiday lineup (with more to come if the rumours of what's likely to be shown at the next Direct are true).

More seriously, this could legitimately mean access to the entire DS/3DS library (3D compatibility pending) and maybe even Wii U, in one fell swoop. Someone at Nintendo must be drooling at the remake/remaster potential, even before anything new actually comes out... As for the actual new stuff, it's Nintendo. You can fault them for many things, but not for lack of creativity, they could figure out some crazy stuff with two detachable screens. And for me personally... Can you say Xenoblade X remake, with one screen taking the Gamepad's map functions?

Surely Nintendo would've patented it much earlier if it were a Switch 2 feature? Or am I naive?

Guessing they're just patenting an idea for now.

I wonder if this might be a return to a separate handheld device alongside a more domestic switch?

I hope not. They are finally in a place in which they can push out a higher volume of first party titles every year, without sacrificing quality, and they’re actually now doing that way better than the other two companies. It would be a shot in the foot if they have themselves two consoles to support separately again.
It’ll also be a hard sell for certain games. Can you imagine Pokémon going exclusively portable again? Or having a version that looks worse on a cheaper device?
I know they want to sell more hardware, but I feel going back to the old Console/Portable duo would be a big step backwards.
