I think foldable is out, but a detachable second screen with controls on it, yeah. I mean the whole concept of switch was you could hand someone a controller, for couch multiplayer. Handing them what is basically a second switch with screen and all could be cool, especially for kids. It basically just would have to be a screen with controls, a battery and the Wii U’s streaming tech.

Is it weird that foldable sounds more plausible than detachable to me? Mainly because they've already done it, with the DS/3DS line, while what's basically a detachable (simplified) second console would probably be a bit more demanding, logistics/hardware wise than the Joycons...
OTOH, having already done it might also mean they don't want to go back to that model, and detachable as I mentioned yesterday will open up more innovation opportunities, still open the door to DS/3DS library ports (minus any "fold the DS" gimmicks) and also offer Wii U port possibilities

Hmmm, I wouldn't expect anything too radical from the Switch tbh. This is a more conservative Nintendo than before with a more conservative management who are very nervous about the next console after what the Switch has achieved. I fully expect the next console to be extremely close to the Switch, no wild designs, very similar language to keep that base but not too similar so you have the confusion of the Wii U and people think it's an addition to OG Switch as opposed to a totally new console.

Announced or released by March 2025?!? If it is announced by then, when is it actually being released? The wait is strong with this one...

The fucker better be backwards compatible - it is so much my retro machine that I have a ton of modern stuff unplayed on it as I keep going back to old arcade games.

BC is the main thing all the leaks are consistent on. It'll be similar to how the 3DS was BC with different shaped carts for switch 2 games.

The quote referenced from Furukawa says it will have been over 9 years since the Switch was announced (17th March 2015). Assuming that means it won't become over 10 years since the announcement, we can expect official word anytime between now and 16th March 2025...
Really though, I expect March 2025 to be the release date, so we will likely get the announcement towards the end of this year, probably any time between September and November.

It makes sense from a business perspective for them to delay the release. But it's still a long time! The longest time between console releases for them, I think.

They said there will be a Direct in June but it's only for games to come out in 2024, not about the console

You guys waaay too optimistic. Announcement in early 2025, release in 2026. Or maybe Xmas 2025 if we're lucky.
No way in hell are they going to compromise the last big Xmas sales for the Switch this year by announcing the next console.

All of this screams of a company that is incredibly worried and nervous about having to move on from their most successful console.

I can't see why. They did such a good job with the Wii's successor.

Christmas 2025 seems like a safe bet for a new launch.

As a dedicated computer gamer for most of my life, the Wii U was the first console I bought... I regret nothing! For all the faults of the system itself, the games were fantastic. The fact much of the Switch's line-up for the first few years was basically re-releases of Wii U games is proof of that (and put me off getting the Switch for quite some time).

I liked the Wii U and even so it's probably the console with the fewest games in our household... With maybe the exception of the PSP/PS Vita. It had some gems though. Xenoblade X, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Super Mario 3D World, the Fire Emblem/SMT crossover, some others that I never got around to like DKC: Tropical Freeze...

When 2024 games like the Paper Mario remaster run at half the framerate of the GameCube original, the new Nintendo console can't come soon enough for me.

It makes sense from a business perspective for them to delay the release. But it's still a long time! The longest time between console releases for them, I think. It was around nine years between the original Game Boy and GB Colour - and even that was more like a pro version than a significant upgrade for that time. I still think March 2025 is the best shout.

Much hype. That first year software line up on Switch was immense. They definitely need to be able to pull that off again. New Mario, Mario Kart, Splatoon, etc…

Sounds like it will be more of an update to the Switch than something completely different which I understand but at the same time feel a little disappointed by, I was looking forward to seeing what ancient tech Nintendo could repurpose to give it a USP.

Just give me Wind Waker you cowards. You’re gonna have to settle for an HD remaster of both Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, developed by WayForward. That’s my 2025 prediction.

Does the DS count as ancient tech? Because I could see a new foldable system happening (with the Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks remakes, too!) while still keeping the docked/undocked bit to play on the big screen Alternatively, how about they actually do a good Virtual Boy?

Switch 2 needs to account for the needs of our highly considerate moped delivery drivers and make sure it has a safety first handlebar accessory for M0t0rb1k3s
