Plus they ain't doing something new and bonkers. They have something that works, they've successfully combined their handheld and console resources and market together. They're not going back to wild and crazy shit, it will have a gimmick, apparently a camera for AR shit, but that's it it's still going to be a Switch. That, and of course the cheap plastic “fishing rod” that will be bundled in for a shitty launch title of mini games..

I do recall the frothing fan boy reaction on the internet when Switch was announced and was absolutely hammered for being just another cheap tablet.

I'm sure E.cosse will be ecstatic wherever he is.

Really? I remember people being very excited for it (even though everyone had already known by that point that it would be some sort of hybrid device).

Yeah there was both sides really. But lots of doubters.

I distinctly remember a lot of think pieces musing that Nintendo may have shat the bed, I guess this was fueled by the absolute failure of the Wii U. Obviously when people actually saw the games and got it in their hands then yeah it was a completely different story. As always the lesson is never discount Nintendo, they've been in the game for so long for a reason.

For the longest time it was known as the NX and before the reveal it sounded like just another severely underpowered console for under the tv.

As always the lesson is never discount Nintendo, they've been in the game for so long for a reason. Hmm I must be misremembering then. The Switch reveal came less than four years after the Wii U had released, so most people were expecting Nintendo to come out with something good and interesting to try and make up for that failure (especially after earlier rumours that they would stop making consoles altogether). And that initial reveal video caused a lot of buzz and excitement iirc, especially since it showed off BotW quite a bit.

I was very much hyped for the Switch, but I do remember a mixed reaction. The negative stuff likely came from those who were always unlikely to invest in Nintendo consoles anyway, but there was definitely caution and a smidge of negativity about it. Especially in regards to power and what was a very slim software launch.
I think it took less than half a year to almost completely silence the doubters though. There were major titles seemingly every single month and at one point the vast majority of games on the system were running at 60fps. Indies were trying to get their games onto the eShop like it was some kind of exclusive premium club. And then games like Fortnite and Rocket League got announced… It was a complete flip compared to the Wii U.

So they... Switched up the reactions?

It’s easy to forget the mindset before it launched, like we didn’t even knew if it would have a capacitive touchscreen, because we looked at what they did with the Wii U and 3DS. And if I look at my launch Switch it’s still a sleek and thin design. Also, we knew the same chip was in the nvidia shield and the games on there weren’t the best. So the hardware was above expectations, and what they managed to get out of an old mobile chip was also unexpected.

Now you got me thinking the next console is gonna be called the Nintendo Flip. Foldable screen to simulate the DS and flips shut to fit into a new, smaller dock. It will also fold slightly so it can be worn like a VR headset, which will be the gimmick because as we all know, VR is a gimmick.

I'm guessing you're joking, but realistically unless they greatly reduce the console's size it'd be far too unwieldy to make it work, I doubt a Pokemon Go style game would work if it weren't a phone game... Even on the 3DS, Streetpass stuff just wanted you to have it in sleep mode in your bag

I remember the buzz pre-release was all pretty positive. The only real negative reaction I recall was to the price. Even with that lot though, I got the impression they would have moaned it was too expensive if it was £100. £280 was always fairly reasonable.
There might have been a bit of a grumble about launch line up as well, which is pretty par for the course for a new console.

I was mostly joking, though the image of hundreds of people roaming the streets holding their Swich2s out in front of them is something I really want to come to pass. But if it does have a camera for AR stuff, then having Pokemon in your room that you can press a button to throw a pokeball at seems like it'd be a big seller. Actually, a camera on the switch for AR stuff has the potential to be kinda awesome. Like those cool looking minecraft hololens trailers that Microsoft did, but without having to wear the dumb goggles. (As long as it doesn't get too heavy waving the switch around to see it.) Or a proper Star Wars style holochess game on your coffee table.
Or Mario MicroKart racing around your living room floor.

I for one am gutted that it's not coming until next year. Have got a real hankering for a new gaming SOMETHING that isn't currently being met and now unlikely to be fulfilled this year.
The only things I'm excited about that now seem just over the horizon are GTA6 and Nintendo first party games that aren't limited by running on 8 year old handheld hardware. Was hoping we'd get both this year so a 2025 Switch seems like a gut punch.
Imagine if they announce GTA6 for it, it's not beyond the realms of possibility if Nintendo have leant more into Switch 2 being more of a home console with handheld functional rather than the other way round.

I can't see GTA6 coming to the Switch 2. GTAV maybe, but Switch 2 will still need to be a handheld device and there really is a limit to what you can achieve with that.
Powerwise, I would be expecting a Steam Deck+.

Isn't it capable of running the Matrix unreal tech demo? (with DLSS and the like doing some very heavy lifting)
I wouldn't be surprised to see GTA6 on there if that's the case. Given how many million more annual sales they'd be guaranteed with an extra platform in the mix, I'd say Take2 are rubbing their grubby little mitts together in anticipation.

I wonder why GTA 5 didn’t come to Switch. It’s more powerful than the PS3 and 360. Even if it had been just 30fps, it could have run pretty well.

I'm sure I read in the GTA leak for 6 that just didn't want to. You know how Rockstar are, like why isn't Red Dead og on PC? They just do what they want even if it doesn't make sense to you and I.
And GTA 6 coming to Switch I dunno, let's not get carried away here, especially from a tech perspective. Sure target hardware was running the Matrix demo but we don't know how well, what resolution also if Rockstar wants to bring it there.

So in terms of Nintendo gimmicks, anyone still believe it will be “a dual-screen gaming device, that can be split in half”. Switch Too perhaps?

So in terms of Nintendo gimmicks, anyone still believe it will be “a dual-screen gaming device, that can be split in half”. Switch Too perhaps? I doubt it would actually happen, but if it did it would open the door to easier DS/3DS and Wii U ports of games that either need the dual screen or would work worse without it... The problem in theory is in the hardware. Detachable controllers are one thing, but half the console being able to be split and put back together over and over sounds more prone to problems from mishandling...

Maybe a foldable screen?
Though the issue is durability, and also 2 screens is going to boost costs, and need more power to drive it.
Never know with nintendo though,.

I can't see a world in which Nintendo would release a foldable screen in their current form.
