wunty - I stayed on NG0 as there was lots of wailing about what damage sponges some of the bosses are when you get into NG+1 etc I also really enjoyed being overpowered to be honest and having lots of mats & Vigor to try different weapons. Yes, you lose a lot of tension but it’s like in Resident evil when you unlock the rocket launcher and then take great pleasure in going back to tough enemies and wiping them off the map. It’s the simple pleasures 😂

Did anyone beat Paladin's Burden, on The Path of Devotion? He's the only boss I'm aware of that is still around earlier in the game that I haven't finished off. It doesn't help that you only have one life, and have to run through a tonne of mobs, but the main issue is him spamming re-heals at will, which I can't seem to stop. I'm wondering if I missed an obvious strategy...or cheese. I did beat him in the end, because I wanted to do Isaac's quest and unlock the Dark Crusader class by having Isaac summoned for the final Lightreaper bossfight. It was a bitch of a fight, I'll tell you that. I had to respec and put all my inferno points to radiance (I was putting points to inferno to turn my build to umbral for the next playthrough) and even then I beat him by the skin of my teeth. Had to run to him skipping all enemies except the dogs and that big archer right in front of the boss entrance, to save heals for the boss. The fact that he heals himself and casts lightning bolts constantly plus that you only face him in umbral makes it extra difficult but very satisfying when you actually beat him

I think I ought to try a radiance strategy. I've got 40 invested in that (as opposed to 50 in inferno) but haven't levelled any weapons apart from my dual-wielded raw mangler axes, which I've used for the whole game . They're maxed and slotted of course. I guess it may help to level a weapon that scales with radiance (as well as using spells, which I do, I switch rings so I can use radiance with my upgraded catalyst).

FlexibleFeline with those stats, let me introduce you to this umbral build (that's the one I'm aspiring to make):

FlexibleFeline with those stats, let me introduce you to this umbral build (that's the one I'm aspiring to make): Cheers, will check it out. I was going for an umbral build - the first catalyst I maxed was an effigy - but, with one or two exceptions, I found the spells quite underwhelming compared to inferno. But I'm definitely up for reviewing that.

JonFE Yeah, that build looks amazing - and I'm surprisingly close to be being able to use it...I've got the spells, I've actually fully upgraded that very catalyst. I think I've got at least one of the pick axes (I tend to keep one of every weapon but sell duplicates). My only worry is I don't think there are enough chunks left in the game to get two to +10. (If I wanted to start building it right away that is). But definitely tempted to give it a go!

Re: chunks, I've maxed two weapons (my dual-wielded axes) and two catalysts (one inferno, one umbral). So that's four. I know there's at least one I won't get - a reward for one of the online modes. I've read two are supposed to appear in or near a hammock in the hub, I'll need to check that out.

There may be the chunk cache downstairs at Skyrest - go past Stormund and down to where his men are and you’ll see it on a hammock. It’s from when the Devs made a pigs ear of upgrades and changed boss weapons maximum from +5 to +10. There were certain conditions for it to appear, so not sure if it will happen for you… On my first play through, it didn’t appear much before endgame but it’s been there from the start of subsequent games

I looked a while ago and couldn't find it but may check again later today. And if it's not there head to the wiki to see if there's any way for me to trigger it. It would be very handy for sure.

FlexibleFeline Even at +9 the axe would be useful I think, but of course +10 would be ideal

Well, just loaded it up and that supply - 2 chunks, 45 (!) large shards - was there this time, so my progress or something must have triggered it. But that's going to work nicely in helping me shaping the Infinitive Casting God Umbral build.
wOOt!

Finished it last night. Here's the review literally no one has been clamouring for:
Clickbait headline: Teen wank metal album cover brought to life as so-so-soulsborne.
You're alright:
+++: the above is tongue in cheek, the world, atmosphere, art style, level design is pretty damn great. It was a pleasure to roam around in when it was doing what it should. +++: umbral / axiom is a brilliant mechanic. I've missed this kind of thing since Soul Reaver. +++: generally satisfying upgrade systems - for the most part, nothing we haven't seen before, but with some tweaks. +++: bosses pitched the way I like them i.e. on the easy-ish side. This may well be a negative for most of you l33t nerds. +++: very fun to play as a caster - though there are only three types, some of the spells are pretty glorious.
Fuck you:
---: we've done the tech side to death, but it's a major issue and hasn't been properly fixed. Frame rate, pop in. Screwed at times, especially in areas full of particle effects and, for some reason, Skyrest Bridge. ---: dumb final boss (in the ending I got). I've said I enjoy novelty bosses but that doesn't include ones that are simply there for the purposes of exposition. ---: simply too obscure in terms of quest completion, especially NPCs. It's not unique to LotF but it's particularly annoying here. ---: another soulsborne pecadillo - hidden mobs just waiting to ambush you like the massive twats they are. Tedious. ---: not a lot of incentive to replay in terms of achievements...or rather, there is, but have you seen what you have to do? 3 playthroughs minimum, grinding for all weapons, rings, armour etc.
7 rhogars / umbral

FlexibleFeline I agree with everything you said to a T and would only add one more negative: ---: Don't include platforming bits to a Soulslike game, or if you do add them, for the love of all that's holy, don't force the player to run+jump without giving him a face button to run; I've lost count of the instances the thumbstick failed to register me running on a tiny platform, especially when I had to turn a bit for some more room

I’d agree with every word of that too, including the platform bits that weren’t really necessary
I’ve had my money’s worth, and it’s a good, solid game. I’ll be keeping hold in case they go the dlc route but Platinum can get tae fuck.

All those negatives can be applied to any souls-like to be honest. That doesn't stop them from all being valid mind you, just that those points seem to be inherent in the genre. The first negative is my main bugbear and I really hope it eventually gets sorted, but don't hold out much hopes.
Last boss WAS a bit shit but this is a game with very few novelty bosses (again, another staple of the genre) so I don't really hold this against it too much.

I have. Had no desire to play through it more than once - though that said I do now have it on my steam deck. The only Souls game I platinumed was DSII and that was because I loved it so much and what the fuck is wrong with you people (not you wunty, I know you are sane in this).

I bought this because- well, because I wanted to and the trailer looked cool and it's on sale (and I wanted to). Anyway, it's good so far. Bit of a long tutorial area because of all the stuff with the lamp but the visuals are great and so is the music. Just got to the first proper boss. Got her to her second form after a couple of tries, then she killed me to bits. Looking forward to getting back to it (plus she's really cool)
The parrying and visceral attacks provide a nice feeling
I went with the prisoner starting class, which doesn't seem all that bad despite it saying CHOOSE AT YOUR OWN RISK - the buckets were quite effective. I just liked it as a concept. I've got a sword now anyway
The character creation is really weird with the triangles. Body Type B C-ish Face looks like Natalie Portman so it was quite easy to pick one though
Performance wise, there's been a bit of hitching but honestly it hasn't really bothered me so far
Did anyone pay for the deluxe edition/added class and was it worth it? The write ups for each mention them being good for beginners or as 'advanced' classes. Does that mean there's more to it than just starting stats/equipment? Seems weird to describe them in that way otherwise. Buckets were fine, so I imagine anything would be

The prisoner is by far the worst starting class - bad weapon and equipment/armour. Rather you than me Some of the classes start with pretty good gear - Orion preacher has a good hammer and spell from the off. The dark crusader class is probably strongest and should see you through the early game a fairly r bit easier, but you have to pay. Ultimately it doesn’t matter as you make the character how you want.

Aunt Alison The deluxe "exclusive" class is actually unlocked in the game anyway (vague details in spoiler) if you complete a specific quest/kill a certain boss with the help of a certain NPC so it's only unlocked early in the deluxe version In any case, I don't think you are missing anything going with the standard version; enjoy the game I think it's rather good and performance has improved with the patches; if you're playing on XseX, keep in mind to fully quit the game once in a while, especially if you are experiencing huge framerate drops...

How important are the Inferno and Radiance stats? They sound like magic to me, which isn't something I usually bother with but apparently you need to raise Radiance it to get item descriptions, which makes it seem somewhat vital
Is going straight Strength and/or Agility fine?

I wouldn't know about Strength/Agility as I went Radiance and I'm currently raising Inferno as well to make an Umbral build.
I find it interesting that you mention raising Radiance to get item descriptions because in my playthrough it says "raise Inferno" to find out more; is the game really doing that, playing favorites on another stat than the one you actually use?

loto About Radiance or Inferno though? Because I'm at 64 Radiance and have noticed only the "raise Inferno" message... Unless both are required for different item descriptions and I failed to notice the Radiance one.

The game doesn't explain anywhere what the stats do as far as I can tell and I haven't seen any magic yet, but I'm assuming Radiance and Inferno are basically light and dark magic
I assume you can respec at some point anyway as I think I saw that option with an NPC
The jump in this is bad, even by Dark Souls standards. You have to leave it until the very last moment and then try not to roll off the other side by mistake. Knowing I have to make a jump scares me. It's also just really weird not being able to jump after playing Elden Ring

My current stats are something like Orion Preacher's basic stats, but with 48 HP, 32 Stamina, 64 Radiance and 38 Inferno, so I only raised my health, stamina and magic, but mostly used the Pieta sword until I got some really cool spells.
Yes, you can respec, it needs an item and you can do it with Pieta.
Yes, jumping in this game is awkward, especially because you often need to run beforehand and that's tricky at least for me...

I think either is a perfectly viable strategy, physical or magic I mean; it's not like some other Soulslike games where magic seems a lesser option until you get really strong/find powerful spells.
