It is odd. If they dont care about it, why should anyone else?
Presumably it is a corporate directive to keep everything low key this year incase things go turbo but all that really does is make them look like they arent bothered.

It really isn't anything to do with Eurogamer any more. Try finding a single instance of Eurogamer on the EGX website.

Just looking at the schedule and there are clearly still some links with a few mentions of EG.
Also, what the actual fuck? £20?!
"6:00 PM - 8:00 PM | EGX Theatre
Oxventure - Outside Xbox & Outside Xtra Live Event Day 1 (Ticketed Event - £20.00) Buy Tickets Here"

That's a shame it's so quiet. I feel bad for the people that went but also the exhibitors that turned up and are trying to make the best of it. Reminds me of a few print expos I've attended over the past few years, shadows of their former selves with just fuck all to do and see. Depressing.
I probably meant to post this in the EGX thread but whatever.

Kind of feels like the end stages of EG, not sure how long the site will have left.

Kind of feels like the end stages of EG, not sure how long the site will have left. It's primed for corporate takeover by FonkGeek inc.

Kind of feels like the end stages of EG, not sure how long the site will have left. RPS is basically a very few interesting articles subsumed by a deluge of incredibly granular 'How to' articles and deals designed to gather random search engine eyeballs now (How to save your progress in... seriously?). I imagine it can survive like that for a long time, but with barely any individual character beyond the name on the masthead.

I imagine it can survive like that for a long time, but with barely any individual character beyond the name on the masthead. I assume that you're trying to follow RPS through the regular RSS feed? Try not to. the RSS feed is completely unfiltered, but all those "how to" articles do not show up at all on the main website unless you click on "guides". The "Latest" page is the old blog format, and ofc. the main page nowadays is just nicely curated. It's what I use.
RPS also offers filtered RSS feeds, being the following: For webpage variants of these feeds, just remove the /feed/ bit.
(there's also a /guides but who wants that)
You can just stick to the last two and you're basically set.
You can also join the RPS discord where I spent a somewhat silly amount of time setting up the MonitoRSS bot to do this in a fancy way

Just on their supporters only section; is that content that's showing on the front page genuinely all they've managed to put up in it so far?
I know they said something about it showing up less on the front page for non-subscribers after launch, so I'm assuming there is actual content being pumped out for them and what I'm seeing is just a fraction. Because from where I'm sitting, still being able to see that 90's pop article is quite concerning.

So far there's only one "supporters only" article, the other three need the premium package.

To be fair, they did say at the beginning it would be one monthly editor column, and one weekly 'other stuff' column. So, yeh. 5 articles a month (for premium subs - yeh, just one for supporter subs).
It's not great, but it's what they said.

Yep, £4 for no ads and a monthly dribble from Oli, or £6 for no ads, a monthly dribble from Oli and one article every week so the rest of staff can close their blogspot accounts.

Christ. I hadn't taken a massive amount of notice but I kinda thought they'd at least big it up a bit at first.
I guess it's not exactly off piste having seen those clips from EGX though.

I'm sure after a while the amount of content will look better, but yeah, launching with nothing wasn't a good look. That and EGX seem tinged with some board member going "we HAVE TO DO THIS" and all the actual staff going "Christ, if we must..."

I'm not really of the "FUCKING JUDASGAMER, I HOPE THEY DIE" mindset, so seeing them giving off the air of a place surviving on a skeleton crew there to keep the lights on is a bit of a shame to me.

Not sure where this narrative of the EG subscription being to pay for exclusive content comes from - and that the sub is shit because the bonus content is shit. Its only purpose, Shirley, is to support the site you know and the content you're accustomed to getting from them. The supporter exclusive drivel was always only the cherry on top - not the cake. If you want to support EG, feel free to pony up. But it's basically a tip jar at the bar, you're not paying for another round. It seems odd to expect that bonus stuff to be anything worthwhile?
If they still bothered to review more than one game a month, and if Digital Foundry weren't available on YouTube, I might've gone for it.

A tip jar when the company that just bought the site turns over billions per year is a bit of an insult

Most places with a subscriber model (whether it's proprietary or patreon or something) do make exclusive content that's usually worth it, so I disagree with that.

Which was all fine while they were a plucky independent (albeit a plucky independent generating pretax profits of a couple of million a year), not so fine when they're a cog in a £40bn multinational corporation.

It is a shame to see it go downhill, but then we're not their target demographic anymore and haven't been for some time, and the people who never ventured past the front page anyway seem perfectly happy with it.

But they explicitly said it was all about supporting the site - not paying for new stuff. You can argue that it's a shit deal - and I'd agree that it is a shit deal - but I think they've been pretty up front about it. The pile-on here about the bonus content being wank seems unwarranted. It is wank, but it was always going to be. It's there to sweeten the deal, but it's not the deal.

A tip jar when the company that just bought the site turns over billions per year is a bit of an insult Sure. But most of us are adults, right? That's just not the way multinational corporations work, and never has been. That's why getting bought out is universally seen as The End of Days for whomever is getting snapped up. Which makes me think there's a gun to the head somewhere. "Fund yourself, or pull the plug."

They literally have two tiers "pauper package with nothing, PREMIUM PLUS WITH EXTRA CONTENT" - that is literally the deal they offer. Literally literally.

😎 I understand. But I believe it's just an "if you'd like to SUPER support us, here's another tier with another sweetener". I dunno - feels like you guys are being really harsh on this. Look at the Digital Foundry Patreaon, for example. The high tiers get you access to uncompressed. video yada yada yada. Nobody wants to sit and pore over uncompressed footage of games. They want the analysis video, with the fanboy talking points. Again: the tiers are there for people that want to support the site/channel/service.

I would assume ad revenues are as stable as ever, maybe even higher during lockdowns. I would assume RELX have put a gun to a loss making Reed/ReedPop’s head to generate more income, who’ve then leveraged Gamer Network to milk some subscriber money on top of what they already draw in. In which case they can get fucked

Buuuut again the standard model for this kind of thing is that there's actual content worth reading/watching/listening to. I think it's perfectly fine to judge it based on the standard model literally every other place offers. Very very very few are just "guys subscribe because you really like us", and those that are are small indie places or have a way cheaper sub that isn't bordering on Netflix pricing.
