My last purchase of 2023. Was going to wait for the bichii review but just going to dive in. Know nothing about this DnD so expecting to have to do a lot of reading.
Will I get past the character creation before 2024z

Had a real case of choice paralysis earlier in Act 2 heading into the mind flayer colony. Need Shadowheart to come with so she can talk to Nightsong, but also had a whole thing with Gale beforehand as he needs to carry out his quest for Mystra, but then Wyll has to do something for Mizora and finding his dad which would be a nice enough party but now Jaheria is a party member too that wants to slay Ketheric. . It's a shame because you can't swap party members once you're in. I've left Wyll out and already regretting it as there's stuff there I'd wanna see him react to. I also rescued Zevlor from the pod and was surprised to find that he took out a mind flayer in one turn basically. I love when games surprise you in that way by showing this character is actually a hidden badass and they do it through gameplay rather than a cutscene because you know what those numbers mean and how impressive it is

This is melting my brain and I’m just reading all the tool tips on the character creation screen.
Quality of Performance on PS5? Or just whatever?

Maybe I can reload then

Haha it turns out I can still go back to the old areas. Although now they are very easy but I'm using it to level up a little so the main area I'm on is not so hard. It's all about dagger spell and the sun shine beam. Both are just so much mor powerful than anything else in the game that I've come across.
I still think the combat system is pretty average and for a game that is full of combat I'm surprised by all the 10/10 reviews. There is no doubt the characters are awesome and the RPG choices are fantastic and fluid but 10??

I think it might become a 10 for me, unless Act 1 is the highlight and it's downhill from here. Super impressed with the level design in the Underdark. It's beautiful, with some amazing vistas for a CRPG.
Now 60 hours in and still have a few things to mop up before moving on with the main quest. Just hit level 6. It's the most I've enjoyed an rpg in many years (certainly since Witcher 3, maybe even longer). As you can probably tell from my glacial rate of progress, I tend to methodically explore every square inch of map before moving on and BG3 really seems to reward this approach with more quests, loot and XP.
The combat is becoming more enjoyable as I get the hang of it. I'm able to do almost all the fights at the first time of asking, though most are reasonably close and I do try and make a plan before engaging where possible. Nothing too taxing, just examine the mobs to see any weaknesses, then pay attention to the environment and think about placement. At the moment I generally cast the laughter spell on whoever looks the meanest, then sling a Great Fireball on any mobs clustered together and haste on Lae'zel to run around battering the weaker mobs before everyone gangs up on the big bad at the end once they are isolated.
Now that I've typed that out I'm sure Act 2 will spank me.

Just started the Gauntlet of Shar and encountered a bug that disarmrd me and permanently lost my rate sword, had to reload an earlier save :-(
This whole area under the morgue I didn't expect to be here. Just thought I'll knock off this quick quest to kill Raphael's enemy before going to Moonrise Towers..

Just thought I'll knock off this quick quest to kill Raphael's enemy before going to Moonrise Towers.. If you haven't been to Moonrise Towers at all you might want to visit once before finishing the Gauntlet of Shar. You will get a warning at some point that going forward will progress the overall story, so you can poke about without accidentally causing any trouble, but finishing it will close off quite a few side quests. Now 60 hours in and still have a few things to mop up before moving on with the main quest. Just hit level 6. You're not alone, I think it took me 70-something hours to finish Act 1 on my first run. Act 2 is a little shorter and less sprawling and then Act 3 opens up with just a staggering amount of optional content again (though you could race to the finish very quickly).

Hoooooly, well I'm glad I reloaded a save *Act 2 spoiler* Redoing the attempt to free Mizora with Wyll in the party and not only was there more dialogue, there was a prompt to persuade Mizora to give us a reward which I passed and it gave Wyll a legendary rapier that has the ability to summon a cambion to join the part too. It's crazy that could have been missed.

The quest line seems to naturally progress anyway but there probably is a fair bit I’ve missed out on.

I wasn’t expecting the comic relief after recruiting Minsc So that’s jaheira’s quest done, not much to it really. I might close out Astarion’s next. Been fully levelled for a while now, which is a bit of a shame.

Minsc is great. Didn’t use him much but he’s basically Drax from GotG.

Picked up a cool 10k in cash at the same time. All happened in an area that would be quite easy to miss.

Oh man, that fight *End of Act 2* with the Githyanki ambush leading to the astral plane and the Emperor reveal is rough. Characters getting decimated in one turn as the monks can hit like 3 or 4 times. Thought I played a blinder with Lae'zel jumping up and pushing one of them off a ledge but it did no fall damage and then someone jumped up and pushed Lae'zel that far back she fell to an endless void. Guessing shoving them is the way to go?

I'm pretty sure everyone (including you) in that fight has featherfall. So fall damage isn't a thing (unless you get pushed into a void)

I went back did some side fluff, lvl up once and went back. Did the gauntlet, got her to throw it away instead of killing and now about to go up the tower. Reloaded quick just to see the difference between throwing away and the killing. Was a tough choice but I went the "nice" route. I started my play through as a mean character but I just can't do it, I'm too nice.
Still have no idea how normal difficulty could even be possible. Every battle on easy is a long slog where I just come out on top. Looks like two of the main ridiculously hard battles I could have avoided when I googled after. One I could have with a 20+ dice roll and one if I did some lengthy invisibility move then a crafty snipe.
Generally I think of myself as a pretty decent gamer and play most things on hard. Clearly I'm no strategist or with this I'm just totally missing something. Perhaps it's patience as I have all these items I never use and the thought of losing a 30 minute battle is too depressing.
In both major battles the only reason I scraped through was my owl bird transformation, that thing wrecks. Just hit lvl 7 and still half my team don't get as many actions as the 10 enemies I'm up against.
I started the tower last night and the first room must have been 12 of them. I just noped and turned it off for the night. A quick non spoiler search shows yes apparently there are a couple of ways to avoid via invisible potions or climbing. Will give that a try.
I'm going to bin my wyll, outside of the dagger storm move and Eldridge blast he is utter useless. Devil girl is a beast, my character is pretty strong and shadow heart is a bit meh but can be strong in the right situation.
Happy Christmas. Xxxxxx.

I played on easy also. In fps/action/etc I'm better than average but I can't do planned engagements to save my life which is why I don't bother with turn based games, so I definitely get it. Also I can't be fucked reading item descriptions etc and agonising over when/how to use them which I understand is entirely a *me* problem and not a game design issue. I loved every second I played of this though (after restarting... Because I fucked everything in the beginning).

I used to love checking out the item descriptions and using everything but now I look it like a waste of my precious gaming time. I'm also really liking the game but mainly for all the characters, talking and stories. Certainly not the combat and I love xcom combat (as in I don't mind turn based at all just not in bg3).

I can’t preach as I’m often in the “Hit things harder” camp but I get the feeling that combat in this game is much more about experimentation than bludgeoning enemies to death with increasingly big hammers.
Make your own fun is the gist.

It's whatever you tune your characters to, which is one of the reasons why it's so good. I went with the hit things hard strategy and used Shadowheart or Wyll for AoE a lot of the time and only found the start hard while I got to grips with things. But I also read about classes and what routes to go down to maximise levelling for the type of player I am and synergy across the team.
Bashing things with big weapons got me through every encounter!

My feeling is that you're under levelled. I was still in act 1 at lvl7. Seems like you've rushed through the main plot quests and ignored, or not looked for, the profusion of side quests to get your party levelled up. Maybe give some thoughts to your strategy. Buff your melee fighters with potions, elixirs or spells (are you doing the whole alchemy thing?), use area of effect spells on choke points. Also, consider party balance with regards to casters and melee fighters. The combat is a doddle so you're definitely doing something wrong.

Possibly a stupid question but how do you know you're in Act 2? I'm now doing the Crèche which I think is Act 2 but I don't think I got any message to that effect.

Who knows eh! Half the time no idea I'm near where I need to be for a quest.
The story, characters, writing, the choices available are all 9-10/10. The UI and controls and menus on controller are maybe a 4/10 and the combat a 6-7/10.
I've just hit the start of act 3 so time for bed. As always I only beat the end of act 2 boss because of owlbear. My only two hopes are owl bear or a really tight choke point.

You get a fairly clear warning asking if you really want to proceed and that certain side quests will auto-resolve. Act 2 starts when you get down to the Underdark (I think).

No, act 2 is the shadow-cursed lands. You can go there through either the mountain pass or the underdark (or do both), but both of those places are still in act 1.

Yeah the journal changes up to say Act 2 when you hit the shadow-curse.

I'm guessing it's not normal for shadow heart to dye her hair white after a normal camp rest? . A new look I guess for act 3.

Nope. I just rested right at the start of act 3 and then she had white hair.
