As the first 2 are some of my favourite games I am anticipating this. However the writing (the narrative in particular) on Divinity wasn't all that great so I'm still waiting on reviews to see if it's worth while. The stuff about mechanics they've put out sounds promising.
Also still a fan of Real Time with Pause, irons out various mechanical annoyances with turn-based and it's not crazy slow during easy bits.

Baldur's Gate and other Infinity Engine games (and Pillars of Eternity) are much messier even though they technically use a similar system. I like those games but I'm not a fan of the RTwP. Trying to micromanage is tedious and especially in Baldur's Gate the "correct" way to play is often to just throw all your biggest AoE spells at the enemy immediately, preferably while they're still off-screen. I understand why people have nostalgia for it, but it's really not a great combat system. I don't mind Rtwp overall, but it can get really messy once one arrives at the higher levels. It was particularly egregious with Neverwinter Nights 2 from what I remember, but the Pillars-games seemed easier to read. I probably like the IE-games the most as long as the characters are still relatively low level. They really need some options to makes things interesting, but they also need some more resistance so as to not seemingly spontaneously disintegrate all of the time.
But once combat encounters turn into an unreadable mess where I am frequently asking myself what exactly happened to a spell somebody was supposed to be casting or why a healthy character is suddenly on his last leg... that can end up being frustrating. Sometimes the combat log helps, sometimes it doesn't.

Was there ever actually any tactics in Baldur's Gate combat? I seem to remember it just being a big mosh where all the spellcasters just launched all their big effects in the first 1 second and then from that point on you couldn't really tell what was happening and it was mostly luck. You'd occasionally click to make sure your people were all attacking the best target, but that was about it.
Once you got Fireball, the entire game became much easier iirc.

More logistics than tactics I think. Deciding how much you want to use for any given combat encounter. And what spells to have memorized.
I haven't played BG2 in a long while, but the encounter design in the Icewind Dales seemed better overall. I think limited options can make the decisionmaking feel more purposeful as well. Once you arrive at high-level enemies and don't know exactly what their saves and resistances are, then things start to feel a bit random.
I guess Temple of Elemental Evil felt the most tactical (5-foot-step, attacks of opportunity, Total Defense etc.) out of all the D&D-games I've played. And of course it was turn-based.

Bingo. Although arguably Balder is an acceptable spelling.

Yeah you can get hoard to fall in to choke points, rogues need to be behind things to back stab properly, etc. Flanking is more of a thing in Pillars, presumably as the engine is just more advanced. I'm not sure what more tactics a turn based game has?

I'm not sure if I ever managed to get a rogue to do a backstab. There didn't seem much opportunity for sneaking up on enemies when they were always on alert and every fight was a bigrandom melee. I was probably just rubbish at it.

I was probably just rubbish at it. Personally, most of my combats started with me stealthing the rogue and going up to backstab whoever the most dangerous enemy was (usually the mage). It's harder to do that after combat starts, but there's usually some option for going invisible through magic. Backstabbing (and surrounding him with a billion summons to block movement) was how I killed Drizzt in the first game.

I was probably just rubbish at it. I have never played one and the ones I include in my parties are just there for the usual reasons (traps, locks etc.). I never even try to use them for backstab, as it doesn't seem particularly safe and it also just isn't necessary. Though I think I have sometimes used them to scout ahead.

I don't know if I needed to or not, but "scout ahead and look for enemies/traps" was a huge deal with my rogue party members. You can use them as spotters to aim an early fireball or cloudkill.

Loved BG1 & 2 back in the day. Lost hours to them but never finished either as I never managed to finish anything even back then! I've been keeping my eye on this one after enjoying DOS2 on the Steam Deck (also only halfway through..) so even if it's not the best way to play it I think I'll look at picking BG3 up at some stage. I'd go for PS5 version but I never get that much time in front of the TV!

One of my most satisfying moments in gaming was completing bg trilogy
Moded bg1 plus expansion plus bg2 and Throne as one game on bg2 engine and game rules.
Took few years but man. What an amazing adventure it was.
Wish I had time to replay it once more...
Edit: according to my post on gog it took 200h to beat it and 2 and half years.

Nowadays I don’t even load up a lot of the games I buy, they just collect in a virtual snowdrift that I have to shovel off the hard-drive to make space for more Minecraft saves.

God. I remember reading bg1 book and it was so boring. Maybe as bad or worse than stellaris book (another one I read and completely despise). The canon story sounds bad lol! Hope they just ignore ir and be more respectful to the one of the greatest games.
What is everyone preferred class. I might try to play as evil warlock.
I generally play as goodie good shoes so might try to be evil here.

I was watching a video yesterday of Larian talking through the classes and they all sound interesting. No idea what I'm going to go with. Seems like they are going really deep on detail with everything and each class is going to have something unique to play with.
Also saw an article talking about a Druid sub-class that lets you spawn fungus zombie creatures from corpses that sounded amazing.
I expect I'll go with one of the predefined characters and will make my decision on the origin story I like the sound of the most.

Hi all I posted in the laptop thread but thought I would ask here as well. I'm after an off the shelf gaming laptop with min 15inch screen that will handle BG3 silky-smooth right out of the box (as it were) with no issues, that is all it needs to do. I have a budget of £1000 TY for any help.

I don't really like how druids play in DnD, but I like them thematically so I often end up playing one anyway. Otherwise some other magic user, because they just tend to have more stuff to play around with.
I'm incapable of playing evil characters on a first playthrough. Usually good, but not above doing the odd sketchy job for cash or meteing out a bit of frontier justice.

They need to sort out the download equivalent of swapping out dvds.
75Gb download for the first half, then you have to swap it out for another 75Gb download to continue.
