I don't get the idea of visiting a sunken passenger ship that killed loads of people appealing tbh. I'd absolutely go under the sea for the chance to see some sort of natural wonder or wildlife, or maybe even some old warship or whatever. But a luxury cruise liner that's mainly still in the public consciousness because of a Hollywood movie? Nah, you're alright.

Calling then adventurers is a bit much, I agree, but it's like space tourists. I see it in much the same way. Drown tourists? Imploderists?

One of them had already been down to see the Titanic nearly 40 times so you would assume he knew the safe/right way to do it.

Heard on the radio that they don't do this sort of thing for warships as they are seen as war graves and it's seen as being in poor taste. But surely the Titanic should be seen like that as well?

Oceangate were going to do trips to the Bismarck, which hopefully that won't be happening now, it's at a greater depth than the Titanic at 4500m.

It is a shame though. It's still a goup of people that died in a terrible accident, regardless of circumstances. Yet there needs to be strict regulation for this kind of shit. The sub was simply not suited to the task, and they should never have been allowed to go down there in it in the first place. I agree that they shouldn’t have been allowed to sell tickets for this, but you need to allow any nutter to try out whatever in these remote places if there’s no chance to harm other people or nature. I’m pretty sure the Wright flyer didn’t conform to existing regulations either. They should however make the nutter sign a no rescue thing, people shouldn’t have to risk their lives if it goes wrong.

They should have tested this on poorer people first. * stolen from The Onion

I thought this article was pretty dreadful, in all honesty:
But "thrill-seekers" and "rich tourists" is exactly what they were.
It doesn't make them bad people, and it doesn't make the accident any less tragic for their loved ones, but let's not make shit up just 'cause we feel bad that they died.

I definitely get the appeal. After all, what else are billionaires going to spend their cash on, other than pointless dumb shit? But yeah, lots to be said about the circumstances and vessel etc used.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-65998914clear that had he not been one of the casualties the CEO would spend the rest of his life in court, quite possibly jail feel a little bit for the fresh out of college engineers who are now going to face a lot of the anger and/or litigation, in the absence of the person actually at fault. fresh out of college engineers coming up with ground breaking innovations and making serious mistakes is supposed to happen - a responsible company & CEO has layers of seniority & experience to distinguish one from another and ensuring the mistakes don't make it past testing

Just to add a contrary viewpoint, if I was rich, I would definitely have been intrigued enough that I might have bought a ticket. I'm fascinated by the Titanic and always have been.
Hindsight is 20/20 and while I'd of course know I'd be accepting some risks, I can't honestly say I'd know the difference between this sub and the non-implody sort that have been down there thousands of times without incident.
The game controller thing is the only thing that would raise an eyebrow but I could have dismissed it knowing that they are used all the time in the military.
Though don't get me wrong, you couldn't pay me to go on one now

I'm fascinated by the titanic too but not enough to put myself in that situation so far underwater, even if it was regulated and safe etc.
Each to their own innit

If I were a billionaire with money to burn on something extreme I think I'd rather be into the upper reaches of the atmosphere than deep underwater. It's far safer and actually has people regulating it.

The view out of that little port at that depth must have been absolute shite, too. If you're going to die doing something stupid, definitely go up into space.

I still can’t get over the fact that the interior was just an empty cramped tube with a couple of cheapy computers in it. Why the fuck would anyone want to get in that!? You should have seen the toilet.

Tbf one of the BBC's reporters did ask how they can justify the emergency response for this compared to the response to recent migrant disasters.
The response was "well all life is precious" 😬

I can’t remember if I said it in this thread or the other one but he gives such a strong Mark Rylance in Don’t Look Up vibe. That bit near the end when they’re all in mission control in particular.

One of them had already been down to see the Titanic nearly 40 times so you would assume he knew the safe/right way to do it. To be fair, they could have gone down there any number of times, a screw-up only needs to happen once for... Well, this to happen.
