Tbf, if I was a billionaire I'd defo want to get my money's worth. I'd probably just pay James Cameron to take me down himself.
Space is the better choice. Though I'd probably do something much more unconventional.

I don't know all details about OceanGate but what bugs me is were there any journeys to the Titanic wreck before or was this the Titan's maiden voyage so to speak? It’s been down there a couple of times. Which might be part of the problem, one theory is that the carbon fibre can get weaker over repeated pressure cycles

I'd take deep sea over space but there are much more interesting things than a sunken ship, unless there be booty

Just caught up on the email exchange between the CEO and the lawyer. Why is it always the most fucking unhinged knockwurst who ends up with the money to do absolutely insane things.

The fuck is BoJo smoking these days?
Multiple individuals throughout the history of our species have died "while pushing out the frontiers of human knowledge and experience" - George Mallory, Amelia Earhart, Lawrence Oates, the crew of the Challenger, and *far* too many others to mention - and it's utterly preposterous to lump the Titan guys in with *actual* pioneers.
The wreck of the Titanic was located in 1985, and the first crewed visit took place the following year. What the five passengers in the Titan were doing was in no way pioneering, much less "heroic."
Now please drift off into the obscurity you've rightfully earned, you cretinous cuntrag.

Their lives are more valuable tbh. Seriously not given the life policies they will have. Then, in the absence of a proper inheritance tax, we get the guillotine out for their inheritors until someone gets the message.

Meanwhile, Obama questioned why we’re spending so much time on the sun when hundreds died on the Greek migrant ship.
He might not be able to be President again, but could he come over here and be Prime Minister?

I went on a submarine in Mauritius. We went probably about 50 ft down and saw a ship wreck. It was fun. Happy to be recognized as a hero who was pushing the frontiers of human knowledge and experience.

If wealthy people want to spend stupid money doing stupid and obviously* dangerous things then that's up to them. We don't need to regulate informed competent people doong stupid shit that harms themselves.
The idea that these people were doing anything noble or advancing anything is preposterous.
(*The waiver they signed made it clear it was unregulated and unapproved)

Meanwhile, Obama questioned why we’re spending so much time on the sun when hundreds died on the Greek migrant ship. He might not be able to be President again, but could he come over here and be Prime Minister? Yeah, he is not wrong about this. Hundreds of poor people get stranded looking for a better life, with every hope of rescue? Governments say "awwwww do we have to?", nobody cares, bucks get passed, hundreds die, and still nobody cares. 5 rich people get stranded on a deep-sea joyride with basically no hope of rescue? Everyone cares, minute-by-minute updates, 5 people die. Let's spend $100m on the resc... sorry, salvage operation. It really is quite fucked.

I think the difference to be fair is that we heard about the migrant ship when it was already too late. The sub story had the drama of the potential rescue, just like the Thai soccer team trapped in the cave. None of those guys were billionaires as I recall.

But it's not just our hearing about it. It's everything, from the politics to the resources being put into saving the people, to the blink-and-you'll-miss-it news coverage.
It's not a new problem, and I'm certainly no better at paying attention to things happening around the world that are probably more important than some rich idiots killing themselves. But proportion is a good thing to be reminded of from time to time.
Nfi what to do about it though, it feels like an uphill struggle to get people to care about some things. Politicians don't care because they (probably correctly) don't think the public cares, and the public doesn't care because they're either not paying attention, or because they've been fed rubbish about poor brown people coming to take the jobs and do crimes.

I guess as well as the cinematic ticking clock drama of the oxygen countdown you also had the media interest perked up by there being British people on board (and yes, white people).
Its a bit of an extension of the phenomena of why a missing cute blonde girl will get wall to wall media coverage but victims from minority backgrounds get next to none.
Plus we’ve been shown migrant crossings and deaths for years so its become normalised - and some of highest profile politicians and newspapers actively want the boats sunk and no rescue launched.
Not saying any of that is good just speculating why the press cares about one and not the other.
