The other owner of the company is still ploughing the “You can’t innovate inside a regulatory framework” line. Yes you can. You get it tested under the current rules and prove that it’s as safe or safer than conventional designs. Simple. Anyone pushing that line isn't far away from a snake oil merchant IMO.

I have bungee jumped before. Yes you have to sign a form, but come on, nobody would have a bungee jumping business if there were any reasonable chance of something going wrong. Even if they weren't legally accountable for a bungee jumping death, their business would be ruined. And rightly so! There's a huge difference between that and taking people to 4km below sea level in a tin can. Maybe that will change with more regulation and safety restrictions, but right now, what they did looks like the height of idiocy. Maybe, but in each case you're basically putting your faith in the company and/or the equipment, and you have limited ability to check it out yourself (unless you're an expert) There's an average of 1.1 bungee jumping deaths per year, and the US alone has 15-20 skydiving deaths per year. So there is risk, but people carry on doing it anyway. Nothing will ever be 100% safe, but 1 bungee jumping death a year... seems pretty good to me, out of however many millions of jumps get done safely every year. But anyway, the difference is that those pastimes have rigid safety standards. Maybe standards exist for deep sea submersibles, but if they do they're either not stringent enough, or not properly enforced. And that would need to change for me to think about going anywhere near one of those things.

The standards don't apply in international waters.

That’s not even a *good* conspiracy theory to push. If I was going for a conspiracy, I’d say they saw unspeakable horrors while they were down there, went mad, and the banging we heard was them trying (and eventually succeeding) to deliberately implode the sub rather than return to the surface. Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn!

This morning I was reading the article on "atmospheres of pressure" that the sub was subjected to (around 300) and all I could think about was that episode of Futurama where the ship is getting dragged into the deep and they ask the professor how many atmospheres of pressure the ship can withstand and he replies 'well it's a spaceship, so anywhere between one and zero'.

Very sad news. Honestly, I just think if you’re going to spend $25k on something that they tell you beforehand is a death trap… kind of on you. But also this is where Trumpist Don’t Tread on Me bullshit gets you. Just don’t do helicopters or submarines. Both are shit and will get you killed. $250k. Yeah...

I still can’t get over the fact that the interior was just an empty cramped tube with a couple of cheapy computers in it. Why the fuck would anyone want to get in that!?

Come on, don't you want to briefly see the Titanic a hundred feet away, through a tiny porthole in near total darkness? Sure you can see it in much higher resolution and brightness and comfort by watching a documentary, and not be spending $250k for the privilege, and not be trapped in a cramped sub for 8 hours with shit food, and not be in danger at all, but... uh... Sorry, lost my train of thought there

Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea had a flying sub, but it was more of a jet-sub than a heli-sub really. Must have been safe though, David Hedison was over 90 when he died.

It is a shame though. It's still a goup of people that died in a terrible accident, regardless of circumstances. Yet there needs to be strict regulation for this kind of shit. The sub was simply not suited to the task, and they should never have been allowed to go down there in it in the first place.

Mind you, I remember reading a story a couple of years back about a flat earther that built his own rocket so he could see (or not, in his case) the curvature of the earth. It didn't go too well. People will always do shit like this.

Murder suicide. One of them decided to check out, and what better way than being crushed so fast you barely sense it. There are examples of airline pilots deciding to take a planeload with them, because why the hell not. Humanity. That's my conspiracing done for the day and I'm not even out of bed. I think the investigation into it will go on for decades. So many potential causes. So unlikely they’ll ever know for certain.

I dunno, I can understand the appeal to a degree. I mean why bother doing anything if you can just watch it on a documentary. And I am finding the level of nyah-nyah towards them a bit odd tbh.
There's a question over how safe the sub is (answer: not at all) and I've no issue mocking the actual sub, and the people buying into maybe should have been a bit more conscious that it was a safety nightmare (though I doubt it was sold as such), but I kinda get why somebody would want to do it.

I can see a point of doing extreme shit like this if it is your job, or if you are rescuing people, or if it is for scientific discovery, or exploration, or professional underwater photography, or finding rare minerals, etc etc. I still wouldn't do it for most of those things, but I would understand it more. But doing it just for kicks? You're right, I don't understand! Even if you don't die, you can't even show people any photos you took, because for most of the time you can't fucking see anything!

But you are still only in a metal can, moving slowly down the ocean and end up viewing it through a tiny porthole. I can't imagine the experience to be that mind blowing. The only thing stopping you from doing it is money. It's not like journeying on foot to the South Pole or Climbing Everest. Also calling them adventurers is insulting to people who have worked to achieve something.

And yes, watching a documentary is no substitute for going and actually doing a thing. I love travel and doing interesting stuff, and would never substitute that for watching things on TV.
But if actually doing it is this dangerous, then yes... give me the 4k footage Mr Cameron, that is enough for me.

I see it in much the same way.

It is a sad story and a scary one, albeit an implosion sounds like it won't have been as bad a way to go compared to the air slowly running out.
I can see the appeal though. Lots of people scuba dive and is something I wouldn't mind trying one day. Perhaps that is a bit like comparing someone that does the rock climbing wall at their local centre to someone free solo climbing, but I can easily see how one leads to the other. I would love to go into space one day and see the Earth, something that equally carries with it risks (albeit ones that I imagine will negliable by the time it becomes something average schmucks like me can do).
The company seem like a bunch of cowboys and it appears that there were definitely warning signs that should have made them think twice about going with that company, but I don't think they are completely mad for wanting to have the experience.

Even if I was that way inclined I'd have noped out when they pulled out a Logitech gamepad.
At least get a first party controller FFS.
(Maybe not a Switch though, controller drift seems like it would be an issue)

There's an old photo of the sub when it was using an official DualShock 3 but that probably died so they replaced it with a Logitech one.
Not wired though which makes no sense at all.
