I got it because for my kids the suit collecting is literally all they care about. I had to practically platinum the first just to keep my youngest happy.

I get that. I'm really looking forward to getting the Symbiote suit. As I play this I can't help but notice that feels like what I call a "statement game" the kind of game where a dev at the height of the powers makes something and is saying look what we can do. Everything just feels expensive and well, "more".

Yeah. I find all the AAA Sony games to be kind of similar somehow despite them being made by different devs. There’s just something in the presentation of this, God of War, Last of Us etc that feels really familiar.

The black suit is pretty cool. It feels more raw, although all the mechanics are basically the same.
I still don’t really like Insomniacs suit designs for any of the characters, and haven’t since the first game (I don’t rate their sporty Spider or overly mechanically blocky villain designs), but their whole take on the Spider-man universe is just built so well. Really enjoying the story here again.

Yeah. I find all the AAA Sony games to be kind of similar somehow despite them being made by different devs. There’s just something in the presentation of this, God of War, Last of Us etc that feels really familiar. You play it for ten minutes, then watch a film, then play for ten minutes. It flips between structured and unstructured gameplay every time it wants to hammer home an emotional point or do something cool. It never actually feels like you’re playing during the big moments in these AAA games. Which is fine, I guess, but I’d like to be the one hitting the dragon with the axe or rocket punching the sandman.

I think there are playable grandstand moments in these AAA games but you are right that those only tend to be at chapter end or game end moments. Most of the build up scenes are non or minimal interaction.
It’s understandable though otherwise you'd need $1bil game development over 10yrs with a team of 1k+ people to end up with essentially a 15-25hr fully interactive tv show with blockbuster film level mid and end sequences.
And even then gamers would be like ok… now why’s this not on psvr2?!
I personally find Sonys blockbusters to be stunning games to experience at the very top of the tree. But you do have to take them for what they are. Like the decision you take when you watch the lord of the rings trilogy films rather than game of thrones?

Wingsuit just makes things so much more fun to traverse the city. I do enjoy web swinging, but I found myself in the other two using the subways a lot, so maybe the wingsuit will stop me doing that.
Edit: or maybe there aren’t fast travel locations I haven’t got that far haha

I'm assuming fast travel unlocks at some point after the mess from the opening section gets cleaned up. I've found a few subway stations but they're full of sand. Or maybe you need to do the sandman crystal things to unlock it. Yeah, traversal is ace with the wingsuit so not too bothered about when it unlocks. You can cover so much ground quickly if you use one of the rooftop slingshots to get started.

I can see why they thought it was necessary. The map is huge and it gets you across the river but I have been rationing it. I try to swing to any objective under 2K or something.
The loop de loop skill is really fun, so I don’t think they have slept on traversal skills to keep swinging interesting.

If you look at the districts on the map (which is a fucking hideous travesty on the eyes) you can see how many things you need to do to unlock the fast travel points.
Only played a couple of hours last night, but tremendous fun (es expected).

Really enjoy the likes of Uncharted and Spider-Man, but one of my main gripes has often been the lack of player agency during the bigger set pieces. I get why it's that way obviously, you can't choreograph something that tightly with the player in total control, but a little more to do would often be nice. It's been a while but I vaguely remember the plane and subsequent desert sequence in Uncharted 3 being a prime example. Stunning to look at and watch obviously, but I remember being quite taken aback at the fact that for close to half hour all I did was nudge the thumbstick forward occasionally and press a button or two sporadically.

Quick time events get a bad rap but its better than just watching I'd have thought.
This issue is especially frustrating when there is a load of talking but the story isn't especially engaging (HFW)

Not sure I get the criticism in this type of game. I think there’s a lot of times when you aren’t just quick timing and you are doing other things. Just picking faults for the sake of it imo.

I don’t think it’s a criticism, per se, just pointing out why a lot of Sony exclusives feel similar. They take control away from you during the big story beats.
Which is fine, to a point, nobody seems to have worked out how to square spectacle with player agency yet and you have to get those cool sequences somehow but it does get frustrating when
A) it happens all the time B) cut scene me continually does far cooler moves than I can in open gameplay

Anyone else a bit overwhelmed by all the different systems it throws at you? I'm flubbing combat a solid 7/10 times and just resorting to brute force melee/dodging to get through it because I can't get my head around using the L1/R1 ability trees in a seamless enough manner. I'm finding most of them a bit shite to use in the thick of it so far. Especially with there being 2 characters' worth to remember.
Think I might be finally declining with age as I found Spiderman 1 and Miles Morales to be second nature after a while. Maybe I just need a few more hours to get my head around it.

Having two different characters with their own skill tree means a lot to remember. Neither of the either two games had that. I’m struggling a little as well.
But then as ever the same combos work 99% of the time so it doesn’t seem to matter too much.

Yeah it's having no bearing on actually progressing through encounters, but I can't help but feel like I'm missing out a bit on having stylish battles.
My fights look less like the ones you'd see in a Spider-Man film and more like what you'd see between two rival firms on an abandoned industrial estate a couple of miles away from Millwall's ground.

There’s a lot of needless button combos in traversal/story scenes when there is just one option to progress, too.
Press triangle to stick to this, l1+triangle to lower that, l1+r1 to pull that, l2+r2 to squeeze through this… if there’s just one way to move the scene just assign it to a generic ‘interaction’ button.

It didn’t explain the ability wheel in the bottom left very well but when I got it, combat made a lot more sense.
All the button combos it keeps asking you to do in combat are abilities you can unlock and assign. These recharge at different speeds, you can see them tick up individually and are triggered with L1 plus the button for the slot you assigned them to.
They take a different meter from the triangle + circle attack. And your gadget meter.
It’s weirdly over complicated. You really don’t need three resources to manage.

Well this is their third Spiderman game and maybe their following Rocksteady in third Batman game where there were sooooo many button combinations.

Yeah it's using them in a useful manner I'm finding a struggle. A lot of them feel like they could easily have been rolled into one skill too. Do we really need more than 1 AOE electric attack? Then in the rare moments of clarity I do have; the skill I want to use isn't charged because the cooldowns are a bit on the stingy side.
Still, I've got my good old 'Slide under, punch into air, throw back down and ground slam' to fall back on.

You don’t really need to manage anything though, you just use them when they’re available. And you’ll upgrade all the gadgets a lot os you work your way through so everything becomes much more effective.
It is a bit cumbersome at the start but a handful of hours in and they’re all pretty simple to navigate in the thick of combat.

I think things will feel better when I've got most of the skills open and I can curate them a bit more to more own play style. It seems like every button has at least 2 options to choose from.
