Good to see Clarke doing so well. Strange his career never really seemed to take off at club level. He was so highly rated at Chelsea. Loads of people credited him with being the secret ingredient when Mourinho was smashing it there. Similarly at West Ham and Liverpool he was really highly rated. Always expected him to go on and be an excellent manager but somehow never quite happened at club level.

Sounds like Phillips will be starting tonight. I honestly don't think I can watch it, I'll get myself too wound up. Any sane person would be playing Bellingham, Rice and Maddison, but Southgate is so terrified of losing, even with qualification pretty much in the bag.
I used to watch all England games, especially qualifiers. Now I'm losing interest despite all the great players we have. Its actually quite sad.

I just watch England with the knowledge that ultimately they will always disappoint.
Think I should start doing that with Man Utd. It's quite liberating.

It's baffling. Although I did hear a journo describe it that England fans want swashbuckling in qualifying but then a more conservative approach during tournaments.

He’s starting Phillips over Maddison which to be honest is doubly good news as our best player gets a rest and I don’t feel so bad about not watching it.

You’d think he has to be trolling at this point. You'd think. Our best player was Grealish. Called him up and never used him until he went to Man City. Looking at the lineup; Stones hasn't played much due to injury, Maguire doesn't play much, Phillips doesn't play much, Rashford is off form. I'd have played Bowen instead of Rashford. Still, Southgate has ruined England for me with his negative tactics and favourites.

You’ve got Phillips starting with JWP not even in the squad despite smashing it at West Ham. Maddison one of the best players in the league on the bench. Then two centre backs who’ve barely played when you’ve guehi, tomori and dunk available. TAA as a midfielder. Rashford massively out of form. I honestly think he’s lost the plot.
Honestly even Gallagher is a far better option than Phillips.

Dunk has 2 MOM level performances for England back to back.
Maguire doesn't play, and when he does it's a disaster.

In some slight mitigation, Maddison plays as a 10 mostly, yes? (Not watched Spurs mich this season). Bellingham has been brilliant at 10 for RM so another CM makes some degree of sense. Even if Maddison could play there.

Maddison plays more in a 3 at spurs. He could easily play in a midfield 3 with Rice and Bellingham. Which would be really exciting.

Bellingham is just as effective deeper too, and Rice is capable enough of screening the defence. It's just far too adventurous for the boring cunt.
You could even have Maddison playing off the left with Rashford so out of form.
And his continued use of Maguire over Dunk is baffling. He does everything he wants Maguire to do at a higher level while playing for his club and in form.
Southgate can get fucked.

Now the football's on we can get back to the important business of booing Maguire and Hendo.
Phillips nearly taking an early bath there.

Was Southgate always such a big club bias international manager? I feel like he wasn’t but now I can’t tell if its because he’s becoming one or if its because he always picks his favourites and a bunch of them have moved to become squad players and benchwarmers at big clubs. Plus Hendo.

Not watching, was it a maguire special?
I really don’t want us to lose, but I also want Southgate’s crappy decisions to have consequences.
Conflicted.

Southgate is a terrible club manager who somehow fell into international football and gave the FA good vibes. He’s bored his way to quarters, semis and a final with some of the most exciting players England have ever had. Bottles in big games for fun

I’m not sure a two man center defence with the combined football IQ of 100 helps much either.
Doesn’t stones play defensive midfield for Man City?

More joins from CB doesn't he? Much like inverted full backs.

In real time I wasn't sure that was a penalty.
edit: good penalty from Kane, which isn't unexpected really.

Kanealty strikes again
40% of his goals for England have been penalties. Maybe if he scored more in open play England might win something…

To think this team could have had Bellingham and Musiala as starters if Southgate didn't have favourites.
