Possession means fuck all if it's constantly being used on the safe side. Kane needs runners on the flanks and space to be created for him to be useful. We are static as fuck as we want to keep our shape above anything else and Kane will start to drop too deep to get involved.
Spain showed how to use possession tonight. When they pass it back to their defenders or keeper they aren't just doing it to keep the ball safe like us, they are recycling it for their next attacking phase of play. It's night and day how the ball is used between the two.

Just seen we had less XG over the tournament than Croatia, who went out in the group stage. Yikes.

Not sure I agree with the 'Kane was a useless passenger' argument; he scored three goals this tournament. Compare that with England's other forwards. Yet Bellingham, Saka, and especially Foden didn't get as much criticism. I'd argue Bellingham was missing from the quarter final onwards. At least a few times tonight, he should have been busting a gut to get into the box, and I can't really remember him ever doing that. I'm convinced he wasn't really match-fit.

The one good thing even in defeat, is that it doesn't feel like there's a desperate need to win something within a few tournament cycles to avoid 'wasting' a golden generation or whatever. England is clearly now a conveyor belt of elite talent that isn't going to end anytime soon. Even this crop of players are mostly young as fuck.
There might be the odd disappointment here and there but I don't see us disappearing from the conversation for a long time now.

He made hardly any runs, didn't properly compete for headers, misplaced lay offs and was far too easily marked in general. Just not available for a pass and not really taking defenders with him to create space for others because he was barely moving. Even his ability to drop deep and pick passes is a bit moot in this team. We have others who can do that who are already standing there wondering where the strikers gone? He took his penalties well and took the chance against Slovakia when the ball fortuitously came his way. We're not Poland. We've got more effective players on the bench. He shouldn't have been starting games. Maybe if he'd been treated like Shaw and rested we'd have a fit and firing Kane in the final.

It's not like we're the best by any means but we've got as much talent and depth as anyone except France. No right to win a tournament but we've just shown we can get through relying on that individual talent. We're going deep every tournament. It's a great platform.

Agree.
And for that reason, I hope Southgate goes down as a legendary manager. He deserves it for all he has achieved, how he has transformed England, and all the shit he has put up with frankly.

I only woke up for the second half, so we were already one down and I dunno how it went before that. Second half mostly seemed much improved over previous games. They seemed to be actually going for it (Maybe because of being one down) and put together a few decent attacking moves. It's a shame they didn't play like that more often.
Even so, Spain seemed slicker with their passing and movement, and more confident when in control. Although play-acting the fuck out of it. That's what they should use VAR for.. give retrospective yellow/red cards for faking.
The Southgate situation is so weird, he seems to have done an amazing job off the pitch, turning them into a loyal and well behaved squad that seem to have a much better attitude than they used to have. But on the pitch has been so frustrating. The tactics have kinda worked, but if his 85min substitutions work so well, why can't they do that for entire games??

Three lions led by a donkey.
You can't win games by being ultra defensive all the time without a bit of luck and you eventually run out of that.

I see a lot of young attacking mid/wingers. England will have to adapt to playing that way in the future whether Kane retries, and Watkins/Toney going through 30 years old etc.

They might be a more likeable team but they're painfully boring to watch. We didn't dominate a single game and looked more likely to lose in most of the matches than win. I think I'd rather see them fail heroically trying to win the game than watch them keep passing it side to side until they get near the opponent's box then send it all the way back to Pickford.

I actually quite enjoy Ally McCoist. I said this before that he feels genuine in his opinions. Shame he's got abuse by Scottish fans for being passionate about England.

Kane had a crap tournament which seems to be letting other performances slip through.
Apart from the overhead kick Bellingham was pretty useless. Rice was crap especially against the Dutch. Trip was poor Walker in no man's land for both goals last night. Foden had one good game Gallagher just runs about looking busy without actually doing anything.
A lot of it could be down to the system others simply exhausted.
In the end though Spain played the best football all tournament so can't really be surprised they won. At least the French didn't bore themselves into another trophy.

I actually thought Bellingham was ok for most of the tournament. Always looking for the ball and trying to make things happen (albeit not always successfully) plus a decent assist last night.
Agree that Rice, Foden and especially Walker had poor tournaments. Trip did his best out there, I would have actually been ok with him starting at RB over Walker last night.
Saka, Palmer, Mainoo, Guehi, Stones, Konsa all had good tournaments. Toney & Watkins in their (too brief) cameos as well.

Mainoo is an example of a player no one was talking about a year ago. It's hardly like he's the first either. We get one or two like him every year. Again, what is different now is that English academies are developing technically proficient players. Also, Brexit is starting to have an impact on youth development and make it fiscally beneficial for clubs to prioritise home grown talent. Centre forward is certainly an issue but international football is increasingly not that reliant on them anyway.

I thought Rice was excellent in the group games but looked absolutely dead on his feet in the knockouts.

Bellingham looked like he’d just come off the back of playing every minute of an 80 game season. He had his moments but, especially against the teams who dared to sit in, he didn’t look inspired.
Foden when he was good was good (last couple of matches) but largely anonymous for most of the tournament.
I think really though the only real problem positions were the TAA experiment which Southgate fixed with Mainoo, the lack of a left hand side to the squad and Kane’s movement. Partly I think teams had Kane figured out, he wasn’t trying to run in behind them so he was easy to mark out of the game. Partly he looked very tired, which probably contributed to the first issue.
Any other gripes about not putting the lesser established nations to bed early was a question of mentality not personnel for me. Tell those exact same players to go for it (or put them 1-0 down) and you could see they can play, the next guy will just need to let them.
And to be fair to Southgate once Shaw was available and Mainoo was in the side things looked a lot more efficient and effective. Its just in terms of entertainment its a shame that hadn’t happened earlier.
Its not like they bottled the final. Spain won every match they played, using every member of their squad apart from the third choice keeper. They were the top scorers and they beat the defending champions, the hosts, the favourites and teams who’d recently been in finals and semis for the World Cup and Euros. This wasn’t slumping out early doors like the 00s Golden Generation used to do.

Think Saka was England's best player by a long way, consistently good performances and he just keeps on going. He really does need to put his feet up for a while before the season starts.

I thought Rice was excellent in the group games but looked absolutely dead on his feet in the knockouts. I was about to post same thing. He was one of our better players in the group games and even in the knockouts he still made vital interceptions and tackles in every game. We would have exited earlier without him. I've never seen him look as tired as he did in the Holland game. Southgate's system demanded so much of him as the sole holding midfielder trying to cover lots of spaces and often dropping into the back line to cover when Walker/Trippier went awol. I just think the fatigue caught up with him. We need another DM to come through who can sub with him or allow him to play higher up in certain games.

Arteta will be starting him on August 17th. He really shouldn't, but he will, because we aren't realistically going to sign and have a replacement ready within a month. Best start to make peace with that.

Our shitty form at the end of last season has meant we've had a lot of players getting a full pre season, or at least have not played much at the tournament. The biggest issues are Romero, Lo Celso and Bentancur, but we should be well covered to allow them time to rest.

About 30 seconds before Cucurella bombed down the wing and crossed a perfectly weighted ball in for the winner, I was telling my son how bad Cucurella was, how he can't defend, how all he can do is make headless chicken runs down the wing with no end product, and I couldn't believe he was Spain's first choice left-back. I think now my son will not listen to a word I say about football.
Anyway, on the final and tournament as a whole, no complaints whatsoever, but still can't help to be gutted. I was hoping that my son's first real experience of a major tournament for England (he's 11 and didn't really get into Euro 2020 or the WC) wouldn't end in the kind of crushing disappointment I've had my whole life (first memory I have is Italia 90), but here we go. Having said that, we had our first father and son screaming and hugging / jumping around the living room moments with the Watkins and Palmer goals, so I hope he'll remember those seconds forever.
