Southgate is a legend. He made an England team I used to despise likable again. He's a first class bloke.
But first class blokes aren't always the best football managers. He's always felt like a bit of a caretaker. If there was a Head of Vibes job in football I'd have him there forever. But eventually you need a tactician in there who has their finger on the pulse to kick things on, on the field.

Kane’s done. He’s been well off his mark. At club level it can be useful to have a talisman but not at this level.

Kane's been poor but he's literally just had a record breaking season in a top league. Surely he's just carrying something or not fully fit. I don't buy that he's done now.

Feel like Gareth needs to win something for his own mental health. Wonder if he will be tempted to have a pop at the world cup and then call it a day.

Weirdly, someone's just let off fireworks around here. Waste not want not, I guess. Maybe they're Spanish?
Or readers of The National.

Those calling for Southgate to go: who would you like to replace him? I think Gareth's man management plays a big role in how the team plays. You may get better tactics at the cost of team spirit.

It's not coming home, it's going to Rome. It doesn't like rain, it's going to Spain.

I really hope for all our sakes that a new manager can come in and do what we are expecting with this crop of players, but I think there's going to be a bit of a rude awakening when that time comes.

I know England’s football stunk for a lot of this tournament but Southgate really needs to be remembered as the manager who made England likeable for the first time in about 20 years.
Two finals, a semi, so many amazing players brought through and there’s a real foundation when you look at what he’s leaving behind.
And he seems like he’s a stand up, solid guy.

I’ll take second place. That’s like 15 places better than Portugal.

Kane was so bad that it was weird. Great from the penalty spot but outside of that pretty much the worst tournament I can remember from a starting England striker. He really shouldn't have been playing after that second group game confirmed the first wasn't just circumstantial.
I'm not against him playing for England again if he can recover fitness and form. The fact he played when clearly short of both was a major issue. If he's up for going on Giroud style then great, but he shouldn't be an automatic pick anymore.

Offer him all the money.

Yeah would love to see Klopp. And if that doesn't work, then back to Gareth.

Kane doesn't work in this awful low block system especially when the players either side and in the middle are on the half way line.
I feel a bit bad for Kane because I'm not sure what else he can do when his game isn't stretching defenses.

For me we also need to stop making strikers captain. Makes far more sense for it to be a CB or CM as you generally aren't going to drop your captain.

Klopp would be amazing with this group. But a German managing England? I just don’t see it. Poch would be a decent shout too, but again nationality is an issue.

Kane, especially at this point in his career, doesn't work in a team looking to take few risks and nick a goal and go through to the next stage of a tournament by any means necessary. If he joined City he'd score at least 30 goals next season, he'll probably do the same at Bayern.
If you'd swapped teams for him and Morata today he'd have at the very least had an assist.

We had the same issue with Shearer towards the end. Though I don't think he was ever quite so easily marked as Kane in this tournament, I do remember being desperate for a striker with pace and movement.

The big difference now compared to any time before, is that we are not technically inferior to any nation. Our footballers can play one touch, front foot, pressing and possession football with the very best.
We need a manager that knows how to actually do that. We've never had one, and Southgate is a product of his experiences. Great leader but not a great tactician.

If they want a manager who has teams who can press and work from the front then Howe does that when he has a fit first choice team at Newcastle. Potter had some good ideas before Chelsea ruined him too

Both Howe and Potter would be good options. I don't really care what nationality they are though. Just the best person for the job.

I feel that they always look uncomfortable when receiving the ball under pressure, whereas you don't see that with Spain or Germany.
