I've just had a cig break at work outside and I was thinking of the ss2 interface and I remembered the fact that when you pick an item up you then press the mouse wheel button which brings up the inventory, then drop the item in. It's such a good mechanic. I wish all games had that.
Small point but really helps with the ui so you can do things really fast

Agreed - it's great that we can talk about these games in the present tense, all thanks to Nightdive's stellar work. Now buy (or lease) the Thief and Deus Ex IPs from those Embracer douchebags, Nightdive!

Yeah I'd be well up for a thief remake. Love the first one.
Still plays OK on pc, but it occasionally crashes iirc

I always turn the music off in SS2. Rave music doesn't really work with it for me
Of those 2 screenshots posted, I think SS2 looks better. Just more natural and spooky. I have a lot of affection for the dark engine anyway because of Thief

Must be just me then, but even though SS2 is one of my all-time-favorite games I think it looks a bit shit, whereas system shock remake looks amazing.
Graphics aren't everything of course. But they can also do a lot to enhance the atmosphere.
I don't play on console, and I already own it on PC and know how to mod it, so the upcoming Enhanced edition isn't all that exciting.

I think SS2 has quite a strong Star Trek look to it. The SS remake (haven't played it) looks a lot more stylised and cyberpunk to me I'm not fussed about the graphics looking dated though- they remind me of a particular time in gaming and I think it looks great still
My brain doesn't see ropey old graphics, it just sees System Shock 2

That last sentence sums it up perfectly I think.

I'm with you in how it looks better in a way, totally get that. It's just like wunty says, ss2 is absolutely sacred in my brain and I just can't accept it any other way!

I love the low-polygon look of the maps in SS2. Those angular environments really sell the visual design. That said, I've always thought enemies looked a bit crappy.
That and the game really needs to be somewhat rebalanced. As it stands, Marine is easy mode, Navy is medium, and Psi is hard. Too many of the high-tier weapons required massive amounts of skill points just to wield, and then were more or less useless. Same for too many of the stats, skills and perks. Even a first time player could tell which skills/perks were merely a waste of cyber modules.
i also want to point out, the SS1 remake works because it modernizes the look of the original SS1 while staying somewhat true to it (and even then, I think the original looks and plays better in several ways). They couldn't just use the same look for SS2.

I was delighted to find the severed head for which I'd been looking - a horrifying sentence, in any other context - and jettisoned Beta Grove into the inky blackness of space.
Turns out you don't need to (and, indeed, can't) jettison Alpha and Delta Groves, so the next 20 minutes or so was time wasted.
The game is determined to make me complete Storage, as it turns out there's some C-4 on said level, which I'll need to use shortly. Great! Flying robot assholes, here I come.

SS2 is like this weird retro look at sci-fi but not in a retrofuturist kind of way. It's got this really unique vibe that I just see being replicated in any way. Partly because of how "shit" it looks. It's hard to describe without just repeating the same thing over again but for me SS2 has to look like that. It's the same if they ever got hold of Thief 1 or 2. I wouldn't want them changed either. The dated aspects of the engine add to the surrealness and the unease I get whilst playing. There's a reason retro-styled poly horror is in vogue just now. It unsettles you more purely because of how strange it looks.

The wobbly guards and way they move slowly and flip around when they're searching for you feels like such a part of the atmosphere of the game. You would absolutely lose that by updating the graphics. Same with all their little grumbles if they redid the sound

I can go over the same old ground too, but at the end of the day, you *need* it to look like it is, so you can say, "ah right, im in System shock 2 world, I see" as you play it. I agree with you, a remake or a remaster just wouldn't be able to capture the magic the original has.

I'm just playing devil's advocate, and I can tell you that even though I'm drunk and it's late, I am absolutely starting a new character tonight!

I agree with you, a remake or a remaster just wouldn't be able to capture the magic the original has. That applies to a lot of older games. There's usually an emotional attachment to them that means rather than looking dated, the visuals transport you fully back into that experience
I'm sure it's different if it's something you never played previously. But even then, like I said before, older graphics tend to remind of me an era of gaming so I can usually still appreciate old games as they are even if I didn't play them first time around

Absolutely, it's like a time slice of gaming. You just wouldn't want it any different.
I think that is one of the untold beauties of this game if you've played the original, and Newcomers will probably be put off hence the remake demands, which I can understand too, but since I played it originally, I need that og experience.
Nostalgia, it seems, is real after all.

I got hold of the explosives, then opted to keep exploring Storage; after getting the security level down to about 2%, which presumably equates to one measly camera, I got fed up with the respawning drones and bailed.
Now I'm in Engineering.

I asked Phoebe how she'd describe the Engineering area in System Shock. "Ruff!" she replied helpfully.
I'm sorry - that was terrible.
(It's a hard level, is the point I'm trying to get across.)

Engineering is a bit of a difficulty jump. It helps to have your shield up almost all the time.

Pretty sure you should have a Shield implant by now. It can be activated and will absorb some damage, but uses up energy while it's active. I seem to remember there are a number of energy recharge points in Engineering, so it can be quite convenient to have, especially in those cramped corridors.

All four antennae are now smouldering ruins.
It's self-destruct time! (Quaddy, I'm assuming this is where the CPU terminal numbers come into play?)

You’ve pretty much caught up with me. I finally grabbed a bit of time on it last night though so I’ve just got said numbers and made my way to the reactor. You’ll need plenty of environmental protection down there Uly. Sadly my session was cut short as it crashed and I couldn’t be bothered to fire it back up again.

But yes. Terminal numbers from levels 1-6 are needed. You might need to refer to a guide to remember where they all are.

Yeah that's where you need the numbers. Like wunty says though, I can't remember the order. Just quick save beforehand and get lucky
