Not a single win for The Banshees of Inisherin, felt a bit bad for those behind it. Wonderful film.

It’s that time again.
In the best film category, I’ve seen eight of the ten nominees (Oppenheimer & Maestro the omissions) I really hope there’s some recognition for The Holdovers & Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone in particular. Zone of Interest was incredibly well made too. The best actress award could go four ways for me; very strong year. Nolan will probably win Director but I find him difficult to love It’s not fair on Cillian Murphy, but hope Paul Giamatti wins best actor. That’s it for now.

I think this is probably one of the most predictable Oscars for a while, everything seems to be coming up Nolan. With that in mind, my predictions:
Film: Oppenheimer Dir: Nolan Actor: Murphy Actress: Gladstone (I'm 60/40 on Gladstone vs Stone but I think Gladstone has the narrative behind her) S/Actor: Downey S/Actress: Randolph O/Screenplay: The Holdovers A/Screenplay: American Fiction Animated: The Boy and the Heron
Of the Best Picture nominees I've seen, Oppenheimer was by far my favourite, but then it is my sort of film (historical, auteur-driven, slightly trippy filmmaking techniques, has an Irishman in it).

I've not seen quite a few of the best picture noms, missing American Fiction, Anatomy of A Fall, The Holdovers, Maestro and The Zone of Interest. Of those, Anatomy of a Fall and Zone of Interest seem to be the critics' favourites, but I wouldn't expect either to actually win. I suspect it will be Oppenheimer, which I would be fine with (although I would probably go with Poor Things, myself).

Yeah, there are loads that I want to see, but hardly any aside from KotFM and Oppenheimer that I've actually gotten around to watching.
Gladstone seems like a sure thing. Aside from her being utterly fucking phenomenal, it just feels like a Oscar bait kind of role.

If Oppenheimer wins it'll be the first time a movie in that years top ten box office has won since 2003. I'm sure if so it'll be an aberration. It's just Nolan's time, like it was Spielberg's time when he did his biopic.

A night of few surprises- Oppenheimer swept it. I watched it last night and it deserves the praise. I’ll watch again to get more familiar with some of the characters who seem to blow through, say their piece and then reappear later. I thought Downey Jr and Murphy were absolutely excellent. It wasn’t to be for Lily Gladstone, but Emma Stone deserved it. Glad I didn’t have to choose
Finally glad to see Zone of Interest recognised as best international film. Richly deserved.
Wonder what will be there next year.

My big takeaway from the night is that if Blunt and Gosling can maintain that chemistry and comedy then The Fall Guy might be one of the best films of the year.

Having just watched Poor Things this weekend, I have to say it richly deserves the awards it got, but I feel a bit sorry that Barbie had to come out in the same year as it would have been a shoe in for Production Design otherwise. You’re probably not going to see two films as perfectly crafted visually.

Meh. I thought Oppie was mind-numbingly dull and, aside from Cillian Murphy, the characters were cardboard cutouts of scientists. Zone of Interest should've won Best Picture.

I don't agree but even so the scientists for the most part don't represent the main characters - they are largely an ensemble to give a sense of how things worked at Los Alamos. The other main characters are, among others, Kitty Oppenheimer, Jean Tatlock, Lewis Strauss and Leslie Groves. They are at least engaging and in some cases complex and richly drawn.
I thought it was the most exciting film I saw all last year. Its success last night is hugely gratifying and its bonkers box office a reaffirmation for cinema after being in the doldrums.

Yeah, I thought Downey's performance was possibly better than Murphy's - if only because I wasn't expecting that from him. It's an interesting character arc, and he plays into it really well. Possibly my favourite thing about the movie, actually, looking back on my one watch at the BFI IMAX (which I bunked off work to see on the very last showing :-D ).

Godzilla Minus One got the visual effects Oscar. Such a great film.

What they achieved with Godzilla Minus One on a very small budget was very impressive, a deserved win.
On the whole I'm pretty happy with the awards, not surprised in Oppenheimer winning the big ticket ones but glad to see Poor Things winning a handful that were very deserved too. I know Lily Gladstone was the expected winner of Best Actress but Emma Stone as Bella was just fantastic she put it all out there (literally) in her performance.
The "I'm Just Ken" performance deserved an award of some sort as it was perfect.
Jimmy Kimmel was okay, the RDJ stuff at the start was really ill thought out and he didn't adapt when it was clearly dying, the Truth social post was real though, Trump really fucking hates him, so that's fun.

That’s straight up one of the best Oscar moments ever. I thought it was hilarious.
Great to see Zone of Interest, American Fiction and Anatomy of a Fall getting wins. The Iron Claw not getting any nominations is a travesty.
Edit: I really didn’t like Poor Things though.

Biggest miss for me was no nominations for the superb All of Us Strangers. Seems it has been snubbed by most awards shows, with even Bafta justing going for a Best British Film nom and not in the Best Film category. Thought that was a beautiful film, possibly my favourite of the year.
