EEAAO seems to be getting nominated for everything... everywhere all at once.

Think the noms do show that it hasn't been a top year for films. I've seen 5 of the Best Pics (Avatar, Banshees, Elvis, Everything, Top Gun) and would go with either Everything or Elvis. Everything mostly because it was so unique, even though I would say it was still flawed and could have done with some editing down. Elvis was a pleasant surprise after not being so sure about it from the trailer. I hope Austin Butler gets the actor award, as he was perfect as The King.
I know lots of people love Banshees and I certainly didn't hate it, but it didn't particularly effect me in the way it seems to have done for others. McDonagh just doesn't do it for me. His characters are always absolutely repugnant, so I can end up appreciating some of the things he is doing, but can't get emotionally engaged. Banshees was probably the closest to work for me, but I was still more admiring it rather than loving it.
Not really sure why Avatar is there. Top Gun was fun and deserves a place, but it was special because of the climate it was released in rather than the quality of the film itself.

You don't like In Bruges? It's a masterpiece.

Watched it a long time ago and can't really remember much about it. As best as I can remember, I recall liking it, but, again, not loving it.
It is a film I've been meaning to revisit.

The funny thing for me was that EEEAAO was floated to Sky some time ago as a potential acquisition for Sky Cinema where it would have been presented as a Sky Original. However the Director of Content turned it down as he “didn’t get it”. Instead, he went with After Yang. A good film. But a goose egg for award noms.
Forget piracy. The thing that will bury Sky is a failure to grasp what will actually add value for customers.

It's a dying monopoly from a different era. I wouldn't be surprised if sports and aging long-term subscribers are the only thing keeping it alive.

Very surprised to see EEAAO getting so many nominations. Haven't seen it yet as it hasn't even been released over here, but it sounds very much my thing. It didn't sound like mainstream or oscar's thing though.
Short Round being favorite for an oscar in his comeback role after about 30 years being retired due to being unable to get roles is pretty cool. It's almost like a movie...

Agree it's not a great list of nominations. But then the cinema industry hasn't really fully recovered from the pandemic imo. It's telling that things like Odeon Limitless have been available dirt cheap for a few years as the chains are desperate for filmgoers.
I hope Banshees does well and perhaps All Quiet. Everything Everywhere was a hot ambitious mess, so glad it's been recognised, but again I don't think any are classics.

Him and Ke Huy Quan having a renaissance together and forming this brotherly relationship has been genuinely moving.

If it were up to me RRR would be nominated for Best Picture and win it. Best movie I watched last year. But then it was nominated for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu which means it's gonna be performed at the ceremony and thats OK too.

How on earth did Avatar get a best picture nomination? A cynic would suggest that it's to get its loyal fanbase to watch the ceremony.

It also means there is a real possibility we could see someone die at this years ceremony

We not doing predictions then? Okay, I'll go first. These are what I think will win, not who I'm personally rooting for. Not doing every category ;-)
Picture: Everything Everywhere Director: Spielberg Actor: Fraser Actress: Blanchett Sup-Actor: Quan Sup-Actress: Bassett Orig-Screenplay: Everything Everywhere Adap-Screenplay: Women Talking Animation: GDT's Pinocchio FX: Top Gun Maverick

Must be the effects used to make Cruise look taller than 4 foot.

I thought Maverick didn't have any FX because it was all real?!!? :-( I'm REALLY looking forward to how the "IT WAS ALL REAL" PR for the film squares up against the "For your consideration" VFX Oscar reel ;-) For the record, most of the footage of planes in flight was digitally altered in some way, eg. only Tom Cruise actually flew jets himself, so the other actors' had their pilots digitally removed. The way Maverick was hyped as "real" really does my head in, because it's already increadibly impressive that they flew real jets in the sky and got some stunning footage. But I think the way the minimised the contribution of dozens if not hundreds of VFX artists is really low, and it happens on almost every major film.

I hope Everything Everywhere All At Once wins stuff, as it's weird but mainly because it's the only one I bothered to see this year. Though All Quiet on the Western Front and Tar are on the list.
