Someone mentioned Top Secret being one of their all time favourite films on here. Thankfully they weren't talking about the top Google result with Bill Cosby's mug on it... I'm definitely in the same boat when it comes to just not listening to certain music or watching films with specific actors after they're revealed as wronguns, but this feels one step removed from that. It's closer to refusing to watch a QT film because of Weinstein. Who thinks about Harvey Weinstein when they watch a film? Who cares about anything he has to say? He's widely disgraced
I don't think these comparisons people are making are very helpful as it's a very specific case wth HP and JKR. It's different when the author/creator (which Weinsten isn't) is already discredited or irrelevant. JKR is still the popular and hugely successful author of Harry Potter and she is leveraging that popularity
I think also the JKR and HP case is quite different to many others when it comes to the argument of separating art from the artist, as she is so connected with HP. The story of HP becoming such a success is also entwined with the success of JKR. Prior to her Twitter rants, she was held up (rightly or wrongly) as a figure to be greatly admired. It was generally held by many that she came from nothing to being one of the most important voices in culture. People saw her as incredibly shrewd when it came to maintaining artistic control over the franchise and for striking a deal that saw her profit massively from everything associated with it. Few people who had heard of Harry Potter hadn't also heard of JK Rowling and most saw her as an inspiring figure, even if they didn't have much interest in her actual creation. |

Never gotten into HP, not a big fantasy fan, I can just barely restrain myself from making fun of lotr. But one thing always struck me about HP, the spells sound like absolute shit. It’s always this vaguely Italian sounding version of an english word. I mean Revelio? What kind of zero effort shit is that?
Anyway, no horse in this race, but when I see people getting pissy at Digital Foundry of all places for maybe doing a technical review of a game that is based on IP written by someone that posts transphobic tweets, well that’s so many steps removed that I come back to what I’ve been thinking from the start, learn to pick your fights.

Yeah, it is helpful all round. Like what has been discussed. The thing is to just do what you think is for the best.
For me personally, I don't think boycotting this game would do much in changing what JKR believes in. Even if it flopped hard, lets say only sold a 100k copies, do you think it will get her to stop or change her beliefs? Probably not, she is still incredibly wealthy and influential.
Maybe the next game gets cancelled, HP stops selling so many books and films. She is still going to be incredibly wealthy and influential. She may change her stance because she has unpopular beliefs but on the other hand her beliefs are popular with right-wing Christian faithful. She is very, very unlikely to change her opinion. Multi-millionaire, can't catch me attitude seems to be her thang.

It's probably because so many people were such big JKR fanpeople they feel so strongly in this instance.
I always really enjoyed the wizarding world, knowing the writing was pretty shit. Fuk me if some of the later books don't just last forever, but I still wanted to drink in the world. I never got much into/behind JKR, as I have never really idolised people in any field.
Now when I think of Harry Potter, it's the wider backdrop, the music, the artistry and the main cast that present the world to me. It's Alan Rickman, Daniel Radcliffe, etc. The amazing craft and art that went into the set and prop production is so clear from visiting the HP studios in North London. Such huge skill and love created that world. None of that is JKR. She can get wrekt and I won't let her spoil my enjoyment.

I found an archway the other night, which when I walked through a giant hedge maze spouted up from the ground. I have always loved hedge mazes so I found that a particular delight. I am easily pleased.
