Definitely Lost Prophets is the one for me that I couldn't listen to again. Other stuff like any JKR stuff, zero interest anyway. Never really liked Spacey, definitely wasn't surprised he was a creep. Same for Philip Scofield, clear creep. Thought IT Crowd was decent, but fucking hate laughing tracks.

... the later books were overlong shite full of deus ex machinas... Tbf, the books were full of Deus Ex Machinas from book one onward. Is there a book in the series that doesn't rely on one for it's ending?
That said, I mostly like the books and think some of the criticisms of them are a bit overdone. I'm quite happy to criticise the writer though. And fantastic beasts which was shite.

I deleted twitter, which I barely used, over Musk took over.
Facebook account is inactive, though that's more because it was an inane waste of time.
I do use WhatsApp though so maybe I have no leg to stand on.

Acknowledging we’re all hypocrites on this and every other moral issue goes without saying in these types of discussion. You can’t care about everything and you certainly can’t be aware of everything. Pointing out that hypocrisy is not a coup de grâce, it’s Year 8 debate club.
Similarly pointing out that as individuals there’s very little you can do and using that as an excuse to do nothing is pretty weak sauce.

Someone mentioned Top Secret being one of their all time favourite films on here. Thankfully they weren't talking about the top Google result with Bill Cosby's mug on it...
I'm definitely in the same boat when it comes to just not listening to certain music or watching films with specific actors after they're revealed as wronguns, but this feels one step removed from that. It's closer to refusing to watch a QT film because of Weinstein.

It's a moot point because it's dwelling on an alternate reality, but I do wonder if either glinner or rowling would have become such entrenched terfs without twitter being there to facilitate and fuel their views.
The algorithm of most interacted tweets becoming promoted to other users, coupled with the human bias of wanting to interact with more incendiary posts than benign ones, kind of ensures that these issues become a constant on there, and drags in people who otherwise had no view and forces them to pick a side.

Would I ever want to meet her? Fuck no. Did I enjoy the films? 3 mainly and not read the books and have no desire to now. I think she's past the point of being able to apologise without everyone calling bollocks on it. But if I boycott this game it won't hurt her in the slightest. She already got the big paycheck off WB when she sold all the rights(before her comments?) And she's played no part in this. Do I then as others have said go and boycott twitter and Facebook, did I skip last years WC? No. Should I stop watching football all together because of all the blood money by countries with a much more extreme way of dealing with this stuff than comments on twitter. Re: boycotting, I think (it's been fast-moving) general consensus in the thread has been that this is a matter for the individual, which seems sensible to me. No one is forcing or judging. Someone mentioned Kevin Spacey which I thought was a good example. I'm not avoiding his stuff on principle, I just struggle to stomach the idea of rewatching something like American Beauty, which I also loved. That said, I watched Glengarry again the other day and /that scene/ with him and Al Pacino was even more gratifying. Nothing like this but I think it was something to do with really bad crunch and poor pay. |

I don't think these comparisons people are making are very helpful as it's a very specific case wth HP and JKR. It's different when the author/creator (which Weinsten isn't) is already discredited or irrelevant. JKR is still the popular and hugely successful author of Harry Potter and she is leveraging that popularity

And as annoying as some are finding the discourse around this, It cuts quite close to the bone for some people.
Just this week a trans person was stabbed to death and you can probably draw a pretty straight line between that and some of the hideous rhetoric swirling around.
A lot of it is ‘allies’ looking for pats on the head but a good chunk is from people wondering if it’s going to be them next so, yes, cry more.

I think in a situation like this, talking about it helps and the only way we - as living creatures - make decisions is to draw on experience and similar/specific examples within that experience. Part of what's going on in here is us all processing this out loud and trying to see where we all stand with it. It's actually quite interesting and enlightening discourse. |
