Disagree, most games increase difficulty by increasing enemy health and reducing player damage resistance, that doesn't mean it will increase player skill. Halo is a series that shows how increasing difficulty can improve the experience, Halo Infinite did not do that however.

Yeah I agree with Jambo, hitting something an extra 10 times doesn't make an experience more fun for me.

Medium is where it's at yo. I find it's always the best balanced experience.
Unless it's a stealth game, in which case I go hard or go home.

Aye, always start on medium and will happily drop to easy if needs be. I want to play the game, not stare at a game over screen every few minutes.

I play at normal, or even just play on easier modes. Personally I can't be doing with hard games these days, I want to escape from stress and anxiety not create more.
If I end up dying at the same point more than, say, 3 or 4 times I'll probably drop the difficulty. And if that isn't possible I'll likely just stop playing.

Depends on the game. Still too proud good to play anything on easy though
I enjoyed Halo Infinite more once I bumped the difficulty up

Yeah Halo is an outlier though as thought goes into hard difficulty and not just making bullet sponges.

Surprises me the Goldeneye/Perfect Dark method of increasing difficulty didn't catch on more. Yeah I was actually discussing this very fact with a mate the other day ago after he was talking about GoldenEye on the Xbox. It was a really clever way of increasing the challenge. Crysis took some inspiration from it by increasing the enemy AI and changing their spoken to language to Korean which was an inspired touch.

Same here, although it's definitely pride (as opposed to talent!) in my case.
Towards the end of The Phantom Pain, during my first playthrough, I used the chicken hat for one particular mission after dying umpteen times. Really regretted it. When I played through the game again, I forced myself to get through that same mission without turning to poultry-themed headwear.
No judgement whatsoever for anyone who plays games on easy, in case that wasn't clear! To each their own.

Better to have Normal, Hard and Hardest. Disguise Easy as Normal to spare our insecurities!

Probably one for a new thread, but what's the hardest part of any game you've played to date (without lowering the difficulty)? Mine was the Nergigante fight in Monster Hunter: World.

I was close to getting the new Dead Space earlier but I'm quite genuinely concerned I'll be too scared to play it

Either Sword Saint Ishiin in Sekiro, the 'I Wanna Be The Guy' bonus stage in Super Meat Boy, Wizpig in Diddy Kong Racing or Alma in Ninja Gaiden on Hard Mode. Probably a ton of 8-Bit games I've forgot.

Better to have Normal, Hard and Hardest. Disguise Easy as Normal to spare our insecurities! But we need a lowest level to not play and be better than. I suggest just 'Really Quite Hard Actually', and 'Fucking Nails, You're Ace', but they're both actually easy.

I go with normal mostly nowadays. I don't mind a challenge, but I don't want to be repeating the same sections over and over again (says the person who would play anything by From Software above all else - I'm a man of many contradictions). If a game has 4 difficulties I normally go with the third one, but may drop it to the second.
Recently played the new Mario + Rabbids that was perhaps a little too easy on its normal, as I failed once and restarted a battle maybe 4 times. Still, I don't think I could have enjoyed the game as much if I was needing to restart every other battle. It actually became quite a fun challenge to try to see how to complete a battle in one turn when it seemed possible.
Edit - hardest bit of a recent game I would go with Maleania in Elden Ring. First stage wasn't too bad, but the second stage I found impossible. Might have also been not helped by me realising very late that my standard sword and no armour for Souls like wasn't really the right approach for Elden Ring. The back half of the game felt really, really hard without some magic.
Also, Demon of Hatred in Sekiro, although that I feel was just a boss that didn't belong in the game. It's a very different fight to everything else.

The Red Weapon in FFVII. It was actually fairly easy once you'd spent 4000 hours levelling materia, the hard bit was watching mastered, mimed Knights of the Round Table go off for about 11 hours.

The worst higher difficulty offenders for me are ones that involve randomness that you don't have any control over, usually in turn based games - the newer Fire Emblems for example. In that case, you're just restarting over and over hoping for a good run. You're not even accomplishing anything by beating it, it's just persistence

Hardest parts for me were probably most of my first run of Sekiro as it just refused to click. Once it did it was fine, but until then... Horrific.
Veni Vidi Vici (Doing Things the Hard Way) in VVVVVV was one of the most difficult things I've ever played. I just remember sitting there for hours until I'd got the muscle memory down to do it.
Killzone 2, the last part. That was fucking grim. The courtroom in Wolfenstein: TNC was also quite hardcore.

I very rarely lower a difficulty level and generally only do it when it stops being fun. Usually, if Im enjoying it, I will pig-headedly hammer away at something until I get good. The only thing I can think of recently that broke me was GOW2 purely because they made being made out of paper the challenge. I could have powered through but it just was not a good experience. The harder difficulty levels were absolutely woeful and I completed NG+ on the first one at a higher level.

Honestly, as soon as I realised that you could just rapidly tap the block button to reduce the enemies stamina and not worry about timing it became one of the easier From Software games. I struggled a bit with Isshin, Corrupted Monk, Owl Father and, as already mentioned, Demon of Hatred, but outside of those I didn't think it was too tricky once it clicked.

If you can go in and defeat an enemy in just a few hits before they even have a chance to kill you, then whats the point. I dont want to go up against an oversized troll only for it to feel like its hitting me with a feather duster.
