Sigh. If you've just joined us we're talking about... I've actually no fucking idea. I tell you what we're not talking about though, and that's what the new Harry Potter game is like.

Its not like people aren't discussing the game it's just not that many are playing it yet and have had the chance to get stuck into it.

Is there much to actually talk about if you’re not a HP fan though? By all accounts without loving the IP it’s a nice looking but generic open world game. I doubt anyone here is going to get into the intricacies of whether the Slytherin family tree is properly represented or how many Fantastic Beasts are available.

As it’s set 150 years (or so) before the HP stuff it works better than just being in service to that part of the universe. If you are a fan, it has all locations and spells and beasts to get excited about, and you can pick your house and customise your wand and choose your broom. If you aren’t, it’s just a really well realised world that is really consistent within itself. The magic elements work in displaying cool spells and effects, etc, and they help make it visually really appealing when you find new locations or open doors (they have some really cool door opening stuff). It is effectively Dragon Age: Bully, and it’s pretty cool.
But if you really dislike the HP fiction, I doubt you’d be able or want to see past it to the game underneath, which is a pretty standard but very well made open world RPG.

DerblingtonThat's all very interesting, but I feel that you've missed a key point that we haven't discussed at all so far. What about that Rowling, eh?

The Room of Requirement conjuring stuff is really well implemented and intuitive, considering it’s a whole different unique mechanic. Fully customisable room to layout all your potion stations and everything, so that you can grow your own ingredients and mix potions, you can place furniture, and decorate the walls, as well as change the style of the floor and walls and change the entire atmosphere with lighting options. It’s a micro-scale Harry Potter Animal Crossing and it’s seamless. Not something I care about doing more than the bare minimum for but it;s really well designed.
And that applies to the whole game really. Other than some performance issues (none than I’m encountering on PS5 so far), it’s just really well built and polished, and contains a lot of stuff. Easy 8/10, and totally justified 10/10 for the Potter nerds.

I bet Wunty likes the prequels. Is that the Star Wars prequels (awful) or the HP prequels - fantastics beasts etc (also awful)?

The first fantastic beasts is great. The others are not. That's fair. Having seen a big of gameplay I can see this being very successful. Just very very surprised it isn't online with lots of microtransactions.

Can you get expelled? Do you have much dialogue choice?
Hopefully I can join Hufflepuff and become the first decent wizard to come out of that shit house.

Nah I don’t think so. Dialogue choices consist of super polite or snarky and mean. I’d be surprised if it makes any difference.

My copy finished downloading last night at abut 11:30pm (thanks slow internet!), so I got about an hour in before bed.
The initial hour left a very good impression though. Its very well directed, with decent characters (excluding the generic character you play) and some very nice looking environments. Itching to get back into it this evening.
I've started on hard mode. Games are always better when you have to use some actual skill during battles.
