Thought I'd see if there was any fellow comic readers here and if there was any interest in a discussion thread. I'm not reading too much current stuff at the moment but am trying to get back into it. My main focus these days has shifted from TPB collection to Omnibus' after buying the first Ultimate Spider-Man volume last year as a special one off because it was my favourite series then immediately getting hooked 😆 This is my current collection: Also got a load more that I ordered over Christmas which I may add to the thread later.

Awesome collection, makes me think of my own still in storage. On an aside just went into a comics store I always used to go into when I lived in England and my god 3/4 of it is just merch, manga and funko dolls with the tiniest shelf space for actual graphic novels and comics. I get why it's like this now but Christ, it's depressing.

Yeah it's sad I barely buy anything in comic stores anymore, it's either all merch or the prices are so much higher than online that I can't justify it.

I tend to mostly gravitate with older 70s/80 comics that I grew up with (Eagle, 2000AD stuff mainly). Not looked at anything more mainstream for a good while, The Boys/Walking Dead been ng the last ones that I read (bought digitally to my shame).. Not got much of a collection though. Semi-tempted hy the Strontium Dog Ultimate digital bundle but a tad pricy.

I’m big on the current Rebellion reprints of British comics at the moment too.
Most of my superhero stuff is either stored at my parents or was donated to my wife’s work when we moved house.
I’m so behind on what new stuff is good so I’m open to recommendations. Along with the reprints its been newer 2000ad stuff like Brink thats been the only recent titles I’ve followed.

I'm trying to branch out into more indie stuff at the moment as it's been pretty neglected in my collection for years. Got the 3 Saga deluxe editions arriving this week then I expect to order Ice Cream Man and Once & Forever at some point.

One thing I really need to look for again is a replacement for 30 Days of Night. I lent it to a former colleague and never got it back and its since been republished with a new, worse, cover. Mine was one of these and its so much better than what they used for the newer editions.

I have the main arc for Hellboy, some Elephantmen, and a huge DC collection that was a part work from a slightly shady mail order company (Eaglemoss). That one is superb but I had to cancel as it just never ended - they're hardbacks and very heavy and hard to store in that volume. Have 90+ of those plus another shelf of giant specials including all the Crisis stuff and Green Lantern Sinestro Corps. I've probably read about 8 books from this lol.

I’ve got a pretty decent collection of late 80s and early 90s Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman including all of Miracleman, Watchmen, Sandman, plus full runs of most of the golden era Vertigo comics - Preacher, Y the Last Man, Fables etc.
I kind of stopped collecting actual comics years ago and now just use Comixology, although not much interests me these days.

Yup love them, most in storage until we sort the house out.
My all time favorites being
Preacher Y the last man Saga Watchmen
Snyder's batman run aswell was great!
Need to look up what's worth picking up in last 5 years or so as out the loop a bit.

Need to look up what's worth picking up in last 5 years or so as out the loop a bit. I just ordered vol.1 of Batman by Snyder omnibus today. I read some of the as they were coming out and enjoyed it but I was struggling with not liking the Nu52 universe as a whole at the time so didn't stick with it. I dropped off comics for years after that until a few years ago when I dragged my collection back out of storage.

I tried comixology and all that jazz but the the truth of it is that I just love the feel of having the book in my hand and I feel more invested in what I'm reading if that makes any sense to anyone.
Anyway managed to find a Marvel select of Ennis' Punisher run which I've always thought was amazing and had to order online Vol 1 of his collection which should be with me before I fly off on Thursday.

Switched to digital comics because I ran out of space and they were cheaper but it just wasn't the same. I completely switched to Kindle years ago for regular books but couldn't do the same thing for comics.

The best thing in my comic collection is a complete run of 2000AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine, all 2300+ progs and 400+ issues. I say best thing, but they're currently up in the loft as they take up so much space and weigh a fucking ton.
I don't really read other comics, buy a few collected editions here and there, things like Lazarus, Saga, Grendel, etc, but no superhero stuff.
I shifted my collecting focus over to Persona/SMT merch so spending all my money importing stuff from Japan these days

I find the older I get the less I like Ennis. His run on Hellblazer came along at the perfect time in my youth, and then when Preacher started it blew me away. But then The Boys made me start to suspect he might be out of ideas, plus maybe a bit of a dick, and it’s just got worse since then.
I know everyone has their era of things like movies, music etc, but I’ll die on the hill that grown up comics had their moment from in the 90s give or take a few either side, and nothing has come close since.
Re: Comixology I do find using it on a large IPad a pretty good experience. But not phone.

What can I say, I fucking loved The Boys when I started around age 23-24 and age 39 I can see it has some problematic views about certain things but fuck it, I still love the series.

I kinda stopped in the pandemic when the comic shop I had a standing order phoned that I had a massive backlog to collect, as it was the one near my office I was no longer going to. Which I explained then never showed my face again there.

I tend to read things online nowadays and I've lost track of a lot of things, but I used to be an avid Nightwing reader. I had a lot of time for the X-Men books a few years ago when they started doing the House Of X / Krakoa storyline.
The Wildstorm universe was also a blast, which makes what DC are currently doing with those charcaters seem all the more wasteful.

As a young man I used to follow 2000ad and Marvel religiously. I dipped in and out of DC, Vertigo and various independents. Loved the X-Men, but dropped most of Marvel’s titles when they started doing the annual crossover that would mean having to buy every comic. I think the breaking point was comics having to be part of whatever when it broke up their story and was just shoehorned in.
Kept up with Dark Horse, then Marvel, Star Wars titles. Sometimes I do wonder why. The quality varies massively.

Yeah I personally think Marvel has dropped the ball of late, especially with characters such as Spiderman which is kinda terrible at the moment with the bullshit plots and with John Romita Jr's that has been progressively getting worse.

One More Day destroyed Spider-Man for me. I've jumped back in multiple times since but always struggled to enjoy anything. Didn't help either that at the time you could see Dan Slott appearing on forums, being shitty and arguing with people just trying to discuss his book. I had high hopes for Spencer and Ottley's run but that seemed to run into trouble pretty quickly. Beyond started off ok as I was excited to see more Ben Reilly but that fizzled out then this current run just feels like it's designed to piss fans off.

How is Saga holding up? I have the first 3 or 4 collected ones, but haven't got any for a while. I was quite enjoying it though.
Still decent storytelling?

Yeah it was all Joe Queseda's weird obsession with wanting to make Peter a 15yr old again because how dare he be an adult with a wife, a normal job and a child which actually would be great for the character but there's this weird belief that young teenagers are buying Spider-Man comics. The current run is just continuing the bullshit.

This is exactly my experience. Man I miss vertigo. Also I wish I hadn't changed so much myself sometimes. Rereading Preacher it is quite nasty these days, and how I missed the terrible politics of Fables until really far in amazes me, I just can't read it these days. Sandman though, I reread my absolute collection yearly. Recently started collecting again, there is some interesting stuff out there. I recomend: Department of Truth 8 Billion Genies ... ... I was going to recomend more, but of the 6 series I am subscribed to those are the only ones I really like. Rest are just to support my local store and are mediocre.

Yeah Gaiman and Moore hold up so well because they’re so rich and intelligent to begin with. They actually get better with each read. First time there’s just too much to take in.
Agree must of the Vertigo stuff hasn’t aged incredibly well. Ex Machina was another favourite from that era but it’s kinda boring on a re read.
I still enjoy all the Grant Morrison stuff mind.

I've got a nice mix of older classics and Dredd/2000ad specials (Mazeworld etc) and then more modern classics like Preacher, Y, Transmetroplitan combined with recent collections of Die, Wicked + Divine, Killtopia, Saga etc.
I want some recommendations of things more like Southern Bastards which was fantastic, if anybody has any.

After losing all the early 2000ad/Starlords around 1980 when my family moved house and parents 'accidentally' misplaced my untidy pile of old comics I dropped out of regular subscriptions.
I do collect anthologies but this is often driven by the artist as much as the story creator.
Bolland, Ezquerra, McMahon and O'Neill are my older favourites and I like Jock's Dredd work developing the Dredd movie.
