Regarding the "poor year vs. old fart" discussion, I'm pretty sure for me it's the latter.
There's increasingly few games I actually care about, and when I do play something I rarely feel engrossed. It's all just a big ball of meh.
Of the big hitters this year remarkably few have appealed. Reading through a list of games, the only games that seem all that interesting to me is Tunic, Pentiment and Midnight Suns.
But clearly none have been interesting enough for me to actually play.

I no longer have any motivation at all to play games on release. So I pick them up whenever, and then maybe play them whenever after that. The idea of paying $60 for a newly released game just seems mad to me.
Though of course the kids want Splatoon 3, Just Dance 2023 and the new Pokemon Game. I just bought Deus Ex and Thief 2 for myself. *shrug*

As usual, I actually spent most of my time playing stuff that released in previous yearsā¦ from what I actually played, Iād say Returnal was my favourite game but to stick to 2022 releases:
1) Horizon Forbidden West 2) God of War Ragnarok 3) Elden Ring
Honourable mentions for:
Tunic which was pretty close to displacing Elden Ring for #3 and would have done if it wasnāt for some absolute bastardry in those boss fights and some pretty awful sign posting that had me looking up internet guides just to work out where to go next.
A Plague Tale Requiem which I confess I havenāt finished yet, but is really good. The combat is still quite shonky, and stealth can sometimes frustrate, but the story is good, acting is great and itās very, very pretty.

1) GOW: Ragnarok 2) Elden Ring 3) Vampire Survivors
Elden Ring loses out as I think I'm starting to get tired of the obtuse objectives and lore.
I spent half my gaming time on YouTube watching how to find this or how to defeat that.
It was still very good mind.

Is it a terrible year or are we all now old farts and game less? If a year with Legends Arceus, Sifu, Horizon Forbidden West, Elden Ring, Triangle Strategy, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga, Mario Strikers, FE Warriors Three Hopes, Stray, the Live A Live remake, Xenoblade 3, Plague Tale Requiem, Vampire Survivors, Bayonetta 3, Sonic Frontiers, GoW Ragnarok, Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, the Crisis Core remake and so many others is a bad year, I'm terrified of what a "good" year might do to the household's wallets... See because I'm an old fart nearly all the games on that list either didn't appeal in the slightest or weren't very good and I binned them. Even release day of Ragnarok I didn't even load it up as I wasn't interested and I went out instead. A year or two ago I would have been so excited for it. Old Fart My year was mostly (outside of elden ring) back 4 blood with a sprinkling of games I'd already completed like 2077.

It doesn't help that the concept of AA games seems to have died a death, and it really was a bit bleak for AAA games this year. Plenty of original games from smaller teams out there, but I really miss that middle ground.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a great middle ground game. Can't remember if that was this year though.
There's such a variety of games to play nowadays I'd never be stuck trying to find one to play.

1. Fortnite 2. Tomb Raider Anniversary 3. Guitar Hero World Tour I guess Fortnite counts as this year, as it's endless. I don't think I've played any games released this year. Lego Star Wars was ok, but we're getting a bit over the Lego games format. Firewatch was a bit of a disappointment. Rebel Galaxy Outlaw doesn't seem to have grabbed me. Mario Kart Wii is good, but I still prefer 64. New Super Mario Bros is too infuriating. We put a lot of time into those though. Just Dance is a good workout. Aww I was gonna put Fortnite on my list, because I only really started playing it this year, but didn't because it didn't come out this year. It did just replace the old island and update to unreal 5, that makes it count right? Maybe I should update my number 3...

I still love games, but Iām definitely an old fart in that nothing really get my juices flowing anymore
I could live on just Resident Evil and Dark Souls and not much more these days
Although despite my apathy I still ended up loving Deathloop
I bought Prey for Ā£4 the other day on a whim when I wandered into a CEX store (try saying that sentence out loud instead of typing it)
Might play that next now Iām getting my appetite back

According to my stats I completed 25 games this year, so it was neither a bad year nor I am an old fart. I'm a young, fresh stud of a fart.
A fresh studly fart who hates playing full price for games.

1) Wordle 2) Tunic 3) Elden Ring
I guess Wordle actually came out last year, but it didn't explode in popularity until this year, so I'm making it count.

1. Elden Ring 2. Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord Maybe Pentiment on 3, need to play some more. Same two for me ! Think they were the only releases I wanted to play this year (and I wasn't even sure about ER in the build up).

My problem is finding enough free time to play through and enjoy the best stuff.
That said God of War (pc - steam deck) after playing the ps4 version on release is the only game I can think of that Iāve loved.
Ragnarok might come second but itās a bit of a slow start after 8 hours.
More games need to be 15 hours or less.

GOW - a visual treat and some great set-pieces Stray - something different and full of charm Sniper Elite - my first time with the series and it got it's hooks into me (only played because it was on Game Pass). Really enjoyed playing through the campaign.
Honourable mentions for GT7 and Marvel Snap. GT7 provided some fun Tuesday nights with others from here, and Snap has become my go to filler game.

Problem with old fart syndrome is that I canāt really tell what games I will like anymore. I can choose a game because I like that genre, even games in the same series but after a few hours I will be meh.
Then when I think Iām done with gaming a title comes a long that I really really like and think gaming is brilliant again. Itās a really Costly experience.

I don't think a single game this year has come close to the quality of It Takes Two.
