It was the same on the RPS list, loads of text adventures. Was telling also EG's language about how they were "underwhelmed" and the "surprise" when they realised more than half of their staff had voted for Elden Ring as their game of the year. The EG readers list seems far more genuine than some edgelord clickbait journalism. In a lot of the stuff I've been reading/listening to, the overarching narrative seems to be this year was a bit of a let down in terms of game releases, so thank god for Elden Ring. I dont have any numbers on whether there were fewer releases this year, but I really don't see that it was that bad. I didn't play many new games, but there are plenty I want to try from this year, and gaming is such that it release date barely matters to anyone who isn't a game journalist churning through the years content to be up to date. I dont think that's a problem the average person is likely to have, really.

I wouldn't call it edgelord clickbait journalism, and I do appreciate how they try and champion little known games but a cynical part of me feels like fuck off you're just a contrarian 6th Form student.

Don't have much to add except The Sexy Brutale is brilliant and you should play it if you haven't

That EG list reminded me that Drainus was this year. The thing they did which really pushed it over the edge for me was that first playthrough with the story in effectively 'novice' difficulty, letting me enjoy the game fully without either banging my head against a brick wall of difficulty or slamming my finger against the 'continue' button. If, like me, you like the idea of shooters but can't quite hack the difficulty level of most modern ones, it's a really good one.
It's 9 quid in the Steam sale or there's a bundle with the other Team Ladybug games, Touhou Luna Nights and Wonder Labyrinth, which are two top tier Metroidvania-type games.

EG list (and RPS) being nothing but text adventures is pretty clearly objectively untrue. Scanning the list, I would probably only class two games as such (Mothman and Roadwarden) and they are both games I haven't played or know anything about, so may actually not be text adventures. I guess you could class Pentiment as a text adventure. Still, the majority on the list are clearly far from it.

The EG readers list seems far more genuine It's invalid, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands wasn't even in the Top 50

That EG list is pretty OK actually. Lots of big games on it.

It always seems like such a reductive way to look at games. Like, if you're desperate enough you can boil down pretty much any game to just clicking your mouse/controller and looking at some 'things'.

What mouse-click-looky game was your fave last year?

I only played a couple of 2022 games last year. So my favourites have to be a) Pentiment, a game where you move a person around, looking and reading things, while stuff animates, and b) Vampire Survivors, a game where you move a person around, looking and reading things while stuff animates(dies).
But I did finish the year playing Skyrim, a game where you move a person around, looking and reading things, while stuff (in 3d) animates (sometimes).
