I only just learnt from watching their end of year list videos that James Stephanie Stirling wrote for Vampire Survivors. I’ve not played it but it doesn’t look a particularly lore heavy game. I get the impression JSS isn't that popular on FG. I think you're the only other person I've ever seen mention them

I'm well informed that they are history's greatest monster.

simple the lore is all hidden away in a separate menu that I've honestly never bothered going into. Wouldn't have even known it existed if it wasn't for the backlash on Reddit. Their YouTube output is more annoying than amusing these days, so I'm leaning towards unsubscribing. Can't remember the last time I made it through a full vid. Maybe it was always that way and I've just grown out of the "I'm so zany, look at this rare retro toy I've got! Oooh, hats!" material.

I wasn’t much a fan of theirs when they wrote for Destructoid over a decade ago, so I never followed them onto youtube.
I was a fan of Anthony Burch though, and was excited when he got the Borderlands job. His sister really became a big deal, though.

I think you're the only other person I've ever seen mention them I did quite enjoy the Jimquisitions for a while, but he lost me somewhere along the way. After a while the rants just started to get laborious and his humour has always been hit-and-miss for me.
Ironically I once stumbled on some footage where he wasn't doing a persona and it really was a breath of fresh air.
Edit: I still sometimes like the content though. I think it comes down to the topic and how focussed it is on a particular thing. Oddly I started out perceiving the channel as cringey and I seem to now be half-way back there again...

Oh, I don't mind him either. Most of the time. The completely over-the-top shouting is quite annoying though.

Yeah, I kind of lump those two together. They’re the first things I think of when I think of overlong “It’s Shit!” Youtube rants.

I enjoy the Jimquisition videos even though I don’t watch them all.
I do miss that they don’t do much in the way of review type videos anymore. There are a bunch of games I really like that I would never have discovered without them and now they’ve basically given up in it altogether. Sexy Brutale is one that really jumps out as it got next to no coverage anywhere else.

FH5 is probably the best game I've played that's released this year, but it's not amazing, it's more of a comfort food game. 1) Forza Horizon 5 (not as good as FH4) 2) Total Warhammer III (not as good as TWII, yet) 3) Pokémon Legends Arceus (it's ok) Trying to think of a list I realise I've been so boring this year, barely branching out in to unique experiences. The most fun I've had gaming this year has been playing heavily modded Skyrim. Should I buy Dwarf Fortress to be less dull? I will redo the list: 1. Tunic 2. TW:WIII 3. Pokemon Arceus

I'm not saying I've never bought any From Software games. I have both Dark Souls and Dark Souls III in my Steam library. But I have since given up any hope that I will be able to play any of those games. I have neither the skill nor the patience needed for them. If there is any bitterness, it's because I suffer from chronic FOMO over this. FWIW I bounced off every From game I tried quite early but completed Elden Ring three times. It’s considerably easier and less frustrating than the others. I’d say it’s almost ‘normal game’ difficulty. Okay, this has given me hope that maybe ER is "the one". Bought ER and we'll see how this goes. Any tips for someone who is absolutely hopeless at these type of games?

Slow and steady. You don’t have to kill everything. Come back to stuff that’s too difficult later. Explore. Prioritise levelling Vigour and either Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence or Faith depending on your built and get them into the 20s before doing other stuff. Don’t be intimidated, it’s really not that hard.

Never played it, but heard some of the music on an old Giant Bomb GOTY discussion and thought “I must give that a listen”. But all I’d remembered was “electro swing soundtrack, game based in some fucked up hotel” and Google didn’t help.

Anyway I popped in here to give an honourable mention to Hardspace Shipbreaker, which would have been in my top 3 if I’d realised it came out this year. I spent a lot of the Christmas break playing it while listening to podcasts- there’s no better game for zoning out while also listening to something else

You mean you don’t get why people like it or don’t get how to play it?
The answer in both cases is turn off oxygen depletion. Time to think ahead completely transforms the experience.

It’s not that I can’t see the attraction. I just don’t seem to be very good at it!
I turned off the oxygen depletion straightaway, which will definitely help.
I think it’s because I’ve only played two short sessions: I’m not used to either the controls or the actual objective yet!

I think it’s because I’ve only played two short sessions: I’m not used to either the controls or the actual objective yet! The controls do take some getting used to Objective wise, there is some stuff later where you need to salvage specific things, but near the start you just want to dismantle the ship as efficiently as possible. Find a way into the space between the hull and the passenger compartments, and blast all the cut points you can find with the single beam cutting laser. Once that’s done you should be able to peel the outside panels off one by one and send them to the processor. And then you can get the valuable bits out of the inner compartment more easily, before finally chopping it up for the furnace. Also, get and use tethers ASAP, they’re great for pulling massive bits of ship into the right place when they’re too big for your grapple. There’s a little status bar whenever you grapple anything, if it’s full and red that means the thing’s too big for you to move with the grapple alone.

Looking at EG's games of the year and it still impresses me how little I've heard of the game's they pick. A lot of them seem to be text adventures.

It was the same on the RPS list, loads of text adventures. Was telling also EG's language about how they were "underwhelmed" and the "surprise" when they realised more than half of their staff had voted for Elden Ring as their game of the year. The EG readers list seems far more genuine than some edgelord clickbait journalism.

The main music that plays during the cycle is a disgustingly catchy toe-tapper, and I love how it works with the timings of events during the game.
