Without the gamey bits in between it just devolved into them turning up in a random location where something happens before wandering off again and turning up somewhere else. It all just felt a bit disjointed and lacking the narrative cohesion to give the end the proper punch it needed.

It's hard to see how they could ever do it justice in about 6 hours or whatever it's total runtime was.

Loved the first season (and the game). Saying The Walking Dead was better is crazy talk to me. The first season of that was fine, but everything after was terrible, besides the odd moment. Last of Us is in a different league on basically every level. The only negative for The Last of Us was the ending was a bit rushed, but everything else was excellent.
Not sure how season 2 will pan out though. I really like the second game and not sure one season of TV can do it justice. Surprised they aren't doing a season that is set in-between the first and second game.

I'm pretty sure they're going to split it into two parts just because of how much of there is to get through.

People are so quick to forget how FUCKING terrible The Walking Dead was in its later years.

Even if that’s true though, Walking Dead got time to get bad. The first two or three seasons were excellent. LoU started out mid, is the problem.

It's hard to see how they could ever do it justice in about 6 hours or whatever it's total runtime was. Now that the series is a proven hit they’ll throw more budget at season 2. I’d expect longer runtimes per episode, but as others has said it’s going to be a two parter.

As good as series 1 was, particularly Bill, it didn't have the heft of the game - for reasons said. I'm also unsold on Bella as Ellie.
I think the best parts of the show were separate to the game - Bill, the bit in Indonesia, the added bits to the prologue.
Personally, I'd want them to tell their own narrative with a second series and I rather suspect it'll have to be done, as good chunks of the second game are hide in the long grass OH FUCK THERE'S A DOG.

/Reddit take off.
I don't know -how- S2 is going to work, but I'm interested enough after some peaks and troughs in S1 to give it a go.

The TV show had much less emotional heft than the game IMO, and wasn’t near as horrific either. I did like the show and thought Bella Ramsay was very good in it, but I do think it was overrated. Other half loved it having never played the game. The Bill episode was excellent TV, but yeah, the rest of it was okay. TBH, with both the Last of Us game and TV show, my impressions were the same. Okay, but Walking Dead did what it’s trying to do better. The lack of zombies past the first episode or two really hurt it too. I know it’s going for “man is the true monster,” but that only works if you have the biochemical/supernatural threat to escape. Removing that element turns it into a less interesting Mad Max. Do you know what I forgot about the Bill stuff. Yeah that was excellent. I think in the game this didn’t happen this way and was more about discovering exposition wasn’t it?

Yeah, it was mostly finding letters of Bill having argued with his “partner.” I don’t think the game implies that they were a couple either, rather just business partners, but it worked better how they did it on the show.

Yeah it's...fairly obvious. You didn't watch the scene with the "magazines" then?

No, that bit I do remember. I just don’t remember the Bill and.. Frank, was it? Being implied to be a couple specifically. Bill being gay was never in question.

Bill talks about having " a partner", someone he had to look out for and there's a pregnant pause after partner. Then obviously when he cuts Frank's body down and he responds to it, and if you tell him about the letter, then with the magazines it's becomes quite clear they weren't just simple "business partners".

Alright, you remember it better than I do. The first game didn’t leave a big impression on me. 🙃

I can totally get criticism of the gameplay and setting but...come on...the opening scene and the last scene alone leave big impressions.

The last didn’t, as I had already seen that ending done in Prince of Persia 2008 and I was more attached to those characters than Joel and Ellie. But the prologue with his daughter, absolutely.
I thought the story was much better in the second game, honestly.

I'm certain I read an interview with Druckmann after the first season aired where he was asked if the plan was to go straight into part 2 and he'd said they were looking at taking some time to pad out Joel and Ellie's lives in the time between part 1 and 2.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if most of season 2 is new material and certain events from the start of Part 2 are the cliffhanger ending for the season.
It's been a decent success for HBO so they're going to want to stretch this over as many seasons as they can.
