I'll break from the consensus and go series first, but that's just me. Said it half a dozen times before but it was always a much better story/narrative than it was an actual decent game for my money.

Well my general point was that it's a much better story than it is a game, so personally I'd take the opportunity to soak up the production values of a proper TV show and enjoy that as much as you can if its you're first outing with the material, rather than wrestle with a computer game that was always (again, for me personally) quite clunky and frustrating anyway truth be told.
But that's just me, I'd love to have been able to experience the show blind.

I get that - my wife hadn't played the game and loved it. I was surprised at how much emotional punch it still carried despite knowing the plot etc.

My wife isn't much of a gamer, having at least converted her to Zelda in recent years. But she loved the show. I dabbled a bit with the first one but find the whole Naughty Dog thing boring, so it may be more if you're a gamer into that type of game. Loved the TV show mind.

Move to existing thread. And yeah, play the game first! Thanks. I ran a search for “The last of us” thread title but got no results.

Good to see we have imported the bad bits of EG as well as the good.

I remember it never working on Eurogamer either, and it also reminds me that the search on both can’t seem to deal with words below a certain size. Eg, it will find “Starfield” but it won’t find “Last”

I think the TV series and the game work well as companion pieces, you'll get more out of the TV show if you do both but you're not really getting much of a lesser experience without playing. I doubt everyone nominating the show for lots of awards have played it.
Certain aspects are very different and playing the game will still surprise someone who has only watched the TV show and vice versa.

Yeah I’m a bit torn on it now after reading what people are saying. On the one hand, there’s not really any tension in the show for me because, other than some expansion on certain moments, the milestones are identical to my memory, so maybe watching the show first would be better.
BUT, the main thing that pulls me through a game is the plot, as a good hook makes me endure gameplay that would otherwise make me quit. (Eg I finished The Evil Within despite hating almost every second of playing it). I suspect there’s enough interest in seeing the game through even if you know the outcome (and a lot is different) but…
I don’t think it’s an east choice, as there’s clear advantages and disadvantages either way, so all I can tell the friend is exactly that.
It came about because I bought the 4K discs and offered to lend them once I’m done.

I would say if they want to play the game then play that. If you then want to watch the show too, fine. I wouldn’t recommend watching the show first unless you don’t intend to to play the game.

According to IMDB, Kaitlyn Dever (from Booksmart) has already been cast as Abby.

IMDB being pretty much Wikipedia for films is not the most reliable of sources, it was rumoured a while back she was offered the part but until HBO/SPT confirm it I wouldn't be surprised if it's not correct. While he didn't win at the Golden Globes, Bella was certainly getting right behind Pedro when he was named in his category.

Confirmed - Kaitlyn Dever cast. Doing chin ups as we speak, probably.
Edit: Although the announcement is due to say she's just joined the cast. No mention of character.

I like Dever. I'm still really not convinced about S2 working.

Presumably she'll be more "No One Will Save You" than "Booksmart" but she's very good and hopefully the moronic parts of the internet can control themselves.
Obviously they won't but maybe they'll surprise us for a change...

Yeah it was most likely they’d announce a major character first. There’s more set for this week so I’m guessing Dina and either Jesse or Lev will be announced.

The TV show had much less emotional heft than the game IMO, and wasn’t near as horrific either.
I did like the show and thought Bella Ramsay was very good in it, but I do think it was overrated. Other half loved it having never played the game.

Is part 2 set much longer after part 1? Game wise. I never got past the prologue due to boredom.

Which is going to be a hard sell with Ramsey still looking like a 14 year old.

Other half loved it having never played the game. The Bill episode was excellent TV, but yeah, the rest of it was okay. TBH, with both the Last of Us game and TV show, my impressions were the same. Okay, but Walking Dead did what it’s trying to do better. The lack of zombies past the first episode or two really hurt it too. I know it’s going for “man is the true monster,” but that only works if you have the biochemical/supernatural threat to escape. Removing that element turns it into a less interesting Mad Max.

It's hard to see how they could cover the whole of the 2nd game in one season but I suspect they will. I was never overly impressed with the first season tbh.
