The Walking Dead comic is much older than TLOU game but I’m pretty sure cannibalism and cults are very common across apocalyptic fiction of all ages

Echo the sentiments about wanting more in Jakarta. Genuinely thought we'd see more of that.

I really enjoyed it on a certain level, but nothing was a shock and I knew what was coming. It's interesting that I think (!) this is the first videogame adaptation that doesn't take massive liberties with the story and the characters, and is essentially a faithful adaptation of the actual story of the game. I really liked that they had a completely different take with the Bill & Frank episode, but the majority of it was fairly faithful.
As for the casting of Ellie, I thought Bella did a good job, she doesn't have the look of Ellie, but I do think she played the role really well. Found the extra lore about how it may have spread to the human population interesting but underused.
Solid.

I thought the everywhere simultaneous reason fairly nonsense. Like a single factory's infected output ended up in all food everywhere in the world and being eaten at the same time...

I took that as being another example of being like in George Romero and Shaun of the Dead where there’s a different explanation used each time its brought up because officially no one knows how it began

Considering the global grain supply is controlled by four companies,it's not too far fetched (fungi evolving to control the human population, without infecting other mammals as well is different).

Overall, I wasn't wowed but I wasn't disappointed either. It's fairly standard post-apocalypse fayre, all in all... Isolated communities trying to survive, bandits making life hard for everyone. The story was told competently, although I didn't appreciate the narrative time skipping. It's a cheap storytelling tool.
Episode 3 was the highlight, but it was a shame it didn't have a closer proximity to the main story.

Finished it and loved it. Should be very interesting how they adapt Part 2. Even over two seasons they won’t be able to structure it the way the game is. I mean, they could obviously, I’m just not sure that would make sense as television. I don’t think you could tell the stories in parallel either as that would rob sone of the later revelations of their big punches. My guess would be start off the same and dripfeed Abby’s flashbacks into Ellie’s half of the story in season 2, maybe some sideways references to what she/her faction are doing while giving Ellie most of the screen time. 80/20 split maybe?
Then in the third season follow Abby closely for the first few episodes but I think you’d need to compress her solo section to avoid losing the tv audience. The closing chapter probably needs tightening up as that was kind of baggy in the game to begin with.
I don’t think you could get away with the hard perspective switch the game had with tv structure and expectations being what they are.

3.28 million watched the finale on Sky. That’s bigger than House of the Dragon and everything else except for the season 6-8 finales of Game of Thrones.

Just caught up with this. Enjoyed it a lot, especially episode 3.
Some of the lines ripped wholesale from the game felt a bit off and misdelivered but it was about as good a video game adaption as you can hope to see. Think a lot of the changes have been made to service Part II, particularly the change from spores to the fungus network thing.

Finished this last night and overall a good adaptation of the game. I must admit I was a bit disappointed with the last episode. It was way too short and was hoping there would be a bit more depth put into the whole medical side of the virus and Ellie. The 3rd episode was good but to be honest it doesn't have the impact the game had with that storyline. Also that episode was probably the longest, over an hour but the last episode is 43 minutes, just a waste imo.
Not nearly enough infected, action and tension from the threat. That's probably my biggest issue with the series.
It makes me realise more just how outstanding the game is to this day.

Yeah it bombed through a lot of stuff at a rate of knots. Having 2 episodes and a subplot for the Kansas section felt a bit much when it felt like more interesting parts were kinda glossed over, especially the last episode.

Yeah, 2 episodes of back story when the there is only 9 episodes is ridiculous imo. I'm getting more annoyed about this series the more I think about it. My wife really enjoyed the series to start with (she's not played the game) but she said "was that it?" at the end, just didn't get the tone of the ending correct at all.

Finished it the other night. Not played the games though I was aware of the giraffe scene and ending "dilemma" for Joel.
Though it was pretty good, acting was great and the world felt real...
The cannibalism thing could be spotted a mile off though, ans is indeed almost a staple of post-apocalyptic fiction.
Not sure who Ishmael is that people mention, is he that Kathleen's number two?

I think the theme here is that people who played the game are a bit more critical than those who didn’t. If you’ve seen a story unfold at 15 hours or so, it might feel truncated to see it speedrun at ~8 hours.
Honestly, part 2 could use some truncating.

Finally got around to watching this and finished it last night. Absolutely loved it. Pascal and Ramsey brought the characters truly to life, whilst also putting their own spin on them. They didn't change much to the story, with any changes they did make mostly just expanding on plot points in a positive way or they were fairly inconsequential. Only bit I did feel didn't work quite as well as the game was not having the time skip during Joel's recovery from the attack at the uni. His recovery felt a little too sudden here, but a minor quibble and likely not one I would have if I hadn't of played the game Was disappointed when I started up the last episode that it was only a 9 episode season, instead of 10 I had expected. The ending did feel a tad rushed and I think it could have benefited from another episode, but it was still great. Can't wait to see how they handle part 2. I'm surprised to hear they are going to jump straight into it, as I assumed they would do a season filling in the gap between the two games. The second game is much more expansive than the first, so I expect they will do it over two seasons. No idea how they will structure it though.

Finally started this a few weeks back and want to take some time with it so doing things the old fashioned way and watching one episode a week.
Just finished episode 3 and well, I wasn’t expecting that at all. Exceptional. Grabbed me right in the feels. One of the best episodes of anything I’ve seen in a while.

I’m up to episode 5 of the show and trying to decide how to recommend to a person who HASN’T played the game. Would the show spoil the game or the game spoil the show?
I’m currently feeling like the show would be better to watch first as it’s somewhat different from the game, while the game has the actual, you know, gameplay to keep you interested while if you see the show knowing the broad strokes of the story, it’s perhaps less interesting.

There are a lot of differences but either is going to spoil the big beats of the other whichever way they do it.
Guess it just depends how much of a game player they are. The tv show is probably only a third the length of playing it.

The show riffs on the game. You’d get more out of both by playing the games first.

To clarify, I’ve played both games, have a friend who hasn’t played it yet or watched the show, says he’s intending to do the pc version at some point.
