In the early cut I saw "they" weren't finished yet, and had stock stills superimposed on the image, except for one scene where they didn't even do that and they were talking to a giant green sock puppet. Need to see this user Rawshark

Enjoyed the episode. The ending was so quick though. Once they get captured, Joel does about 2 mins of shooty shoot and that's a wrap.
Overall an 8/10 for me. Can't compare to the game for me, but when you have to recreate something with far less runtime it never was going too. The cast and especially the main two made it great though. They were different from the game, but great in their own way. Interesting extra stuff and nods to the game.
Looking forward to Season two despite thinking the story in Part Two was crap. Interested to see if they change some stuff up. Hopefully the ending, which was unreal padded and GoT S8 level of writing.

They've said that Part 2 will be told over more than one season.

I've only just realised who played Anna in the opening section of the last episode... Duh! It felt like a great bit of casting because she actually looks the part as the mum of Ramsey's version of Ellie, but I somehow didn't cop that it was actually OG Ellie.
One of the nurses is also played by the actress who plays Abby in part 2

I dunno, yes, it did feel a touch rapid, and suffered a bit for it- the giraffe scene lacked the impact it had in the game because you’d just been wading through some of the toughest sections in the game prior- but overall I kinda like that they had something special but didn’t needlessly pad it out ala The Hobbit, for example. I watched the video game end sequence afterwards and it’s absolutely beat for beat the show ending, though I think the game hits a touch harder. Shows the remarkable level of maturity that was in that game that they could just take it wholesale and put it into an enormo-budget show.

High point of the season was the Nick Offerman episode. Downhill from there. Last episode pretty good but felt a bit rushed.
Joel having soppy long chats in an open and indefensible area is counter to his survivor persona.
Ellie was badly cast too.
I'm fearing the nerd rage for season 2 already.

I thought Bella really acted her face young for the baby scene.

Well having got round to watching the final episode I can't say I'm not a little disappointed with the series overall, sure there were some excellent episodes, (episode three springs to mind) and acting and characters was generally pretty good, certainly a few silly moments that rubbed me up the wrong way. The obligatory can't help thinking the whole thing was a little rushed with most episodes being fairly short and episode 7 unnecessary, I did think it was a nice touch showing how Elle came into existence.
7/10

Having never played the game, and having an aversion to things like invasion of the body snatchers or zombies; I cannot deal with apocalyptic visions you cannot escape from, so the premise was daunting. It was nicely shot, some great episodes, and some damn fine acting in places. But, and I understand that the praises were for a great storytelling in s video game, it was distinctly average as a story. It sits as fairly average, though I thought Episode 3 was great. Though, it did not fit into the general story, or did I miss something. When it was funny, it was great, but heartwarming also. Ellie teasing Joel about the porn mag, and that bit where he said he was in the mood for puns. That was great. Teen pushing the boundaries, father figure trying to break the doldrums. There are some 10/10 moments.
Maybe the Mario movie will deliver.

Not sure what the budget was for this but defo felt like it was almost a tentative dip toe in the water type approach. Wouldn't be suprised if it went all "aliens" for the next few seasons. Due to its success I seem to be one of the few that loved the 2nd game so I'm excited.
Bit disappointed we didn't get the snowy shack attack

It had an absolutely massive budget. $10m per episode kind of thing.

I thought it was good overall, but perhaps not as strong as the first few episodes were. I'm general the changes made were good.
Pedro was good, if maybe slightly too likeable. Bella was also good, although I think miscast. Just never really thought of her as Ellie. A fair bit of that is appearance and thinking of her as British rather than American teenager. The girl from Wednesday might have been better.
Anyway looking forward to series 2. The plot of that is both brave and unlike anything I can recall seeing on TV. I'd hope they recast Ellie with an older actress.

Just finished the third episode. What a good episode. Even Offerman’s boyfriend looking like Jordan Peterson in the final third didn’t take anything away from it.
Its a weird show so far, obviously it looks incredible and its extremely faithful to the game. But then all of the best or most interesting bits so far have been the original content when it steps furthest away from the game.
Have been avoiding reviews but will have to look up if people who haven’t played it feel the same once I’m done.

The third episode is probably the biggest step away from the game, and my missus agreed that it's one of the strongest ones. Just a great little standalone story.

Would be great to have more episodes like that. Think it was a missed opportunity to not have an episode given to Ish’s story and finally get to see that play out in person. I guess the problem would be it would break up the momentum of Henry and Sam’s story.

You already have 2 entire episodes that add little to Joel and Ellie’s story, with 10-15 minutes for flashbacks in 3 more, as well as extended content for Marlene and Henry and Sam. Adding more non-essential back/side stories would run their journey into the ground. Even adding a 10th episode would hurt the pacing again, as every 3rd episode would be filler.
Bill’s episode was probably the best in the season, just for pure TV, but it’s just a distraction from what we’re trying to invest in.
A spin-off anthology series - The Rest of Us, maybe? - would be really interesting to do though. With stand-alone and maybe a couple of two episode arcs. Having that include Left Behind, Henry and Sam, Bill and Frank, a proper look at life with the old couple, and more, would have been nice.

Yeah you have the overarching story but I don’t think it would hurt the pacing to break it up here and there so long as the stories intersect. You want to build the world as well as the main two characters.
That said, I can only think of one secondary character in Part 2 Id devote a whole episode to. There’s a lot of ground to cover in the main story.

The second game will be covered by two seasons, so plenty of time to diverge with a few side stories there I'd say.

It was all interesting enough, I just don’t think any of it was necessary in this series. Same with the game - you don’t know any of it but you get a fine sense of how fleshed out the world is through the eyes of Ellie and Joel. Left Behind isn’t essential, as good as it is.
I’ve no issue with fleshing it all out more - seeing the outbreak, etc. - but I feel like that could all be delivered better and without using up the time here that could have better represented Joel and Ellie’s relationship. It sort of felt like Joel treated her as a job, then laughed at a joke, then decided she was his new daughter. I would have liked to have seen them bond more, and him save her more - from events (the river and the flooded area with the bus, for example) and infected. Have her actually use the rifle a bit. She says that it can’t be for nothing after all that she’s done but she didn’t really -do- anything?
For a show with the infected as a backdrop, only seeing them be any kind of threat for 2 episodes felt low. They removed spores (seeing Joel with mask and Ellie without, moving through spore and infected infested areas is a cool visual and helps emphasise her immunity) and replaced it with the underground roots, which they used once and then ignored forever more.

In this thread, it was too similar to the source material and also unnecessary to branch out to do anything different.
It was also to brief and also had episodes that were padding.
Just goes to show that no matter what you do you can't ever please everyone.

I enjoyed it, and the main characters were great But I found it a little slow towards the end. Started to feel a bit like The Walking Dead... And religious zealot cannibal? Straight out of TWD I called it as soon as they appeared.

I think the last of us may have done the storyline first as it came out in 2013.
I'm pretty sure it had been done elsewhere before that mind.
