I don't see why the couldn't have gone with north. He is the right age and the amazing performance in the game was mo capped so it's not like he couldn't have nailed it. He was just so so much creepier in the game . It's one of those things where it'd be a weird mismatch though - David's voice and Nolan's appearance don't gel at all. Same with Troy Baker and Joel.

If anyone has a spare 16 hours-ish once the show is over and feel like suffering through some very low skill gameplay with really great insight to the process and thought behind the characters, the Troy Baker/Nolan North definitive playthrough series from a few years ago is really interesting. They bring all the key actors in while playing through the respective areas in the game.

Part 1: How bad would you say the gameplaying is because I get easily annoyed by people playing games terribly in a video, especially game journalists.

It's... not good. Troy is ok (he actually plays games) but Nolan is fairly terrible. I watched the whole thing a couple of years back and found it really interesting but I was very much focusing on what they were talking about rather than what they were doing. They talk about gameplay and scenes as they're happening, so you don't just need to watch the fails. I think I had it running on a second screen so spent most time listening and then just watching bits as they spoke about pivotal stuff.

I kind of wonder if there’s an element of being too close to the game at play here. Anecdotal evidence and all that, but the people I know who are watching this who have never played, or even heard or, the game are ranking it up there in the best TV shows ever category, and think Pedge and Bellie should sweep awards season.

I'm really loving it, and I love the games. But I am not really comparing them - I'm just enjoying the crossover bits when they happen.
It wouldn't translate at all well if it was 1:1 - you'd be spending 5-6 entire episodes just watching clickers get shivved all the time. It'd be crap.
I think this is where the screen adaptation works really really well for the story, and the combat doesn't if you overdo it, whereas the game has the same great story, but you also want to enjoy killing stuff more.
As soon as I stopped comparing it directly to the game all the time, I found myself enjoying the screenplay much much more.

I'm not comparing it to the game but I would be interested to know if people have the same reaction to things to those who played the game first.

I'm loving it and loved the game. Watching with my wife adds an extra layer of enjoyment to see how she will react to certain bits.
I have to try my hardest and not give it away by turning to her with an excited face when I know somethings about to happen.

Yeah, same. My fiancée keeps asking things like “does this guy die?” and she’s getting pissed at me saying “watch the show and find out”

I'm absolutely loving the show. I adored the game's story but thought the gameplay was just fair. I'm hardly alone in that. But I also played the game long enough ago to have forgotten quite a few specifics circling around the main story beats. For instance, a lot of people have discussed how the last episode should have had Ellie and David fight off the infected together and how much better it would have been. I just don't remember that so it doesn't bother me.
That said, my main frustration with the show is the short running time of some episodes - the last one needed a good 15-20 minutes more to flesh things out. It was slightly dissatisfying, and there's a difference between being engagingly pacy and rushing stuff.
On that note: I was pretty disappointed to read somewhere today that the final episode will be 40 minutes - I really hope it's not true.

It just really gets my goat when I see people playing a game as if it was the first time they'd seen a video game before.

Or Paul McCartney playing Guiter Hero/Rock Band* Beatles. I should have been him, getting 100% on vocals and bass.
* I cannot recall which franchise did the Beatles edition. I just remember loads of beer, a barbecue, people taking turns on vocals, lead, bsss and drums; and getting 100% simultaneously. I may, as was the way of the time, woken up in a piss soaked mattress the next day. Damn, I was so cool.

I told her wait until season 2. I finished replaying 2 recently and have wondered whether they'll stick so closely to the source. If this season is summed up with 'when you're lost in the darkness, look for the light' - and there is light in season 1 - the next one is more 'when you're lost in the darkness, and you think for a second there's a sliver of light ahead, the darkness will fucking consume you and everyone you love and any hope you have for the future and when the darkness eventually shits you out into more darkness, which is somehow darker, you'll be nothing more than a husk on the darkness' mantlepiece, doomed to vaguely remember what the light was like, but knowing there's none more for you.' Revels in its misery. I love it, but the bits where you're murdering people in between the story are the light parts. Take those out and I'm not sure what's left is palatable in the concentrated doses TV offers.

I've been thinking the same thing. I think we should expect more substantial changes otherwise it's going to be unwatchable (and I'm speaking as someone who loved the game).
I'm not sure what or how. Maybe Abby occasionally breaking into song. Or a Shambler doing a tap-dance routine before bursting into a cloud of spores precisely on the final beat.

I also think if they try to smash it into a single short season like this one again they'll ruin it. Hope it's either longer or spread across two, especially if they want to expand out like they did with episode 3, which remains my favourite, so I hope they do.

Just watched the David episode. Defo rushed and raises a lot of questions. I also felt he was miscast. Game David is waaaaay better.

Just watched episode 5 which was mostly great as usual, apart from the utterly ridiculous Bloater. They could've done with just ditching them completely.
Rubbish but of casting for Kathleen too (she's a decent actress, just not a good fit in this)

Up to the left behind episode now, so timed that pretty well thankfully. Cracking stuff, and really gave Ramsey a chance to shine. She definitely grows on you as Ellie, but they probably could've done with toning down the abrasive smartarse comments a bit at first. That episode felt like the closest they've stuck to anything from the game so far, or maybe I just played it more recently than the main game so it stuck in my memory more...
I'll definitely be playing through part 1 soon after we've finished this if I can find it for a reasonable price.
