A great episode but as mentioned by others could have easily been a longer one, it felt a bit rushed for such a relevant part to their journey.

It should absolutely have been rated 18. Up until that episode, it was fine for 15 year olds. But I am in no doubt that should have been rated 18 / R with far more warnings ahead of it for families watching it with younger kids.
An added problem is the fact you probably have a lot of parents whose kids are 12 / 13 watching 15s as 15s are generally ok for a 15 rated. That was definitely not suitable.

There's a verbal warning before each episode of very strong language/violent scenes.

Had an additional warning before yesterday's too.

My 15yo watched Squid Game and I reckon she’d be fine with this… but yeah I wouldn’t want my 12yo watching it. Generally I’m ok with the 12yo watching some things rated 15 (Stranger Things for instance), but only if I’ve seen them first.
I am once again glad that I don’t have any prior expectations from the game - I thought this week’s episode was brutal and brilliant, and wouldn’t have thought about the pacing if no-one had mentioned it.

I needed more time with that episode. I really did. But that ending...FUCK. It hit souch god damned harder than the game. Bella Ramsey has nailed this, can't wait for season 2.

Yeah, I was genuinely disturbed by 'that bit' before the end

Yeah, that bit.
I had my hand over my mouth, practically dumbstruck. And I knew what was coming but, fucking hell.

It's a great show, but becoming 8/10 rather than 10/10 for me. With the show, I'm missing those quiet periods between the big story beats.
Fwiw I'm in the not-so-convinced by Bella camp, which... means I agree with geefe. Eeek.

She's amazing in the aggressive elements, but the more subtle parts don't really work - leaving judgement open on the last ep. Also not sure if that's a directors choice

I have played the games, yeah. Game Ellie was a more nuanced character imo. Bella Ramsay is doing a great job, but personally it's hard to disentangle the two when the TV show follows the plot of the games so closely. I just wish she had a bit more range between ANGRRRRRRY and giggly little girl.

Game Ellie is much more inquisitive than giggly teenager. That's where the bond comes from, for me, when she's wandering around just looking at things and asking about coffee machines, records, etc.
I don't think TV Ellie has said anything quietly contemplative like it being sad that there's all this music in a shop that nobody gets to listen to.

I’ve never seen tv Ellie appear delicately anxious or frivolously anticipatory or even jubilantly industrious.
She has no range that girl. And she doesn’t even look like she could EVER look 19. 3/10 for me. Preferred the pixel version.

I thought the end part in the game hit so much harder. Plus it didn't help that I thought Nolan north was X10 better as David.

One question I had watching the episode was where the hell did the rest of the town go while the restaurant was on fire? Otherwise I still think the show does a damn fine job of stitching together the dramatic moments of the game while adding its own touches.
The interrogation scene was always my favourite from the game, and it’s basically a copy paste. I like how it was foreshadowed earlier in the series.

Joel found a tank.
That’s what the episode needed. Joel riding into town like Simon Pegg in Hot Fuzz.

Will watch it with the last episode but hard to see how it tops the David introduction and reveal in the game, especially when you realise what he knew all along.

They weren't likely to get someone of the same heights, but an actor. The show David did ok, but was weak sauce in comparison. Show has been 8/10 for me also I think. It's done so much well, bit just can't compare to the game as so much of the actual infected stuff is in actually playing the game, not the story cutscenes. Same as the Joel and Ellie relationship. So much of that is built during playing the game. Main cast have been really brilliant though.

David reminded me of Charles Dance actually. Not visually, albeit he does bear a resemblance, just his mannerisms and style.

By the time you get to the "I'm not her" line in the game, you've done so much together compared to this. It's still really really good but demonstrates how good games are at building a bond with a character. I can imagine the ending won't land the same way either.

It's just really time restrained. The "You're not my daughter, and I sure ain't your dad." didn't really hit that hard because we didn't really see enough of them building a relationship. And end of last episode they seem like basically Father and Daughter.
But not a lot they can do about that really. I'd have preferred more episodes in the season probably, which would have helped a bit.

I don't see why the couldn't have gone with north. He is the right age and the amazing performance in the game was mo capped so it's not like he couldn't have nailed it. He was just so so much creepier in the game .

I agree with all of this, every episode could have easily been a long one IMO, except for episode 7, which I thought was a bit pointless.
