Dying Light 2 is irking me a bit with some stuff. Mostly that 5 button presses from splash screen to get into a game. I don't want to watch the intro, or the two pages of tips shit you're telling me about, yes I'd like to start game, continue game and then not have to hear about the current event you have on thanks. All of which need button presses. Bah.
I also kind of hate the jarring story stuff- someone's disappeared and you can't find them, BUT they will then pipe up on some random side mission shit. I thought you'd gone?
I'll leave all the other annoying stuff.
Tl;dr Dying Light 2 is not as good/fun as I'd hoped and has some annoying mechanics in it.
Must finally get it finished soon.

Games with loot/weapons where the upgrades are tiny increments that you barely notice. Wow, this weapon is 1.7% faster and 1.3% more powerful! Mission structure in Rockstar Games. Also, the controls in Rockstar games.

I've resigned myself to the fact I've binned it off. Which is very disappointing.

I am plugging away at it for now, but it is a chore. Having dropped it for elden ring and then summer, I can also no longer remember the required button presses for the special moves you can do.
However, the main stumbling block is that it's just a bit ham-fisted and shit. I loved the first one too, but this seems like a step back, not more streamlined.

Yeah that echoes my thoughts exactly. It's like THIS is the first game, then they ironed out all the crap and went and made Dying Light 1.

Since I just got reminded of it when I saw Ridge Racer talk in another thread… Racing games that don’t let you progress to the next track in season mode unless you have a podium finish. Fair enough in arcades it was the done thing to snaffle as many 50ps as possible but it makes no sense on a home release. Just let me be mediocre and enjoy the ride, it’ll feel so much better when I git gud enough to eventually win instead of controller snappingly mad when I finish fucking fourth again because some cheating bastard bumps me on the final cornerI kind of hate Gran Turismo 7 for this reason. They took out the arcade mode, which was often the thing I liked to jump in and out of whenever I had free time. Doesn't help that the single player career mode is the absolute most boring I've ever played, with the cheesy cafe and NPCs that sound like they're reading a brochure to you.

Yeah me too, after a while I just noticed the seams and became immediately aware of how repetitive it was but there wasn't anything compelling enough to get me to keep coming back.

Racing games putting you right into some introduction/tutorial race on first launch before you even get the chance to see the main menu. Extra points if you have to finish them before being allowed to the menu.

Any genre of games doing that! I hate forced tutorials.

Especially if you can't even get to the settings yet to fiddle with the graphics setup etc.
FFS, I don't need this game to run at 304fps whilst maxing out the GPU!

Forced tutorials sits in the same area as games using forced menu navigation when you first start - where it blanks out all but one highlighted option and makes you do something like sign a player for your team.
Strikes me as symptomatic of shitty UX and UI, if you don't think users will understand what to do and how to do it.
FIFA Mobile is absolutely ridiculous for it - it's basically all you do for the first hour.

Extra points if you have to finish them before being allowed to the menu. True in other genres too. Battlefield has done it in a couple of games, where you are forced into a playing cinematic sequence before getting into the menu. Particularly annoying on PC. Yes, it is nice and immersive to throw you into the middle of chaos, but I want to be able to get my settings all sorted before I get into the game.

Driver takes pole position. Hoo boy. I remember playing the demo of that for weeks, if not months, waiting for that game to finally release. And then that fucking tutorial, gah! Hours wasted trying to get past it just to play the game.

Never got passed it, the rage took over and I binned it off. Just couldn't stand any more of that tutorial.

One forced tutorial that I hated with a passion was the one for Driver where you had to do all these different manoeuvres in an underground car park and not hit anything. Absolute bullshit.

Played a bit of Jedi Fallen Order via EA Play and it has an option to turn off QTE's AND an option to turn off the "hold button to do XY" shit. It feels wrong to applaud EA for something, but this is great.

Not a game mechanic per se, but these newer games that have terms of service about data collection. They ask you agree or disagree, but it's bullshit because if you disagree, they don't let you play the game.

I just remembered that I hate when arcade shmups make you mash the shoot button for regular fire, because holding the button is assigned to some different mechanic.
Good thing emulators and ports usually let you map an auto-fire button too. It does make Gigawing much more playable.

And not letting you select 'Accept' unless you've scrolled all the way through, as if they can prove you must have read it that way. No one's reading it. Can't remember what game it was but there was one that popped up a message telling me I can still opt-in in the options menu later after I declined, as if one day I might just decide I'd like share it after all

It feels wrong to applaud EA for something, but this is great. Respawn are amazing devs really, EA are lucky to have them. In some ways it's a shame Apex legends will be the thing they'll probably be remembered for (not that it's bad, just that I'm sure they rather be doing narrative led games in the Titanfall universe)

Sub-genre of annoying mechanics: forced tutorials that are ironically self-aware of how shit forced tutorials are but still make you do one while telling you how shit it is that you have to do it the whole time

It feels wrong to applaud EA for something, but this is great. Any game that includes a 'tap button to win' and doesnt allow you to just hold it is an automatic fail. Tap QTEs have never added anything to anything ever.

Stealth. Whenever I read about stealth sections in a game I immediately switch off. Hate them!

Forced tutorials are awful. A better solution is to just have prompts appear during the intro level that can be ignored if not needed. With the option to disable entirely.
It can also be quite bad when games have a fleeting pop up describing a critical action, that then dissapears before the chance to read it.
Even worse, if a hint or prompt is mentioned very early, then that particular mechanic doesn't come into play into many hours later. By which time I've forgotten.

Or a game giving you 20 slides or so of explaining every single game mechanic and UI element at once, so it's like reading the whole manual before playing. By the time I'm finished with slide 20 I've forgotten what 1-18 were about.
