That tutorial is infuriating. Worse, some 15 or 20 minutes in I wanted to quit the game and didn't know how savegames work in this game. I hoped it would have autosaved at some checkpoints like most games do, only to find I had to do it all over again. I quit and uninstalled.
(I installed it again a few months later and played a few levels, but then quit for good because aside from the style I was really, really not enjoying this game. For some reason, I must have hoped that somehow it wouldn't be a Far Cry game)

The reasons why people seem to often consider Blood Dragon their favourite Far Cry-game have always sounded so specific to me that I never bothered trying it. At least judging from footage I could never see what was supposed to be so good about it. I guess if you like that kind of tone and atmosphere, then it might work?

I liked Far Cry 3 so this was, gameplay wise, more of the same. The setting and style is kinda cool if you're into it, but if you're not I can see how the humour would start to grate.

Yup. It's a shorter Far Cry with some retro and retrowave aesthetics and a big dose of stupid applied. I enjoy it but obviously it's not going to be to everyone's taste and i think that was the point. I think they just wanted to have some fun with the engine in between their more serious releases.

As for game mechanics I hate, while strictly speaking not a “mechanic” I really think cut scenes have had their day. There was a time when they were like a genuine reward for progress, an earned break and a chance to see some stunning CGI visuals. These days we’re completely saturated with CGI content so that side of it has lost all impact, and there are far more sophisticated and immersive ways of storytelling in games now.

I hate bad AI pathing. Especially when driving. When NPCs see your vehicle and jump right in front of it rather than away. Or when you're driving down a street and there's a red light with cars stopped. So you wait behind them, then another car rams into you from behind. Or you're driving down the highway, and a car merges into your lane and bashes into you. AI not reacting to your vehicle is one of my worst gripes in open world games.

Halo when the Marines don't jump on the gun, or when the one who already has a rocket launcher does and leaves a sniper in the front seat to hit nothing. Also in driving AI, and higher difficulties of Forza Horizon are terrible for it, just being rammed off the road at the first corner. On Forza Horizon games, not AI, so should know better, but you know the public event where you race an AI team and it's all about 2 points each for finishing ahead of an AI or 4 points for first place? It just becomes Mad Max with half the team actively trying to push you off the road so they can get that first place. But then they can't because they've shaved thirty seconds off their start time by playing dodgems. The game should penalise people for it.

Boss fights when you hit the enemy and realise it's going to take about 20 minutes to kill it. The fight isnt hard or challenging just a massive tedious slog of plinking away. Boss fights in general. I hate boss battles. I even hate the ones I like.

This is a film thing but I really hate when cinemas play a scenes from the film you’ve paid to see before the film actually starts. M&ms at the red carpet level of fuckery. Video games don’t do it often but some can’t resist showing the best pets of the game before you’ve hit start.

Long, multi stageboss fights where the first three quarters of the fight is a long, boring, easy grind but the last section survey leaves no room for error.
It's *so much fun* having to repeat the first 10 minutes of a fight just to get to the part that you need to practice.

This is a problem with older games, but when you couldn't pause cutscenes, and start would skip them.
This was an utter joke in the MGS games.

On a similar note, one thing that irks me is that you can't rewind cutscenes to this day. If you get interrupted, or just feel like you missed some detail and want to go back, well fuck you it's gone forever.

Racing games putting you right into some introduction/tutorial race on first launch before you even get the chance to see the main menu. Extra points if you have to finish them before being allowed to the menu. True in other genres too. Battlefield has done it in a couple of games, where you are forced into a playing cinematic sequence before getting into the menu. Particularly annoying on PC. Yes, it is nice and immersive to throw you into the middle of chaos, but I want to be able to get my settings all sorted before I get into the game. I'm not an FPS guy but I tried out one of the recent Battlefield games when it became free on Plus. It was a WW2 one and it started like a playable trailer, seamlessly jumping from one battle to another, some of which you were a fucking fighter pilot. I bet it looked and played really well for genre veterans but it was a hot mess for me, and it was taking itself so seriously to boot. I didn't make it past the intro

The horror! Lives wasted. Let's have a moment of silence accompanied with a few poems to really respect the loss of life. - Rest of the game: You, a lone soldier, take out half of the Nazi forces single handedly, with occasional witty remarks. - Multiplayer: Boom! Headshot for extra bonus points! - 2042 end of round: "You can't handle me!", "And that's how the cookie crumbles!", "Can you smelllll what the specialist is cooking?!"

Rubber banding in racing games. Ridge Racer was one of the worst offenders, the gradual realisation that your performance over the first 90% of the race was totally irrelevant. You can cover those first four laps in 5mins or 7mins, the only bit that actually matters is being immaculate through the last lap once the designated 'rival' car miraculously appears just in front or just behind to ruin your day.
Now admittedly the FIA did introduce a form of real-life rubber banding at the final round of the F1 World Championship last year, but that was bullshit as well!

When loot drops have a pickup delay, so you have to wait around every single time after killing an enemy. Almost all games do this shite.
When enemies' hurt animation is also their death animation, so I frequently mistake one for the other in the heat of battle with multiple enemies. Castlevania derivatives in particular love this.

The entire race outcome was always determined by the last few corners. It was done because the available vehicle types had wildly different performance profiles and the game was balanced entirely by rubber banding the AI. Infuriating. I really liked those games otherwise.

Not really a mechanic, but Soul Hackers 2 has an infuriating number of drip feed text tutorials which ask if you're sure you want to close them, with the default option being no. I know it's only an extra swish of the left stick and a press of a button, but it starts to grate so damn much.
Knowing my luck there's an option to turn that off that I've also missed...

I too remember looking at my lap times and race time and trying to figure out what I needed to win, before it eventually dawned on me that this was irrelevant. Rubber banding is the single biggest thing that puts me off arcade racers, even the likes of Mario Kart. If it's a skill based game but not a consistent fair challenge it's not fun.

Opponents got a speed boost not only if they were behind you but also if they were ahead of you--the further ahead, the faster, to a point where it was impossible to catch up even with constant stars and speed shrooms. I hope this was a bug, I can't imagine that was intended.

Skill checks that have a chance to fail, like Speech in Fallout 3. If I've heavily invested in Speech to then fail with 80% or something, I'm just reloading because it's bollocks
