At least they sort of realised how stupid pulling a Pokemon was and whichever one you bought second was half price... And 3DS games were cheaper, so the Fates full version +DLC ended up costing about the same as Three Houses +DLC I think it was also the case that Birthright was Easy mode and the other was Hard, then you had the final 'proper' story with characters from both. Just a really convoluted mess that put me off
And typical with Nintendo, the version with all 3 components was limited and sold out when I bought it
Was it Fates where you had to visit the Rainbow Sage? Jesus
I think it also had the child mechanic shoehorned into it without making much sense. Definitely felt like a case of chasing/milking the success of Awakening

Still liked it more than Three Houses, though!

Anyway, I hope whatever the next one is, keeps the focus away from dating sim and towards cool map design. I'll still play it no matter what - Fire Emblem is pretty much the only series that I get on Day 1 release - but I don't really like the social stuff. Leave that to the fanfic writers!

I would prefer they ditched the between battle stuff altogether. One of the reasons I'm gutted there wasn't much uptake for Advance Wars is that it's still pure and untouched by anime fans

Steam Trading Cards unlocking for characters/things I haven't yet reached in any given game. Can be fucking massive spoilers.

Although you do need to actually pay attention to what everyone says in that. Plus every class of character has their own incomprehensible font.

Its a really good touch, just with my eyes it does mean dragging a stool up close to the telly to play. I liked that not just changes in dialogue get corrected but when in my playthrough he realised a character was better educated than Mahler first assumed that character’s font got an upgrade. I’m halfway through the NoClip episode about the making of it. They really did their homework.

Add The Plucky Squire to the press A crew but also the list of games that doesn't trust it's players and feels the need to have someone tell you what to do as soon as you come up to a puzzle.

Yes! Only about 1-2 hours in but good God will this game just let me play? I've understood the systems now leave me be.

With state of decay 3 coming out, I have zero faith they will make interesting new zombie types, every zombie game has the same sort of enemy. Because its an zombie game, most gamers give a free pass. its very creatively bankrupt tbh

Any game where you can play as a Necromancer should have your character's name be Robin Graves by default.

devs still don't make good boss fights overall, Dying light 2 has complete piece of shit boss fight, not sure if they even improved it in their reloaded edition. its like they don't even know whats wrong
AC mirage had slightly annoying one, trying to hit the boss in the shoulder as its quite janky

100% not a mechanic, but store pages for compilations that don't list the games included. I mean, WTF?

I really hate pressing the analogue control sticks, for instance to run. Not every game allows you to re-map it either. I've unmapped my clicks and put them on to paddles on my elite controllers. The number of times I click them by accident otherwise is ridiculous.

Stick press to run is a crazy idea. No idea how it became widespread.

Developer’s desperation to use as many inputs as possible and over complicate controls.

Hints and tips that can't be turned off.
Wild Hearts: Hey, did you know that you respawn at a camp when you die?
Me: No. In my defence, I've only been playing for 80-odd hours, so there's no conceivable way I could've known that.
Wild Hearts: No need to be sarky. I'm trying to help!
Me: IT'S NOT BLOODY HELPFUL! IT HASN'T BEEN HELPFUL FOR OVER 79 HOURS, NOW!
Gah.

Save game systems that don't create seperate lists of saves for different careers, resulting in one endless list of saves from across all your characters.

Stick press to run is a crazy idea. No idea how it became widespread. This is currently pissing me off in the Dead Space remake. Doesn't work half the time, and in this game when you need to run it's usually because there's a horrible deadly monster right fucking behind you. I really appreciated the always run option in Returnal, wish this game had it.

Or only having one save that remembers where you were last exactly.... even if you were stuck in the environment...

Gravity inversion. Just fucking stop.
True to form, Mega Man X7 managed to make this more horrible than ever too. Taking place in an actual 3D environment, parts of the controls were inverted but others weren't and of course you were switching back and forth all the time and it was an utter confusing nightmare

Not a general game mechanic, but it's my incontestabile opinion that Hexen would be a lot better without those damn centaurs. Who thought having an enemy that can make itself impervious to standard attacks at frequent, random intervals was a good idea? And especially, to make it a common enough enemy that some levels should be filled with them?

This one from Alan Wake 2.
After finish a main story quest it gives me the optional investigate the previously flooded area objective. Looking online though shows me that's not possible until later in the game when you get a tool that will allow said investigation. If I can't do it yet don't suggest the damn thing.
