Where a game gives a tutorial at the start to explain some mechanic, but then never uses that mechanic until 30 hours into the game.

The way all nintendo games make you click through 200 lines of pointless dialogue before they'll let you start actually playing.

I really hate pressing the analogue control sticks, for instance to run. Not every game allows you to re-map it either.

I don't tend to play those kinds of games on controllers, but when I've had to I've always found that really weird. Pressing the analogue sticks while using the same analogue sticks to move just seems really awkward.

Finished Kena this week which falls into that. My biggest issue is I find games often fail to read the click so you don't sprint. Especially if it's during combat.

also when there is typing or typewriter effect everytime a line of text plays on screen, that phoenix wright game collection is like torture. The devs are extra big wankers if they add high pitched retro noise for the typing effect

It wouldn't be so bad, if it didn't hurt my hand after doing it for the 200th time in a gaming session. Also on another controller related thing.. anything which uses the same button for picking up and talking can go in the bin.

I think I might’ve done this before but when clicking the thumbsticks does things like crouch so just as you’re trying to sprint or dodgeroll from some boss or epic hazard your character basically has a little sit down and gets mullered because you held forward too hard an inadvertently clicked it for crouch.

Yeah, exactly. Fortnite on switch does both of these, which is my excuse for why I suck at fortnite on the switch.

Press A for next line of speech. Always press B so you don't accidentally start talking to them again and have to repeat the conversation
The Nintendo games I've played recently have all been really quick to get you into the game. No splash screens when you load the game up either

Old PC games that had a million hot keys simply because you had that many keys on a keyboard. Same applies to console, but just because you have so many input choices, it doesn’t mean you have to use them all.
So many overly complicated controls in late 90s games.

On the other side, PC ports of console games binding ever more actions on the same 5 keys because keyboards apparently don't have more than that, and consequently the games get ever more cumbersome to control.

I haven't played one in ages, but I actually really like games that use a whole bunch of keys on the keyboard, especially when they gave me a nice cardboard overlay. It somehow makes the whole experience feel more 'sim-y' and real. It does of course necessitate a 96 page manual

I never engaged much with Sims and such, but the Freespaces did use a good amount of keys, many of which I probably never used. Being able to handle a good few things (like throttle and countermeasures) through the joystick also took care of some of those keys.

I remember using the Birth Of The Federation manual as a doorstop.

Collectibles that you then have to buy from the in game store after you discover them.

Today’s offering: when you’re 60-70% into a game that involves gradually levelling up both your skills and your equipment, and then your character gets captured in a cut scene and the game makes you play a section essentially naked..
Bonus points if this section also involves enforced stealth.
Ghost of Tsushima, I’m looking at you. I love you to bits, but you did both of these to me tonight and it was very tedious indeed. I’ll say one thing for you - the section was short, but it would have been so much better not to have it at all.

Similar to the being left with no gear angle.
In an rpg where the main party or its leader is incapacitated for plot reasons and you have to play using characters who haven’t been in your main party and it turns out there’s been little/no keeping autoleveling so now you have bad gear and you’re under levelled.
At least give us a fighting chance.
I think its probably more a JRPG thing. Final Fantasy games definitely hit you with both.

Fire Emblem Engage not letting you block stairs to prevent enemy reinforcements. This has always been the case and chapter 15 has some nasty reinforcements at the end to force you to advance to the exit quickly (at least at my level, they're death). So I leave a couple of units behind on the stairs and... they spawn anyway, right next to my units. Game over
No idea why they changed that unless it's something specific to Hard mode. It has really annoyed me

loot rankings from worst to best are as follows:
white green blue purple orange
this is the way. this has always been the way since time immemorial or since WoW or since whatever WoW nicked it from
games which monkey with this order - looking at you, Warhammer 40K Inquisitor, which heretically swaps green and blue and breaks my brain every time i attempt inventory management - should be purged in cleansing fires by order of the emperor

At least the reinforcements don't move on the same turn they come in, like they did in hard modes on some previous games. That mechanic can go straight to hell.

It's not something I use very often, to be honest. I'm determined to get these last few units to 20 though, so I wanted to take my time at the end. I need to get Anna from level 11 to something reasonable (against level 20/promoted units). Honestly, the last few hours have been such a pain (of my own making). I probably won't even use half of them after as I haven't got enough Master Seals anyway. But we're having fun
Yeah, that's a good one. Awakening and/or Fates does that. It results in some trial and error as you can't prepare for it until you know where the reinforcements will come from. I remember not liking Fates and only finished Birthright. Maid/Butler classes was just too silly. Making you buy 3 separate games was something as well. Seems like Three Houses was designed the same way but they decided against it for some reason. And that games is great

At least they sort of realised how stupid pulling a Pokemon was and whichever one you bought second was half price... And 3DS games were cheaper, so the Fates full version +DLC ended up costing about the same as Three Houses +DLC

I bought the special edition of Fates that came with all 3 campaigns. But yeah, that was a silly gimmick.
