Worst start in 9 years. Finished 3rd that season. We’ve played Newcastle away and Arsenal at home, and should have at least got points in both. I’m frustrated but not really worried at the moment. Related thought - I always wondered what was classed as a ‘start’ and where the cut off is. Clearly 4 games is but I swear sometimes they are still saying it after 10-15 games. Being an old fucker, I remember the papers not printing a league table until after 6, so that's always my benchmark.

I think when you’re in it a team’s start of the season is probably the first six games. When you’re doing the end of season round-up its anything from the first three games to Christmas depending on what narrative the second half of the season provides.

Lol at the limpet-like hold Maddison had on White during the goal. White runs to the near post and then gives Maddison the eyes after it goes in.

I think these early games hold much more significance now due to Man City absolutely steamrolling everything in their path.
The cunts.

I’m pretty concerned about the City game! Arsenal gave away some golden chances to Spurs in the first half and if they do that against City they’re fucked.

You've just got to ride the storm with City. With Rice being back, that will be somewhat easier. I think we still tried to play yesterday, despite having a depleted midfield. I can't see us making those same mistakes against City.

Two draws in difficult away matches to Spurs and City felt acceptable, especially in these circumstances. We're a point ahead of my own expectations.
I regularly have to remind myself that draws kill league campaigns. You are 50% better off after winning one and losing one than drawing two, even though it doesn't feel anything like as positive as being unbeaten.
Edit - in reply to Zissou. Statistically, we don't have to attack for the full 90 but we should be brave and take risks at some point. Death or glory.

As much as it is ours to lose, other teams have to step up against City. I think we had some fairly tough games last season, where they then played City, and fell to them 3-0 etc.

Yeah that aspect does really hurt us. City's status is such that even good teams like Villa treat it as a free hit and don't prioritise matches against them.
I think we're starting to get a bit of that status ourselves but we're far from equal in this regard. Far more teams in the league think they can get a result against us. It's entirely legit and understandable in this era with so many games and finite resources but still annoying.

I'm putting money on City getting a 108 point penalty this season. And still staying up.

City’s hearings start today. Let’s see if Pep will be true to his word about walking if all the off the books spending he claims not to have known about really did happen.

Completely behind closed doors. SSN said it would take about ten weeks for the initial hearings then potentially months for the outcome and both sides have the right to appeal.
Unlimited punishments though, so that’s something

Didn’t realise spurs form was so bad! 3 wins in 11 league games . If that ratio stays similar leading up to Xmas I can’t see Ange keeping his job

Would love to know how many players were booked.this weekend for "delaying the restart" vs those that should have been. Saliba was daft but numerous examples even in the Saints/Utd game.

IT was one of those usual PGMOL overcorrections this weekend. Suspect there will be far fewer next weekend.
Bruno and Maguire's ones were both altogether stupid. I think I'll be fine with it if it continues but invariably this type of thing doesn't

Gary Shaw died at 63, which will only register with old farts like me.
Terrific classy forward in a fantastic Aston Villa team at the time along with the likes of Tony Morley, Peter Withe.
Not even a Villa fan but he left me with good memories RIP

If that ratio stays similar leading up to Xmas I can’t see Ange keeping his job Spurs remind me a little of Wenger's last season at the moment. That side also had good players able to control plenty of possession and territory, but was crap at set pieces and easy to catch on the break. In hindsight Wenger was trying to play a system that was asking too much of the players available to him. It was like he couldn't get Kante so just expected Xhaka to do that job, and was continually surprised when Mustafi would shit the bed in pressure situations that better CBs that came before could cope with. So many soft goals conceded, many on the break, or from set pieces with. Results improved a bit thanks to signing Auba and him scoring a ton of goals, but never resolved the underlying frailties. No extra protection, just do the same thing and hope for the best. Ange should be given more time of course but if he's truly as stubborn as Arsene was about sticking to his attacking ideals he's doomed to failure. The Prem is so competitive now, every team has great players and a great manager and will ruthlessly exploit any weaknesses.

I don’t suppose any of our resident United fans want a free pair for the Barnsley game tomorrow?

When you hear someone has died from fall injuries you don't think of someone only being 63. Sad news.

I know the media wrote us off because we lost Kane . We were fortunate to have that 10 game start without a loss as we could have quite easily finished 8th if the form was similar . For me the difference yesterday was a complete lack of belief to actually score from us. Great football but just mentally fragile

I'll take a second tough year under Ange if the project comes good (much like the early Arteta years). I'm not daring to say we'll be as well oiled as Arsenal are now, but I do want us to maintain faith this season in the hope it'll work out (even though I had my own wobble about the team after the Newcastle game).
