So our town did the proclamation thing this afternoon. I'm pissed off with the whole thing now because the tory councillors had fenced off an area in front of the stage with chairs, whilst us prols had to stand further back. Fuxk the monarchy.

Inequality at a ceremony proclaiming a new hereditary monarch? Checks out.

I understand American news posting about it, even more so NY news, but other than being sad for the families who lost people it was an event that shouldn't have had much bearing on us, thus not something that particularly needs mentioned every year outside of the US. (Likewise, I don't expect them to be doing memorials to the queen next year...). 67 UK citizens died in the 9/11 attacks, plus it's probably the single event that has had the biggest indirect impact on all of our lives. Brexit, the Ukraine war, the 2008 GFC and the covid-19 pandemic say hello.

All it takes is one road accident and Harry is next in line. Fortunately they are known for their road safety.

Brexit, the Ukraine war, the 2008 GFC and the covid-19 pandemic say hello. Hello to them! Pretty sure 3 of those are direct impacts but that’s being fussy. Yet they are a lot more relevant than a terrorist attack on a far away continent 21 years ago. As I said initially, there was an impact on families involved and NY City but it really isn't something that should be as high profile as it is outside of the US. Yes, it was used as an excuse for us to join in other violent attacks and wars on other nations leading to more civilian deaths, but a lot of British people, even at the time, condemned how quickly we jumped into those wars. I wouldn't post abuse at people posting about it but it really isn't that relevant at this time in this place...

But as you said, it was a catalyst to a lot of unjust western intervention, more invasive traveling procedures, privacy concerns. It had a huge impact even if it doesn't feel it in your day to day life. Covid is certainly more tangibly impactful to everyone though.

It was closed because it's in the area that was set aside for flowers to be laid in tribute.

My boy has been telling my in that very straightforward instruction giving voice little kids can have that “the Queen has died but don’t worry because the King is going to look after you”
Which isn’t the worst cobbling together of events half watched on the news and filtered through his 3yo mind

I think Republicans should probably wait before proclaiming this their time. Is this not the perfect time? Nope. The popularity of the monarchy is now at its peak. Now is the worst time. For clarity I'm not a republican but I'm also not a monarchist. I'm the middle that doesn't really give a fuck as long as they don't negatively impact the lives of me and my family.

I know people love to moan about everything on here but complaining about an extra day off work has to be a new low. The 19th was already a bank holiday in Edinburgh, so I feel that technically I've been robbed of a bank holiday

I'm certainly an Aust republican but I think it is sensible. problem is if you get the other lot in power next term then it may be another decade or more.

For clarity I'm not a republican but I'm also not a monarchist. If the last few days have taught me anything, it’s that if you have to say ‘I’m not a monarchist but…’ then you’re a monarchist.
