Only real feeling I have is disbelief that we're going to have a multi million pound, weeks long, public service stretching procession while many normal people have to decide between food and fuel poverty over the winter. I just find the whole thing deeply insulting and completely separate from reality.

Fwiw, I can totally understand why it matters to Australia, Canada, etc.
You can't crown Kylie whilst you're still "ruled" by horrible Uncle Charlie.

Most Australians I've spoken to here seem very royalist, but of course that's probably partly why they were here in the first place. They would certainly lead me to believe it was generally popular in Australia though

I'm no economist, but the obvious counter argument is that many a country would pay billions without a second thought to draw as many eyes and attention to itself as the funeral and coronation certainly will. Just look at the spending to host the Olympics and things like that

"The Nation mourns with Gun Salutes"
Hmmm, does that mean we're allowed to fire widly into the air, then?
(I don't have a gun obviously, but lots of farmers around here do, might be an interesting time in the fields)

They would certainly lead me to believe it was generally popular in Australia though I think it's largely inertia, and general goodwill for the Queen. I don't think that is going to extend to Charles.

Regardless of my own feelings on her passing, I can't help but be appalled at some of the behaviour I've witnessed celebrating her death. Like this absolute pond scum of a woman just north of me, who ended up having to get a police escort away from the angry crowds that formed after she posted her cuntish video: I apologise that it's from the Mirror's site but the local ones didn't have the video as well: www.mirror.co.uk/news/royals/chip-shop-owner-who-sparked-27947252

I said in our whatsapp group that I think the royal family will have more trouble propping up a male monarch then a female one because everything he does will be a seen through the lens of patriarchy

are there only 4 photos of the queen? That one's on at least 3 covers of today's newspapers.

The only real reason Australia is not a republic already is the monarchists in government at the time of the last referendum hijacked the questions being asked at the polls and many people were somewhat confused by it all so went with the status quo. Had it been a simple yes/no ballot we would of voted to be a republic. After that even the republicans stated out of respect to the Queen we wont have another crack at it until the Queen dies.
It would be a great restart that the country needs, stop fucking about with stupid referenda to appoint an indigenous voice to government, have a proper independence day on a new fucking date, new flag, a proper constitution recognising the first nations people and maybe get around to enshrining a treaty. All wishful thinking but it would be the perfect opportunity to start fixing many wrongs properly.

Wills, on the other hand, seems like he will be happy* to be compliant and keep his mouth shut *blackmailed into

State of these loyal subjects though:
"However, thank you for paying Queen Lizzie's Taxes from your horrific chippy!
“I guarantee you this place will be boycotted and you will be claiming the King's Money on benefits, will you accept it or decline it?
Read as made up.

I said in our whatsapp group that I think the royal family will have more trouble propping up a male monarch then a female one because everything he does will be a seen through the lens of patriarchy There is also the cognitive effort needed to shift from just going "the Queen" to saying "the King" which might draw attention to how silly it is.
We've always lived with a Queen, so the term seems normal.
Using the word "King" to describe your ruler kind of reforms the concept anew, and will feel different and possibly uncomfortable.

And like you, regardless of my feelings on it, it will be a bit of strange period. I've spent my entire life, as I'm sure everyone else here has, growing up with pound notes, stamps, and the simple fact that she's always been part of something that everyone is familiar with. That's a weird kind of loss. Also, whatever you do, do not go onto facebook today (or any other day in fact), if you value your sanity.

Its been particularly hilarious to watch anti-woke, anti-cancel culture, free speech absolutists wet their knickers about people being mean about the queen. 'I dont normally say things like this but she should definitely be fired for this tweet'. gtfooh.

I don’t condone that either. Obviously. It’s times like these I’m reminded how vile people are in general. Yet it’s hardly surprising that celebrating the death of an old woman with champagne has prompted a response.

Agreed. I see her celebrating and think she is a bit of an idiot, particularly as she is associating her business with it. On the other hand, the people posting threats at her in response are the real vile scum. I'm sure the ones that article is sharing are the mild ones too. She will be receiving more direct death threats. Having said that, publicly jumping for joy over the death of an old lady is never a good look and is only going to make you look a bit pathetic, no matter what your views on the monarchy are.

Meh, people have plenty of reason to be glad she is dead. Lets not pretend that she didnt have a hand in or perpetuate the insitutions involved in terrible, global atrocities. Just be glad you dont have reason to dance on her grave.

I mean she's the head of state for the UK, perhaps the vilest of all the vile institutions. She presided over the Empire, which raped and pillaged from billions of people. Closer to home, she paid up to protect her paedo son, made and hoarded vast unearned wealth on the backs of working people, and fought to exclude her estate from the Equalities Act 2010.
