Obviously Charles is going to get the same level of outpouring of grief when he carks it, right? Right? This might be controversial, but... how about you just don't have a queen. Or a king. Or a royal family at all. That would mean having a Johnson, Trump or Bolsonaro as our national figurehead.

The British blue/black passport might actually have some value now as they're the last ones issued in her name. Expecting to see them pop up on eBay when they expire.

I'm not a royalist at all and have no love for the royal family, but I've also had no ill-will towards the Queen, so this morning when my five year old daughter said she didn't want a King made me realise she's now going to grow up likely never seeing a Queen on the throne again. I know that's not a ground-breaking thing, we'll all get over it, but it obviously struck a chord with my daughter (her school did a lot of jubilee celebrations which is why she knows so much about her).

Be all sorts of things now seeing inflated values; my old coleagues at Mattel sent me listings on eBay this morning for the limited edition Queen doll they did which are now bidding in the thousands.

Part of the reason the Tories have been in power is that the voting system and demographics make it so.
The majority of people did not vote for the Tories. Even in England (usually viewed as their support base) on its own, they did not get the majority of the popular vote.
If we had a president voted by a STV system (or even a multi-round system like what France has), I think we'd more likely get a centre-left candidate winning.

Then they should be chosen at birth, like the Dalai Lama, we could then spend 20 years educating them so that they don't become a national embarrassment.

If the football was on, people would only complain that the tributes/silence/knee taking wasn’t as good for Liz as it was for BLM I've already seen comments to that effect where they said "NOW is the time for players to KNEEL"

Like wtf! Living in palaces, going to parties and events, etc.

I wonder if I’d like being the King. You get to be rich and travel the world surrounded by servants but when do you get to binge Netflix for 8 hours a day or get a dirty takeaway?
I wonder if they get a special supply of prostitutes or if they just murder each one afterwards to keep them quiet.

I'm firmly in the 'republican, but don't care either way' camp, myself.
My gripe is with the monarchy as a whole, not the Queen in particular - she was just a product of a system (or a symptom of a disease, if you prefer) that I dislike strongly.
I don't see her death as a positive thing, because a) I didn't think she was all that bad, specifically, and b) it doesn't take us any closer to jettisoning the Royal Family altogether; at the same time, I don't see her death as a negative thing either, because she was just another public figure towards whom I held nothing more than apathy.
Hell, looking at the other celebrities who've died thus far in 2022, I was *much* more saddened by the passing of Ray Liotta, Taylor Hawkins, Gabe Serbian, Gilbert Gottfried, Estelle Harris, Mark Lanegan, and Bob Saget. Their lives and work meant something to me, to varying extents, which I can't say about a single member of the Royal Family.
If this event genuinely saddens you, for whatever reason, by all means grieve away - I don't understand it, but I won't go out of my way to be a contrarian dick about it, either.
If you're going to use it as some sort of bullshit 'more patriotic than thou' purity test, shedding crocodile tears and waving your Union Jack flag while judging the hell out of of anyone who feels differently, you can fuck right off.

It's also not like the history of the British Royal family is spotless. No but prime minister Truss and president Johnson definitely is. I like having an apolitical head of state, having two governing bodies of different parties seems like nothing would get done and having two of the same seems pointless.

One commentator yesterday: the thing about the queen was she really enjoyed being the queen. Like wtf! Living in palaces, going to parties and events, etc. Yeah I had to laugh at that. It must be really hard working out which palace you want to spend your time in. Imagine the horror of having to pick and the stress that if you don't like being there, you'd have to get an awful private jet back to another one of your estates.

Its funny that we are now on the 'stats' part of filling dead space, pulling out benchmarks she set purely by virtue of the invention of the jet engine, the internet and modern medicine.
'She has travelled the furthest of any other british monarach'. Yeah, she has a private jet. Queen Victoria was dragged everywhere behind a horse.

The News Quiz is still in the schedules for Radio 4 tonight. HIGNFY hasn't managed to make the jump to BBC Two though (Like EastEnders, and other stuff cleared from the BBC One schedule)

I dunno, obviously this is not as central to my life as it is for most of the people here. But personally I would prefer it if my Head of State actually lived in my state, and had some interaction with it aside from being on the back of our coins, the odd rushed visit, and the odd "your representative deciding to fire our Prime Minister" incident.
So while I didn't have a specific problem with the Queen, I am emphatically a republican, and hope that Charles getting in will put that back on the table for us. It's just a bit silly at this point.
