Finished it, after dropping out of the highly regarded graphic novel years ago. On the whole, I thought it was fantastic and did a great job of bringing it to the screen. I thought the ‘beats her wings’ episode was sublime, but the vortex story took a while to get going for me, although the conclusion was excellent. The bonus episode was very, very strong too.
They’ve obviously chucked a lot of money at this. I hope they keep the faith, film what can be filmed, keep the quality but move on when the time is right.

Considering the obviously investment and that its not such an immediate show I’m slightly surprised its a Netflix show.
Or is it a buy-in they’ve branded as Netflix not one of their actual in-house productions?

When that bonus 11th episode dropped, I thought it was going to be all animated cats, but then the live action bit started and even though it was good I sort of wished there were cats in it.

My other half told me Calliope in that episode is Kassandra in Assassin's Creed Odyssey Incidentally, what's the significance of the "Candle" book in that episode? It gets repeated call backs & I think I missed something. Also the, err, fur ball? Mentioned at the beginning it's thought to prevent poisoning, then when it's later revealed he killed himself by poisoning?

Or is it a buy-in they’ve branded as Netflix not one of their actual in-house productions? It’s Netflix funded and made. Gaiman has been saying even though it’s been number one most watched for two weeks that still might not be enough for Netflix to make season 2.

I’m still being dragged through it. It’s plodding and meandering but it’s getting better. Shadow and Lucifer’s duel was ridiculous. Why not just say I’m the antiques roadshow. Every Sunday. For the rest of time. Outliving the universe. Fiona Bruce. Phwoar. I am a TV licence fee. Unpaid. Revoked.

Just finished episode 6, which I actually really enjoyed. Finding I enjoy it much more when the episodes are standalone rather than part of the overarching narrative. Also this one was shot nearby so spent a fair bit of the episode spotting local landmarks.
At one point I thought Death was going to visit Ted Lasso...

I’m one behind you in the diner but agree its starting to stretch its legs with the more self-contained stories.
To be fair, that was true of the comics too. They both open with the slowest and smallest story and take awhile to finally break out into something more creative. I actually think the world building is better illustrated in the standalone stories (in the comics) than those which are explicitly telling you how things are. I assume the tv show will continue to follow the same pattern.
It’ll be interesting to see on the cusp of which great story Netflix will leave us when they cancel it at the end of next season.

I finished this the other day, including the extra 2-parter. Unfortunately I can't remember anything from my readings of the graphic novels but enjoyed it nonetheless. I just would have liked to be able to compare it more as it went along.
I did find it a little dull in places and also liked the more stand-alone episodes that focus on particular themes. I particularly liked the death episode, the diner one and the final extra one/two. I think these felt like they had a more emotional core where the story arc episodes feel colder and somewhat distant. That's probably the point though, Dream's distance from things. He reminds me of Dr Manhattan.

It basically had everything from Act 1 of the graphic novels aside from the Shakespeare story and Element Girl, with some minor changes to the Lucifer and Constantine plots.
And removed a lot of the DC references, I guess because of rights or something.

Even if it wasn’t a rights thing, which it most likely is, it would be weird having superheroes involved on top of everything else. They always seemed a bit out of place even in the comics too, Sandman was very much its own thing to me.

Iirc they're not very much involved, just a few Easter eggs in the John Dee storyline. I think Martian Manhunter turns up for a scene?

I know nothing of the comics, so I'm guessing Constantine is the same guy Keanu Reeves played in that not especially good film?

Yes, and Lucifer is the same one who has their own tv show too I think

It was a good episode, but it felt a bit weird being combined with Hob Gadling. I guess the themes are kind of similar, but imo not really similar enough to be in the same episode.

Not TV related, but Act 3 of The Sandman audio drama just surprise dropped on Audible.
Fair warning though, it has Will Wheaton now.

I guess they felt that the two stories weren't long enough to be an episode individually, but I don't know why they didn't just do it like they did with episode 11. Also, I was confused by the sudden appearance of Constantine. I don't remember that from the comic, but maybe he turns up there as well. Just felt a bit random and wasn't particularly explained. I really loved this overall though. Had the perfect tone and I never especially felt that it was plodding. I was watching it at the same time as Rings of Power and House of the Dragon started and I found it easily my favourite of the three fantasy shows, albeit very different from those. It also encouraged me to get back into the comics, so I have volume 6 and 7 on their way.

That is really great news. Thoroughly enjoyed the first season and it encouraged me to get back into the comics (volume 7 sitting in my bag ready to be pulled out in a moment).
I can imagine it is going to be quite a wait for the next one if production hasn't started.

If someone was interested in reading the comics at this late moment, which edition would you suggest? The 30th anniversary edition which is around 11-12 volumes or the recent deluxe one? The later of course is hardcover while the former is paperback...

I'm getting the 30th anniversary ones (although they weren't 30th anniversary when I picked up volumes 1-5 a few years ago, I expect those are the same as the 6 and 7 I recently bought, besides different covers and the 30th anniversary tag).
No idea if you get more out of the deluxe ones besides being hardback.

There's also a 4-book paperback set of books I saw in Waterstones the other day. They seem to be the whole lot spread over 4 thicker vols, just called I-IV (on the spines). They were £28 each (prob cheaper elsewhere) and you have to put up with a Netflix logo on the covers.

BeetrootBertie I think the ones you describe are the paperback editions of the deluxe ones I mentioned, but I could be wrong... Thanks for the replies

How did people get on with the spin-off books?
I’ve got the Japanese fox one but otherwise only own the main series at the moment

Spin off books? Are there a bunch of them? I didn't know there were any beyond the couple of Death stories and the Lucifer series (which is also decent).
I think I may have read the sandman book they did after the ending which was a bit meh.
DC have fairly been milking the popularity of the OG series then have they?
