The first episode is basically an hour of (cinematic standard) exposition.

I’m not really seeing how its ‘an hour’ of exposition. It’s part of the story.

I watched four episodes and thought it’s superb. Minor irritation with the companion accent and it’s shonky CGI animations but on the whole, it looks beautiful, it’s got heart and the cast are wonderful. They better not cancel it after one season

Sounds like it's ok then? Glad to hear it.
Hopefully they do keep it going. Too many Netflix shows seem to get binned just as they're getting going/finding an audience.

Watched 3, not blown away, but it is growing on me. Not a big comic book fan admittedly.

Loved, the first 2. They have messed with the order of things a bit and added some stuff to make it a bit more tv friendly but pretty good so far

Gaiman did the adaptation didn’t he?
I’ve not started watching yet but any changes should at least be in the spirit of the book

Just finished the sixth episode, which I thought would be my decision point. It was. And it passed. Being of a certain age, the portrayal of Death was always going to be a major factor. Folding The Sound of her Wings into the series was neatly done.
Casting something like this is always going to be hard work, balancing the expectations of fans against who could actually pull it off. So far I’ve no real problems with any of them. I wish we had more time with Cain, Abel and Merv, but i suppose there’s a lot to fit in and I’d rather they get a chance to tell the whole story.

I think they’ve done as good a job as could be done. Too much more of the spirit of the comic would be hard to translate well.

I've watched the first episode and it is indeed an hour of exposition. It's so odd that when Gaiman does telly the exposition is quite hard and in your face, like he's trying very hard to show you what he was doing. The comics do not have this problem (nor did American Gods), it's really odd. Sometimes I think as an old man he just doesn't understand the charms of his own earlier work.

Admitedly, it is quite slow going, but does pick up by the third. Having finished it just now, my only real complaint is that the actor playing Unity Kincaid really was’t very good.

Up to 24/7 which I thought was really well done, best episode yet and benefitted from being given a whole hour to just unravel. I agree that so far, I think this is as good an adaptation as you could hope for given the fact I can't think of many works which would be harder to adapt. The casting is really good. Shame it's Netflix so will be cancelled before we meet Orpheus and get that incredible storyline.

Watched the first episode last night, not bad. Dream looks a bit too young/polished but his voice and narration were pretty good.
Really wanted Alex Burgess to receive the gift of eternal waking (instead of sleep); not only would it have been great visually (and show some of the horror that's prevalent in the comics) but I'm worried little changes like this will effect Dream's arc of being quite unsympathetic/cruel at the start compared to what he becomes later on.
Hope there's a little mystery left too - it practically told you everything up front in a two minute voiceover.
Sounds like I'm complaining a lot but I still thought it was decent and I'm only one episode in.

Yeah this is what I meant by it being quite expositiony, I did enjoy it but they should leave some mystery to it.

Just watched Ep5 24/7 and then Ep6
That’s about as good as it gets for me. Beautiful, dreadful, superb.

Is it a purposeful stylistic choice that makes everything look annoyingly stretched or is my tv broken?

Third episode in for me and I enjoy it; have no prior knowledge of the source material though, so my opinion may be worthless...

I’ve read the first 7 collected issues fairly recently and it is a good representation of the comics.
I would recommend the audiobooks which are more like radio plays to anyone. Again they don’t deviate from the source significantly, they’re just really good.

The graphics novels toy with that sort of stuff so 🤷♂️

Dream is quite a stretched out tall boy in the comics so makes sense if the tv show plays with that sort of thing too

First episode I was a bit meh. The second and third I was right on-board.
I love some of the sets and designs and the CGI is decent. I haven't read the comics but the casting and characters of the Sandman, library lady and especially the Corinthian all worked.
It's pretty in your face with the LOOK IT'S LESBIANS, BLACK PEOPLE, DRAG QUEENS! And I am SO over fucking Patton Oswald being the whacky voice of stuff.
Anyway I enjoyed it up until the Vortex became a thing. It all feels a bit Dr Who now.
Episodes 1 - 6 8/10 but episode 7 onwards zzzzzzzzzz.

6th episode was the best so far, watched 7 so far. Overall it is a bit up it's own arse TBH. Not really my thing, but it would be rude not to finish it now.

I think it’s that weird focus thing some shows do. There’s like a horizontal oval in the middle of the screen that’s in focus and then a vignette around the edge that is completely out of focus. They do the same things in a few Netflix shows like Sabrina and I have no idea why as it looks really shit. Next time you watch an episode, look at the bottom of the screen. Peoples bodies look fine and their feet always look like they are phasing out of reality.

Loved the Death episode.
It felt a bit smooshed in together with the Hob Gadling storyline, though. I loved that story in the comics, but I think it needed its own space in the adaptation.
Still good though!
