Hi all, been trying to search for the answer to this but to no avail.
I'm having an issue with my home network. I have an old switching hub connected to my router, which then connects 3 other devices around the house.
When I set things up, I get good speeds and connection to each device. But when I shut everything down, all the connected devices lose their connection to the Internet. When I run a test, it fails to optain IP and can't connect.
Now here is the kicker, all I have to do is switch the ports the switching hub is connected to on the back of the router, and everything works again.
I have a feeling its something like an IP conflict, because I'm letting the devices automatically assign their IPs, but I'm not the most network savvy.
Any ideas what might be happening?

There's pretty much no risk of an IP address conflict if everything is set to get addresses automatically, and it would only really cause issues for two devices anyway, not all of them.
Just how old is this thing? Could be worth replacing it with a dumb gigabit switch if it really is a hub.

But when I shut everything down, what does this mean?

Turn off the devices and turn them back on again.
It is quite an old hub yeah.

Even if everything worked, hubs top out at like 10mb so none of the machines attached to it are getting anywhere the broadband speeds you are presumably paying for.
You might even be flooding it when you turn stuff back on, which is why it’s crapping itself.

Yeah, get a modern switch. Hubs being passive and not really modern home network friendly means some cheap consumer routers freak the fuck out over them.

Cool, I'll try that. I suppose something like this will be OK? www.argos.co.uk/product/8495459In regards to speed, I get crappy connection that tops out, at around 60mbps, which is <10mb/s (still no fibre here) I'm getting high 50s on the connection page so I'm not overly concerned with my speeds or what I'm paying for. I'd just like a stable connection to work every time I turn it on. Thanks for all the advice, really appreciate it.

Yeah, that should be all you need, just swap it with the in and you’re done.

Recently switched my ISP to Vodafone after BT increased their prices a bit too much. Speeds are improved but the Vodafone router seems pretty poor - can barely get signal in the next room.
Would I be better buying my own router or getting some kind of mesh?

Mesh.
Mesh mesh mesh.
Mesh.

More prosaically, unless you live on a bedsit, amesh network is going to perform better than any one single point of signal access.
Also it future proofs you. If you change isp or need a new router in the future, you won't be a hostage to fortune on how good the WiFi is on that. You're got your mesh network with is awesome.

Mesh. Mesh mesh mesh. Mesh. Thanks man, makes sense. Any recommendations or essential requirements?

So last night I upgraded from my Sky Hub and Archer A7 router to the TP-Link X55 AX3000 mesh system. It is f***ing lovely. Best £200 I've convinced my boss to spend in a long time.

Nope (although yes), I do mean my actual boss. A grumble about my network quality here and a nudge there and hey presto, new home network. Now I'm getting the as advertised ~65mb both wired and wirelessly. I even got a notification on my laptop from windows 11 telling me I'm a flash bastard with wifi-6.

I really need to pull my finger out and sort out my cabling. Pretty much wasting a 900Mb connection 90% of the time over WiFi and homeplugs and regretting not going for the cheaper 500Mb one instead.
Ordered a spool of cat6 and some faceplates and I'm sure I'll get around to it one day...

I did my downstairs when we did some renovations earlier in the year. Wired connections everywhere. I downloaded the 90 odd gigs of Horizon Forbidden west in 15 - 20 minutes. I don't know for sure as I watched TV for about 20 minutes and turned back over to the Playstation to check the status. I assumed the download had borked out for a couple of seconds.
Ridiculously unnecessary speed. Glorious nonetheless.

Yeah, I need to do something about the wiring. Our cab was recently upgraded so I can get 1gb now but the mesh tops out at 500, so the only thing that would make use of it is my work laptop and the wifes edit bay. Wouldnt mind being wired before SF6 drops, too.

Any tips or snags Rob? I’m really tempted, but we have Now TV broadband (which apparently doesn’t play well with Mesh) and we also have a central heating system controlled by Hive, and I’m wary of conflicts and being cold

Nope, it all went very smoothly, switched off the wifi in the hub, swapped out the a7 for a Deco, turned everything back on and followed the instructions in the app. When we had Sky Q installed a few months back, the engineer would only connect the box to the sky hub claiming it wouldn't play nicely with anything else, but it's been perfectly fine connected to the Deco. The only tip I have which might save you 5 minutes of headscratching is to remember to disconnect your phone from any VPN it might be attached to. The Deco app is pretty decent and for the first time ever I have been through and identified every device and plug connected to the network which is nice. We have a hive that came with our boiler, but as the boiler is only for hot water and not heating it hasn't been plugged in for a couple of years. I might fire it up later and see if it connects ok.

Plugged the hive network cable into the deco, put some batteries in the thermostat and it all connected straightaway.

Why the fuck is Windows so shit with WiFi? Constantly getting disconnections. Have tried assigning a static IP, which worked for a while but is now crapping out again. Anything else I can try? USB dongle btw, not a card as only have a small form factor PC.

on the assumption your phone is on same wifi, just worth double checking your phone retains the connection when the PC craps out, you know to check whether prob is at router or 'puter end
edit: if confirmed at 'puter end, possible to beg/borrow/steal a usb dongle from someplace else, preferably different manufacturer as some of them will have shit drivers

It does - have replaced the dongle in the past (from a cheapo one without an aerial to one with). That did make a difference for quite a long time but it's now started crapping out again. Which makes me think it's a Windows thing.

Can you test the dongle in another device? USB ones are notoriously shit, I'm afraid, so it might be kaput.
If it's working, you probably want to check it's installed properly in device manager
Open Device Manager (Windows + X > Device Manager)
See if it's still there under Network Devices when it's plugged in, if it's not look for any unknown devices and if you find one, see if it's a network device. Might have lost drivers, maybe.

Ta. It was fine for nearly an hour and has gone again. Device is present no worries, and up to date drivers. Will give the router another kick.

USB Wi-Fi dongles are almost universally terrible. I’ve never managed to get one to work reliably on windows.

Fair, had hoped spending more than a tenner would help, but apparently not. Not going to lose too much sleep though, only use it infrequently for background sports watching.

Dongle on 2.4 or 5ghz? Worth checking for interference and changing channel or the WiFi band.
My constant WiFi issues were solved when I put my shitty ISP provided router into modem mode and bought dedicated Wifi gear. Can't go wrong with Unifi AP's.
